discovered Atarashi Gakko after babymetal. been an epic journey following their work as well. from my understanding they do all their own choreography for each song, and are epic live. so much fun and crowd interaction

The opening tune is not Black Eyed Peas it is from Godzilla. They are challenging Japan to break the dregs of life in Urban Japan which is a joyless life. They are marching to bring society along. If you watch the mv it will make sense. They are killers live that Coachella performance was streamed live and they absolutely blew that place up. In lives Suzuka likes to crowd surf, go out into the crowd just go nuts. She is definitely an Osaka girl. Osaka’s population is known for being more outgoing and “wild” than the rest of Japan. I think it would be interesting for you to go back to their 1st video Dokubana and watch it. I willing it at end of this message. It is another totally different sound that I think you will like as a metal fan. Metal fans for some reason, me included are just drawn to this band. Note on the mv read the lyrics before hand as the video does not have captions. As for their popularity they have been around for around a decade and were not “big”, outside of TikTok. 2 things broke them, signing with 88 Rising and Otona Blue, which had already been out a couple of years just took off. "Tokyo Calling" is about fighting the frustrations and alienation of modern life. AG! play various characters beaten down my their circumstances and then cast themselves as superheros to save everyone. The ending is a call to solidarity. AG! are all trained dancers and do all their own choreography, they even develop dances for other groups. They work with producers on the songs and often write the lyrics. This artistic involvement sets then apart from the usual J-pop group. Their new album "AG! Calling" which released recently is varied musically, and is quite punk in that it comes in at barely over 30 minutes with a lot of short, punchy tracks which make their point and don't hang around. 'Fly High' was the single before the most recent one and the MV for that is very cool and worth checking out. They have been gaining an international following over the last few years, partly social media driven through Otona Blue during Covid, and they have done international tours a bit like when Babymetal started getting attention outside Japan in the mid twenty-tens. They write and choreograph themselves much more than a traditional idol group, which they did first start off as when they were teenagers but got released and decided to carry on under their own steam.

Fly High (music video) and Forever Sister are pretty good songs. Hopefully one day we'll get that dream collab with Atarashii Gakko X Babymetal.

glad you enjoyed it! this performance is more tamed than their usual, given the setting, but if you want to get a feel of their real live energy, i'd recommend you watch clips from concerts. their Coachella performance was amazing, i'd really recommend you check it out. especially songs like Arigato or NaiNaiNai! in concerts, Suzuka is always jumping into the arena, running all around the stage, and having pretty fun interactions with the audience. she really knows how to work a crowd, even with the language barrier. as for the genre, yes! every song you hear by them is going to be pretty different. they really do whatever they want. i've also heard their choreographies have a more masculine dance style (according to choreographers), which i find pretty cool coming from a girl group that many would think is an idol group, which usually have more feminine and "cute" styles of dancing

IMO this song is kinda like The Clash's song, "London Calling". Since I took my daughter to see Band-Maid and Babymetal last year, she's taking me to see these ladies in Chicago in October. Japan is killing it right now. 🤘

I wouldn't call them mainstream yet; though they have been getting lots of recognition since they became associated with 88rising (which is the firm they signed with in order to become an international act). They are still very much a niche group. If you want to continue reacting to them, I suggest "Seishun wo kirisaki hado", so you get to know yet another side of them, musically speaking.
