You should do an active pickup myth-busting video. Take a guitar or two that has active pickups (mainly the infamous EMGs) and play the guitars through all different kinds of amps and really see how the tone does or does not change with the amps. The main haters of EMGs always claim that they sound the same regardless of the amp and that they suck the individuality out of the tones you can get. I would love to see a type of video like this cause it seems like a really cool idea and it's an interesting topic! Cheers! :D EDIT: Just to clarify further, the amp choices could be based on price. So example, you could start with a small $300 combo amp and work your way up to a Silverback, let's say.
@BrandonNevermind
@BrandonNevermind 9 жыл бұрын
They are basically normal passive pickups run through a small buffer circuit, the same as running a guitar with passive pickups through a pedal that has buffered bypass, or through a buffer pedal. It won't really matter all too much electrically unless you are running through fuzz or other impedance-based pedals.

..or the same guitar with a different neck! like Capt's Squier maple neck swap with a rosewood as suggested below.
@florianbaiker5519
@florianbaiker5519 9 жыл бұрын
Actually it doesn´t sound the same regardless of the amp. It´s more the guitar. You can put an active pickup in any decent guitar and it will sound the same.

I used to have the EMG 81/85 Combo in my Ibanez RGA42. Switched to Dimarzio Titans and don´t regret that step. The Dimarzio have way more output in my opinion, but don´t crack up my clean signal. I think it´s a feel thing. Passives are more responsive IMO. Way more interaction with what actually comes out of my hand. I´m not a active hater. But honestly I would never go again with the 85/81, wouldn´t mind the 57/66, though.
@Iron883Man
@Iron883Man 9 жыл бұрын
In my experience they aren't any different from passive pickups sound/tonewise. They are just made to be loud and you loose alot of the interaction that way. It's like playing forte all the time and not beeing able to play 'piano' anymore. Not a problem if you play rock or metal, but kind of a problem when you're playing Jazz or Classical.

Big dynamic sound with a big price tag but the availability to tweak and find a tone which best suits you as a player can't be overlooked. Mesa Boogie's always seem a little daunting and intimidating for me as a player but I can certainly see in the right hands how fantastic this amp would be. Great review lads.

The British Accents are sounding very authentic now as well- almost "Bloody Real". There was one Scene where Rob Chappers not only changed his playing Style but his hair style and even his face ! . Very Impressive Chameleon-like ability to change Playing Styles.

Just wanted to do my part because he mentions its not really an amp to take back to your flat. This and the 35w can easily do low volume bedroom playing and sound good doing it. I love these reviews and nearly didn't buy it because of this one line in the video, and a similar comment in another demo. Also on the flip side this thing will shake your pant legs before the volume hits 12:00. Very few drummers will drown that out.

Something not mentioned (I think): having a fiddle with my brand new one, the EQ knobs appear to be pre-gain and the sliders are post-gain. Which is pretty cool, as it allows you more tone-shaping possibilities than you normally get. I.e. if you whack up the bass knob with a lot of gain it won't actually increase the bass level, it'll make the timbre woofier, and so on.

It's interesting that this little thing makes huge clean sounds, huge marshally sounds, huge high gain sounds. It's got an EQ, two separate sets of controls and various power output level choices. If it was marketed as a 35 watt full size head, nobody would have an issue. I have one of these. Used for $1100. It is an outright dandy, and with reading of the manual, relatively easy to use. and enormous sounding. Other options are things like vintage amps that have no master volume, are noisy, and don't really sound that good at anything less than WFO. I haven't found an amp for less than this that sounds as good. And, I'm cheap - it's my most expensive amp by a mile. It's good.

That's curious that you say it's not a "play it in your flat (apartment)" type of amp; I basically consider every amp against my ENGL Screamer 50watt combo that can get crazy loud, but still sounds GREAT at just .5 volume (master 1/10, channel 5/10). It makes me SO happy seein how much Lee is in love with his tricked out Squire. Money and brand names don't make music, having a relationship with your instrument and your gear is what it's all about.

I love this little amp. I'm strongly becoming a Boogie fan. I've resisted them for many years but I think I might have to have a go with them. By the way I much prefer when Rob actually plays then just noodles around. You get a much better presentation of what the amp actually sounds like and responds. Even better when he plays Dorje Stuff.
