Meta Puts Major Pressure On Google's VR Aspirations With Horizon OS

I think Google will hold off on sending the Playstore to Meta until they debut their own hardware with Samsung, and use the Playstore as one of if the differences between the headsets. And then in a couple years if Google isnt making the Hardware progress they want, they will send the playstore to Meta as a whiteflag.

I have a quest 3 and love the direction they are going. By transferring the app lab games to the new horizon OS store is great. Much easier access to many games people dont even know about. I was curious about something. App Lab has some game demos that are very promising but it feels like the developers have quit some of the projects. There are games that were accessible years ago and have never been finished or updated. Do you think having the app lab games come to the main meta store that more developers will put out or finish current projects they were working on? Also, I'd love to see google playstore on meta OS but it seems Meta and Google have a strange relationship so im not sure that will happen anytime soon. Great content. Very informative. Why would they though? Wouldn't building it themselves be the obviously better move for them given Google's track record with VR? Not to mention the level of control they have doing it themselves.

Shane I had a Samsung flip and over time it scratched up along the crease of the screen. It was one of the reasons why I got a Microsoft surface duo 2, the middle of the screen is just two screens and it's never going to have the scratching problem. So I was thinking that in the future I will probably switch to a pixel fold, but I read into it and some people are reporting that the p fold is also having the crease scratching problem, and so does the galaxy fold line. So what's going on with the screen crease scratching is it something that the engineers can't fix? Thanks, avid duo 2 user.

People go with brand names so Google and Samsung if priced reasonably will beat out Meta.

Meta already owns the majority of the headset market and has actively gotten a software ecosystem going. Google is not going to win unless they fully commit to this and the reality is that they simply won't - Google abandons products at the first sign of inconvenience and consumers know that.

Meta is generous to permit the Play Store on Horizon OS, whereas Apple has refused to do so, despite the EU's laws mandating it. However, Meta can bypass the Play Store's 30% fee on Horizon OS, as developers can easily distribute their apps through the Horizon Store. Moreover, developers don't need to make significant changes to their code, since Horizon OS is built upon Android.

@@Jdb63 Who said it's generous? I said Meta should build its own Horizon Store and block other stores, just like Apple does. The Horizon Store will be a great income generator, with a 30% fee in the future. It's easy for developers to port their apps to the Horizon store.

I hope horizon os is more like Windows with a command line and capable of running scripts and viewing program files unlike android

It's just a modified Android. Nothing new, they're just opening up the OS we've been running on Quest headsets for others to use.

@scaryifliteral zuckerberg did mention that you can install mods, so even though it's modified android. I'm betting that they want it to be more like windows. Even the verge mentioned that they want to be more like microsoft/windows. So fingers 🤞 because they've been talking about replacing your laptop with a headset, and if so, it's gonna have to have the same functionality as Microsoft's windows.
