The A-10 Thunderbolt 2 (AKA the "Warthog") is only a 30mm, but it's a gatling style gun. We never really "Skipped" the 105s in production of cannon armed aircraft. The AC-130 carries those... If you really want to look at it a bit different, you could say that Japanese dive bombers responsible for the end of USS Arizona were armed with cannon ammo. The "bombs" were 14inch battleship shells in a casing that allowed them to be carried by the bombers.

Couple of things: Having the drum Magazine at the center of gravity is incredibly important in a plane like this. Very well done! Ammo is make up a significant amount of weight, so having the drum at center of gravity is the only way to give the pilot any chance of hitting consecutive shots, since there are no fly by wire aim assist shenanigans going given the level of tech. Also, given enough fuel capacity or even mid air refueling (aerial refueling was invented and used even before WW2) this this could be a potent ASW / convoy raid aircraft. Stick a radar on it, give it another seat for a navigator, done... Though the crews will probably hate it given the lack of accomodations for missions that last so long.

That is one sexy aircraft! I was totally thinking 'Moonbat' as you were building it and I'm glad to see it wasn't lost on you, either. As for the concept of aircraft attacking and sinking ships using a large calibre gun... I seem to remember hearing or reading somewhere about a B-25 (either a G or a H, I can't remember which) sinking a Japanese destroyer with 5 rounds of 75mm. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but I'm sure I heard it somewhere. Oh, and the thing with the Sheriden's recoil - I think the thing was that the gunner had to quickly move his hand away from the breach when the gun was fired, or otherwise run the risk of a broken wrist.

Funfact: In WW2 they actually mounted 75mm howitzers to naval raiding aircraft like B-25s and B-24s. However, the squadrons operating these planes noticed that for commerce raiding, what they needed was *suppressing fire*. The attack method for these planes was usually a technique called "skip bombing", where you drop a bomb so that it skips across the surface of the water like a rock. In order to do this, you have to fly parallel to the water's surface for a pretty substantial distance, meanwhile every gun on the ship your targeting is firing at you. The 75 was decent enough but most crews could only fire it 3-4 times on an attack run, so a couple of squadrons replaced these cannons with a whole bunch of .50 caliber machine guns.

I really like that plane. It's elegant, even though its a bit bloated with the ammunition drum. I think what it could be used for is for hunting U-Boats. As this is around 1945ish, submarines are going to be diesel-electric types that spend most of their time on the surface, only submerging when they need to for avoiding detection. What RAF Coastal Command had to hunt U-Boats during WWII was De Havilland Mosquitoes with a 57mm 6pdr gun. They would find the U-Boat, fire an AP shell through the hull so they can't submerge, and then another aircraft could finish it off with rockets. A 6 inch CPCBC shell with a decent HE filler could probably sink a U-Boat in one hit.

Under the terms of the various naval treaties, Destroyers were limited to 5.1 inch (129ish mm) guns, 152mm guns are equal to 6 inch guns, which were pretty standard on light cruisers (6.1 inches or 155ish mm was the limit). This would generally be considered a cruiser main battery gun. Some navies did use these as secondaries on larger ships, but they fell out of favor in that role as they could not be reloaded fast enough to be used as Dual Purpose AA/AS guns. As a general rule, ships should be protected against their own guns, and most cruisers in the post war error were armored against at least 6 inch shells, either plunging fire or hitting the belt. The biggest issue with a gun like this on an aircraft is the angle at which it will hit the ship it's targeting. It needs to fly low and aim right above the waterline, as level as possible, or dive directly down on the ship, making the shell essentially a really fast bomb, which may help or hinder it's penetration depending on armor quality and shell design.

Which is why those types of planes if ever used were mostly Tank Hunters (i am only adding, and i agree with your comment)

Just a thought. •Lengthen the nose •Lengthen the cockpit •Twin 30mm installed for pilot to strafe. •Single 152mm installed (rear facing) Gunner in rear of cockpit fires as pilot climbs out of the run. 🤷‍♂️

There are plenty of ground/surface vessel attack craft with "Tank" Cannons in them... what you are talking about is an Artillery Piece... while they are used on Tank Chasis, they tend not to be tanks but Self Propelled Artillery or Tank Destroyers (which is a weird designation to me because its still just Self Propelled Artillery)...

Other than a handful of German destroyers that mounted 150mm guns, and were considered failures because of those weapons, no destoyers mounted bigger than 140mms and those were rare at that. The vast majority of destroyers in WWII and after mounted 130mm and lower. Post war the biggest caliber seen was 130mm on Soviet destroyers. 152 is a 6inch gun which is light cruiser specific and reserved for those and up.

Love it! One more great creation. And I do like those real world planes where they just build a plane around a big gun. The A-10 is of course the most well know... But boy, there where some big gunned WWII aircraft too. Not 152mm howitzer size, what I know off. But proper tank calibre guns. With the lagers being over 100 mm I believe. Even the modern AC-130 gunship has variants with 105 mm howitzer. May all be retired now however.

Steambirds Esque I gave myself an idea with that, you guys in the fly out community should build planes from steambirds as closely as possible.😮 Or model planes from any form of media that aren’t already real aircraft. 😸

Huge fan! just a suggestion of making a tanker/refueler. As an airmen of the 101st Maine Air Guard I feel like air refueling is woefully underrepresented. Fuck it, since we'll be using 50s tech until the next century make it hyper advanced!

You should do a follow-up on this with a more modern plane. Using 2 of the f35 vtol engines, a stealthy 155mm cannon straight in the middle, and two 50mm behind. Ramjet shells would be dope too.
