On top of that, investing in people and their personality flaws is possibly the single riskiest investment an investor can make. While there needs to be a bit of a "hands off" approach, I can understand why labels drive such a hard bargain as well.

The sad thing is that a lot of people look at band financial survival struggles today and say "Man, I wish it was like back in the day" while forgetting that it was just as hard if not harder to survive back then for a lot of artists. A common theme for a lot of signed bands is that their label would completely change management and staff overnight, leading to awkward "....and you are...?" encounters with the people who are supposed to promote you but are utterly fixated on the next hot item. Labels could drop you like girlfriends.

Last time I toured was in 93'. I was a roadie for a local punk band called 7 Seconds, and we'd pull about 90 shows in about 110 days. Very hectic schedule. Pay was good, and was around $220 per week, plus $20-$30 per diem for show days. All expenses including food and lodging were paid. I remember getting bonus after the tours if we sold more merch than the merch company gave the band an advance for. It was good times for a kid in his late teens/early 20's.

Now for the serious comment. Publishing is THE WHOLE ENCHILADA. If you own the publishing, you're gonna get paid for every song on every album that is MANUFACTURED, not sold. Let's say I was a band's manager, and I managed to get them a deal with a major label. By owning the publishing, assuming the album has 10 songs on it, at 9.1 centes per song, I earn 91 cents for every record, CD and cassette the factory churns out. If the label presses 1 million copies, that comes to $910,000 paid to that manager and newly-created band publisher, even if that band with that "IT" only manages to sell 10 copies. Had I known where the money was when I was younger, I wouldn't be sitting here at a desk typing any of my bullshit. Just sayin' . . .

Idk. I like the idea of someone not being able to alter your music or shelve you. It’d be better if labels were more like banks offering loans but they take soo much of the profit and control so much more than how much you take in. It’s like letting someone max out your credit card and make bad choices and then you have to pay their debt. They will promote you badly, limit your, tell you how to sound, control when you get paid and you have so little control. The deal they offered is pretty solid. I’d let them own 50 percent, for maybe an album. Not forever. But to get started? Sure, I’d do that

The only "it" a band needs to show to investors is marketability, momentum, a fan following with signs of possible growth, synergy with their scene, etc. It doesn't matter if you have talent, if you are an 18 year old prodigy, if your bass player looks like John Lennon or if your drummer needs to take a bath. Hell, you don't even need to look like you might make a hit record even once. You need to look like you will bring in some profit, and having "it" doesn't mean you will. This bloke just came in, said they have "it", had them play one song and asked for a pile of cash. He didn't show whether they are ready to record and album or if they already have one, if they have enough songs to play gigs, if they have enough people interested in them to fill venues, no merch designs, didn't show if they have presence on their scene or on social media. These are the things that show if you have momentum as a band, any fool can write one song.

Alas, we will never know-- My main question is: Is that a Sennheiser MD421 you're using?? I spent about a decade in FM broadcast booths and in all but one, **that** was the mic of choice!! When I first heard them play I was like "this sounds like background music from a michelob ultra commercial." I wonder if one of the sharks could have wielded their influence to get that to happen. Or like, subaru or one of those other brands that targets upper middle class white guys, with shots of people hiking with their dogs and having campfires to generic indie fuzz rock backing tracks

I’ve only heard the part where they performed and I liked it quite a bit but this is the worst way to go about getting successful. They could easily tour the local scene get better a what they do and make it somewhat. To go to shark tank for investment makes the band look like they don’t know what they’re doing and it’s a shame.

There’s no such thing as an overnight success. Many of us started playing instruments at 10-11 years old. Played in countless bands, wrote hundreds of songs. Like you say. Your commitment must go beyond surface level. You’re simply requires too much dedication and passion to even make a scratch in the surface of this insane business. In the end though. The thousands of hours and shitty basements, Pham practice for five times a week, getting drunk and punching your drummer in the face, you getting punched back in the face eventually. You begin to wonder why we do it to ourselves, then you get those 45 minutes on stage. If you haven’t experienced it it’s impossible to describe,, sort of like a prostate orgasm. You only know it when it’s right on top of you.. lol Music is my mistress and my foe. I wouldn’t want it any other way

This is considered dad rock? A carbon copy of a “The” band? Dad rock is, like, The Metallicas, or at least The AC/DCs. Give dads a little more credit than that.
