I visit many old town and mine sites often, as I live nearby such places. It never occurred to me to use the trash I see as a great way to tell the dates, thanks for the info!

This is really interesting! No gold where i live, but i'm an amateur (for now) archeologist, so this is useful knowledge to know :)

I have about 4 piles of cans and other rusty metal rubbish like this on 5 acres I just bought. I already knew there was a fair amount of small scale placer mining activity there, but really didn't know how to date it. Can't wait to get back up there and take a closer look at the cans. Really great info, thanks! Cheers, Chris.

Nice video, good info. Often can dumps got burned back in the day and unfortunately with all those the inks and painted labels got destroyed. Occasionally I find a can (where fire hadn't occurred), it having the rare fortune of missing most of the elements (decades of intense summer heat, rain, snow, sun etc) and retaining some color and definition. Some automotive products, like additives and brake fluid etc were also sold in cone tops. I think threaded lids might differentiate these from beer. The guys who are regulars with The Rusty Bunch are experts on beer cans.

Thanks for the tin can dating video. I learned a lot from watching it now I know how to date old sites more accurately! 😁

Awesome vid again bro! I actually date cans when out relic hunting, especially in flood zones to attempt to date time against depth in my targets.

Nice, this video was one of my favorite to make. I had a whole series of Metal Detectives planned haha, both of them I made were my least popular vids though so I abandoned it. It is a great method for dating sites and finds though. I hadn't thought about the flood zone idea.

I found what I think is an old tin can. It is 21"ish high and 9.5" diameter and it has a lid. The can also has what I think is vent holes in diamond pattern at the top and bottom. I would post a picture but I don't see how I can do that in this comment.
