Great job Merrill ! Love the animation. I would like to add that I have had good results detecting around large trees. I believe as the tree grows, and its roots grow, it pushes soil and what's in the soil up. I have found many old coins 80 plus years old no deeper than 2 or 3 inches. And to answer your question ….. my oldest coin was a 1887 Indian head penny, 2 inches deep under a large tree. Found that up here in Canada.

Totally on point. Damp ground is a great day for detecting. I've never found a coin deeper than 12" with my 15" coil on my Nox 800, so I agree that is about the limit. Thanks, great job.

The only time I use the gpx is when I'm relic hunting.I have never dug a coin that deep, but have dug button's well over a foot. Unfortunately not a lot of coins come up in those Civil war sites. Or at least I don't find them lol!

Here in Minnesota our soil is all dependent on location. There was a 100+ house I detected years ago where I found Indian head Pennies and buffalo nickels 2 inches or less under the ground. Then you go down the street and get into an old school where you find wheat Pennies from the 40s like 8 inches under the ground. Some places are like time capsules where the targets don’t go too deep

I get coins and rings as well as other goodies down in 2ft range using Fisher CZ21 water machines all the time in all metal mode - have to crank sensitivity and listen for slightest fluctuations in tone - I hit a lot of "hunted out" water spots and still get deep goodies many others miss - last few yrs I have used at CW hunts that had been hit by lots of other hunters and gotten deep CW bullets and musket balls as well as frags that I could see old holes near by - couple of other hunters near by went over my signals with top of the line land machines and could not pick them up - one guy said he got a "ghost" signal on every 4th swing but he thought I was chasing a ghost till I pulled a musketball close to 2 foot range

Merrill, what about I get a signal and start digging. The hole is about 8 inches deep by now, and I use my coil again ( I made the hole quite wide, just in case ). How much deeper can I go now? Philippe, Bradenton FL
@MetalDetectingNYC4 жыл бұрын
Do you use a pinpointer? Time saving piece of equipment!!! I would sweep my coil on all sides of the hole to see if one side gives me a stronger signal.

Also hit a 12-15" deep 1904-O barber quarter lol my entire arm was in the damn hole so i thought it was a big nail and got anxious and slashed the back of it like a jacka$$ lol lord have mercy. I was very upset. Im definitely getting the 6" and the 15" coils very soon

I think everyone has a concept of why various coins end up at depths they do. Obviously to me, over time debris and cuttings fill in over and decompose. Then over time it fills over enough to reach the new roots beginnings of the turf. Then since clad coins erode and develop the rough surface, the roots growing downward catch on that and start shooting them downward. If anyone notices sometimes silver coins are super shallow when clad is deeper, I always believed it was because the silver remains smooth and unblemished so it's more slippery, with the exception of larger quarters and bigger because of weight drop. But you may notice most silver dimes are fairly shallow while older nickels tend to be deep and not nearly as commonly found. There, I've solved it in my head to my own conclusion. As long as I'm half right, I'm only half wrong.
@shawnjones87484 жыл бұрын
But yes, natural yards composed of thick black soil are like sinkholes for coins. I've come across ancient properties with that type of soil and find very little until I come near the gravel driveway portions that slowed down the fall.
