Hey Geebz! cool to see you outside the channel. Yeah I like Mike's very honest thought out perspectives. I haven't watched many of his videos because I simply don't have time, but it's always an interesting view. I think that the negative criticisms here regarding metal are only valid to certain types of metal though, and I think all of the metal where this doesn't apply much has been ignored.

I find it annoying how other metal musicians seem to act like their music is super unique when it really isn't, rather than learning to embrace that their music is iterative and traditional by today's standards. I like to make riff-driven sludgy stoner doom songs, and I often like to compare the creative process to blues music: it has a specific sound, certain melodies and rhythms, and has somewhat strict subject matter. Whenever I tell people that my music is iterative and unoriginal they assume that I'm being self-deprecating, when I genuinely don't see those things as inherently bad. It's music that l like, and is within my means to play. I see my genre as musical comfort food; it consistently hits the spot, and I can listen to it at almost any time. While I also love listening to progressive music, I just don't have the time or interest to make something like that.

"Progressive music" has lost a lot of of its "progressive" ideals and now has traditions and trappings like any other genre. That's why bands are still chasing the Tool sound, the Dream Theater sound, etc. In a sense "progressive music" has become a genre with specific stylings, not music that is pushing any sort of envelope inherently And, yeah fusion is WAY cooler in terms of progressive music vs. rock. It's just more "fun" in my opinion.
@dr.juerdotitsgo5119

IMO progressive in the true sense of the word were the early 70's rock bands like Genesis, Yes, Van der Graaf, and the late 70's/early 80's post-punk bands like Talking Heads, Magazine, Gang of Four. The sense of cohesive song structure was complete lost with Prog Metal. Jazz fusion is a whole different ball game though. Its virtuosity is actually functional; each player has to go through this intricate maze of uninstinctive chords and come up with something creative while they're doing it.

I always looked at the title "Progressive" as more of a reference to the less standard song structure, rather than implying that the song or band is making some type of progress in music itself. If that's the case then any artist doing anything new could be considered "Progressive". (I know that's kind of what you're getting at, but I disagree with the nomenclature) Either way, just like any genre title, "Progressive" is what a certain sound of music was given when it first came in the limelight. It is now a noun in this context, not an adjective. I think another example of this is Gangster Rap. There are now plenty of rappers in that genre that aren't really gangsters. It is no longer a description of the origin of that sound, but a title in itself.

Interesting discussion. On the part about writing from vocals. I came from a metal background. One trick that used to help me was to write some guitar melodies by singing over the chords first until I had something that was moving to me. By starting on vocals and using my voice, it made the phrasing more relatable I think and led to melodies that were more catchy. I didn't do it for all guitar melodies, and I did start with chord structures, but for me it was a bit of a breakthrough. I also made a point of taking a long time to write the melody (listening to a recording of the chords for the day and singing over it throughout the day)

I've been playing guitar for 20 years and have studied theory for about 5 years. I learned how to identify more chords on piano than guitar after 1 lesson. Obviously not memorized but could figure it out just by counting half-steps. I wish I had picked up piano along with guitar back then because it really makes theory so much more straightforward where an instrument like guitar is camouflaged. Using both to write can be very advantageous.

So an interesting thing about Linkin Park's song writing I learned from the Minute to Midnight special edition DVD. While working with Rick Rubin he told them that they wrote music like pop or rap artists instead of rock artists in Hybrid Theory and Meteora with lyrics first. So they did a lot of experimenting with how they wrote songs on the record in different. It's probably why sonically it's the most all over the place record.

On writing from vocals or other instruments, I think you see more in certain sub-genres. The main songwriters for Powerwolf and Alestorm are keyboardists so they probably start there, and bands like Amorphis, Insomnium, Eluveitie, etc also sound like they are starting from something other than guitar. I don't listen to a lot of pop/dance music, but from watching hockey, I hear pop/dance remixes of classic rock and metal songs playing at arenas after whistles pretty often. Clearly some in the dance sphere are listening to catchy rock and metal and realizing there are hooks that cross over well. Why can't it work both ways?

I feel like in media at large, it’s not just that it promotes clout chasers but that it’s polarized between clout chaser and pure, unfettered artist. There are ways in which artists are presented, even falsely, as incredible visionaries who are on a whole other plane of existence from us mere mortals. The superficial trappings of the pure artist are merely used as branding. Tantacrul’s video “Musical Elitism Is Everywhere” has a segment exploring this aspect of culture further. Also, this perception can sometimes lead people to romanticize suffering, outcast artists who need genuine help rather than fetishistic attention. Society needs to not only reject clout chasing but understand artistry on a healthier, more meaningful level.

Actually good example of metal songs being written around vocal melody, certain black sabbath songs, like Iommi said on the 7 ages of rock documentary series, "if we did the guitars first the vocal melody wouldn't work".

I’m so glad I found this video after the new Sleep Token dropped, because I feel like their inspiration and willingness to change genres makes them really progressive and answers a lot of the complaints the guys have. TMBTE may not be your cup of tea, but I totally appreciate Sleep Token’s willingness to try new stuff in metal

I watched Mike on his Knight channel one time, doing an album ranking of best and worst metal bands or some such, and there was A LOT of things I disagreed with him on to the point I didn't want to take him seriously; I do however respect that he can back up (more or less) his points and why he makes them. Good vid, the exchange of ideas and opinions is very engaging.

Kind of how Finn is with all types of rock music that’s kind of the way I am with hip-hop. With rock and metal I was able to go back and appreciate bands in albums before the early 90s, I love all the great thrash stuff from the 80s, I love Black Sabbath I love Ozzy Osbourne solo stuff. But with hip-hop, I have all the respect in the world for Eric B and Rakim, KRS-1, Slick Rick etc. and when I listen to them, I can definitely tell that these were like some of the most lyrical rappers of their time and I can tell that they pushed the envelope for lyricism and that maybe they weren’t the guys on the radio with the biggest hits all the time, but lyrically no one could touch them, but for me, other than NWA if it came out before 1990 I can’t get into earlier hip-hop. I got in to hip-hop with ice cube solo career really and anything before that I can respect it but it’s not something I can sit down and listen to and vibe to and enjoy, but I would never disrespected. I do think people all around need to be better with that. No matter if it’s old music or new music. It’s OK if you don’t like whatever, this is just entertainment no one is forcing us to listen to anything, but we also don’t need to run people down and harass artist in fans online like were Star Wars fans just because we choose not to like something someone else enjoys.

Very interesting conversation. Metal does too often tend to box itself in by repeating the guttural vocals and brutal percussive instrumentation repeatedly, which has been done before by endless others. I like it better personally when those types of things are done as an accent at times within a song (ie breakdown / bridge section etc) but not for a whole song, or worse; a whole album. Melody is important, even in heavy music.

What a dumb point... There is shit ton of melodeath since 90s and id argue its most boring genre in metal. I listen to a lot of melodic music but when its done masterfully like in opeth it is good.

Even though the new music that gets labeled as "progressive rock/metal" has seemingly grown pretty stale, I feel like actual progressive and innovative music still exists, just under different labels. Maybe under "art rock", "psychedelic rock", "jazz fusion", "post-rock", "experimental rock"...

I’m super guilty starting songs with guitar. I’m trying to get away from that because in music college one of my composition teachers said “try to write away from the piano” and I translate that to guitar because that’s my instrument. So guitar kind of becomes a crutch.

Big chick corea/ Wayne shorter fan too! Return to forever is incredible. I’ll posit a theory- Finn likes the jazz stuff because metal nerds haven’t ruined it, they don’t know about it. Also the album you’re thinking of with the knight is the romantic warrior.

I'm the same way about Pink Floyd/old rock and metal. Because I started with heavier bands, I wasn't able to "work backwards". It's taken me a long time to appreciate some classic rock, but I still have a lot of controversial opinions about music from the 60/70/80s

What does demand have to do with 'progressive', exactly? Yes, creating vocal harmonies is important, but let's ask ourselves, why is it so prevalent in pop? A catchy vocal line is easier to sell. This has nothing to do with progressive music in and of itself unless you're only looking to appeal to a wider audience. The fact is, a wider audience isn't always going to accept something progressive as they're looking for something quick and consumable. Jimi came at the right time and place as well as others before him. He is an exception.

My favorite kind of “metal” is the kind that has a mixture of brutal, heavy vocals and a catchy/well sung hook and chorus. I’m sure “tRuE mEtAlHeAds” would say that it sucks, but is such a GREAT combination. Bury Tomorrow’s song “Death (ever colder)” which was released earlier this year is a GREAT example of what I love! Veil of Maya’s “Viscera” is a good example as well.

Although I understand what you're saying about finding the 3rd or the 5th on piano vs. Guitar, it's actually easier on guitar in some ways. At least if we're staying say any standard. The third for example at least dealing with the say the bottom for strings is always going to be one-string up and one fret behind wherever you start assuming not on an open string etc. Now piano in the keys of C or A minor, sure.

Like early prog. Still my favorite genre. I think that if you don't like classic prog it's probably because of the classical influences in it which is more technical than jazz and less sexy elements in it, for example Yes, ELP, Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Camel, Caravan, etc. It's part of the english classical tradition. But if you want a real hard rockin' early prog try Van Der Graff Generator and their album Pawn Hearts.

Oh and music being truly progressive, I completely agree with Finn Mckenty about Chick Corea and Jazz Rock Fusion stuff being "progressive" in literal sense. For me its Pat Metheny. Some KZbinr mentioned Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever being considered in extent of "progressive rock" and I really think he has good point.
