Helmet broke big before this song on The Crow soundtrack in 1994. Their album Meantime in 1992 had their breakout hits Unsung and In The Meantime. They also put out a slightly different version of Milquetoast on their follow up album Betty in 1994. The song is actually titled Milktoast on The Crow soundtrack and Milquetoast on Betty. The definition of milquetoast is "a timid or feeble person". There were a lot of great soundtrack albums around that time (Pulp Fiction and Judgement Night also come to mind). The next track on The Crow soundtrack right after this one is a song called The Badge by Pantera (a cover). Worth checking out.

Yeah, most would've at least heard of Helmet before The Crow. If anything, I forgot they were ever on the soundtrack of The Crow.

Just checked my library. I don't see a spelling variation on that. ?? Anyway, I agree big time with those others posting about Last Action Hero, The Crow, and my god, the Judgement Night soundtrack. That shit is fire.

Helmet are probably the most underrated band of the 1990's. John Stanier and Paige Hamilton are top tier. Their groove is just amazing.

Helmet have been in my top 5 favorite bands since I first heard them in 1992/93. I just love how they play heavy riffs but with awesome groove.

Helmet was my favorite band back in the day. I lost track of how many times I saw them live. This song came out on The Crow soundtrack, then came out on their album Betty a month later. They are the best. Check out Insatiable by them.

The Crow had such a good soundtrack, it’s actually the songtrack that introduced me to Pantera, which is still my favorite band today (they had a cover track on the soundtrack, The Badge… also very highly recommended song) …and I don’t think Helmet was ever “big”
@jasonmgomez2 жыл бұрын
Helmet was never big? Helmet is the ORIGINAL next Nirvana. Subject to a bidding war that such a label brings, they were the first band to sign a rookie $1M contract with a major label.
@zender19792 жыл бұрын
@@jasonmgomez alright my bad 😄 just keep in mind I’m not from the States…when I saw Helmet perform in Amsterdam in ‘97 it was in a very small venue. Don’t get me wrong, Helmet was super big for me personally, I just thought they never got mentioned when discussing important bands. Everybody always talks about the big names, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Anyway, nobody I know has ever heard of Helmet (I know, I need some better people in my life)

@@zender1979 They flirted with mainstream success but never got it. They were never big and a big spec contract is no proof of bigness.

This whole soundtrack, and the sequal soundtrack as well, were both really good. Also not sure why Helmet was never bigger then they were. They still tour and and have always been one of my favorite bands since the 90's. They always sound good and have alot of very good songs.

Helmet is part of the post hardcore nyc movement. Kind of daddys of the genre. There are gems on their very first cheap azz recordings. And by 2nd and 3rd album they were making full albums of goodness gaining huge international following before usa success. The commercial success came after a little while because the industry became more accepting of the Hardness, especially helped by the fact that they looked like accountants and boys that would cut your lawn. They had a bottom end like nothing else at the time and that was gorgeously accompanied by a freak drummer. Classical and jazz training, well written, well organized , powerful as a locomotive but can stop and turn on a dime (I may have written that in a review of a live show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in the 90’s where my favorite Australian act Regurgitator opened up for them !)

Helmet is amazing, with a subtly awesome guitarist. It’s tragic how they straddled metal + alt and then were forgotten by both. Love y’all’s reactions, discovered you through Opeth. Listen to Morphine sometime!

So the first time I saw this band was at GWU and they we're really good, then I saw them like maybe 20 years later at the Shindig concert in Baltimore and they were amazing but before them was The Reverend Horten Heat so I was pumped, Absolutely a great time. Just to br clear it was probably like 30 years if not more. I would love to do a reaction video with people younger then me to these bands I know.

I honestly can’t believe you haven’t seen The Crow. Such an original movie and the soundtrack essentially started the soundtrack movement of the 90’s. It became so important to have a good soundtrack because of this movie. GO SEE THE CROW. Let me know if you want you can borrow my blu ray!

Funny thing about Helmet, even though they are sort of unknown these days, when they were first taking off people really thought they were the "next big thing." They signed to Interscope for their second album, after having been on a much smaller indie label previously. Apparently Interscope gave them over a million dollars signing bonus. They were moderately successful but definitely more important as a musical influence on alt-metal and nu-metal (even though I'd argue Helmet are way cooler than any nu-metal). Also I always thought Page Hamilton's clean vocals were one of the major weaknesses of the band. He sounds like an absolute monster when he's screaming though. Check out the song "Turned Out" for the harder side of Helmet.
