I saw Meshell and band in Chicago in 97 - one of the best shows I've ever seen. 25 years later and I still think about it. Sooo funky. What an amazing group of talents. Just now found this video and it put a big smile on my heart.

That must be it, she didn't have that packaged "marketing" image. I think her sexual orientation might have something to do with it, considering this was nearly 30 years ago. For me she's the complete musician, writer, singer, instrumentalist, arranged by a passionate perfectionist.

Damn her band is on point! I miss her funky and smooth stuff of old. Been a fan of hers since Plantation Lullabies but her music had jumped into more obscure (not in top 40 radio rotation) but still respectable music.

perk299 I think she just became frustrated with the color lines in the music industry and, honestly, within her audience... on both sides of the aisle. Expectations from Maverick, from AAA radio, from urban radio - it seems to have zapped some energy from her. Or maybe she just ran out of fux, which can also be a good thing. I have loved all but one of her records (still struggle with “Weather,” which I got to see her support 3x because I always go when it’s feasible), but watching the 90’s performances, it’s sooo different. The ‘Cookie’ tour was fire. Without a big label behind her, bands like this are just too expensive. The new single has an almost spiritual jazz feel to it and M doesn’t sing the lead vocal. Definitely an intriguing new direction.

I saw this band at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA and the guitar player added his own verse to “Outside Your Door” that is NO WHERE on KZbin or in any official live recording. Funny. 25 years later all the musical equipment used is still up to date. Except maybe the drum miking and the monitoring. (No IEM yet). No Betas. 😄 The guitar sounds are maybe kind of off at times. But that could also happen today with a non caring guitarist. All said, this group was way ahead of their time back in 1997.
