RIP Alexi...this man had one of the most iconic stage presence, playing style, vocals, and guitar playing to me...definitely inspired me in so many ways

"Great riff". Alexi was about 18 years old when he wrote that riff...and hundred more. He was a true talent. They/he used to be much tighter back in the days, but I guess all that alcohol and injuries took their share...but they still had great shows til the end. I remember in early 2000's, that there were quite bad atmosphere in Finnish metal forums, and Alexi got a lot of critique about these riffs and leads, that "they are not even metal" or that "sounds like some Nintendo shit", and that "they are easy to play" etc. Well, he had his own style, and that made CoB so special to many.

i bet those that called them easy riffs, didnt even play guitar
@NightwishArena3 жыл бұрын
@@einwindir7892 might be, or maybe they were phenomenal guitarists themselves, idk. We had (and still have) those in Finland quite a lot. Or maybe they didn't appreciate sweep picking, tapping or whammy use. I think the bottom line was, that they are not that hard as they sound, and that they didn't like the sound overall. Those are of course a matter of taste, but for me they always sounded incredible. And for what I have tried to learn myself, they are definitely not easy. I was metal guitarist myself back then.

Whoever said what Alexi wrote was easy to play is a fucking liar. The man wrote some of the most insane riffs and leads I've ever heard. It took me three years to learn how to play the solo for Kissing the Shadows, and to this day I still can't play it entirely correct.

Their live guitar tone was 100% intentionally dry like that. And the keyboard player actually has a guitar overdrive pedal on his signal chain 😄 so the retro-tone with the keys isn’t unintentional either. Sidenote (for all of those who are unfamiliar with this band): one of the main things that makes them so respected in the metal community is how well their band works together, especially by composition how seamlessly those guitars and keys blend 👌🏻

Yeah, I've always kind of considered them a super group. For sure Alexi and Janne get a lot of the attention for their unique styles. But the rest of the band is just as solid. You can tell they fucking love music and playing. I love the covers they do. They play with their own attitude and not just "make it faster or heavier" and it's a metal cover.

This is one of the best and most influential bands of all time. Alexi and me share the same name, he died on my birthday in 2020. The band is also managed by a company that shares my last name (Davis). He was my idol as a kid man. Can’t even describe the pain that I won’t see him again live. But he will live on forever.

I’d always start on studio versions when having to do anything metal when first listening to it. Alexi was a great guitarist, a guitar god, but he was starting to be quite drunk when playing live and not at his best. That’s the whole reason he died. Consumption I thought was something people died from in the olden days, but I guess not. It’s sad knowing he lived that must drink like a fish lifestyle.

Well, it is good to hear that you did not hate the song. dated keyboard sound might be from that it was recorded in early 2000's ?

even back in the day there were metalheads having gripes with the cheapish sounding harpsichord though i remember forum posts from all the way in the early naughties i don't share the same sentiments, as the playing is superb, but to each their own. anyway, that tells me the sound was even a tad dated when it was fresh which i don't mind either hell, pantera stuck to those 80s style gated reverb on the snaredrums until forever, they never really bothered to change that snare sound much, even when everyone was playing grunge and wanted that natural 90s drumkit sound, it worked for them just fine stick to the oversaturated 80s style of drums :D
