This is an inter-lingual pun that AG like to do. The pronunciation of "Tokyo Calling" actually sounds like 東京降臨 (Tōkyō kōrin). Which translates to "Tokyo descends". There are different ways to interpret it, like them descending on Tokyo like a destructive Kaiju. They also portray the heroes that save Tokyo, like how the people need to fight the metaphorical kaiju that is depression and boredom. I think the Beastie Boys inspiration for the videoclip is undeniable and I love it!

You nailed it! One of the very best things about AG! is that they don't shy away from big, deep, serious, topics in their songs yet they always look like they are just having an absolute blast in their performances. They are so much smarter then what you'd think from a quick glance. They'll tackle huge societal issues, like p*rn, substance abuse, SA, depression, social isolation, and much more. But they'll put that big social commentary message out to a jazz beat or something, and have the most batshit crazy good time in their choreo. They don't shy away from serious topics but they don't try and get to political and always try to keep things light and fun. Or they'll just do a fun bop about high school romances or kicking off steam after class that just is all about living your best life. Plus, they can't be put into a box musically. They play with so many different styles and genres of music calling them J-Pop or J-Rock, or any label really does not do them justice. AG! is great! Plus, I am going to see them live in a few weeks when they stop by in Toronto on their whirlwind North American tour next month! Can't wait to see these girls absolutely kill it in their live show!

I've been subbed to 88rising since 2017, so I've always been aware of AG but never actually listened to them. Then they dropped this banger and now I've been obsessed, great band. So many great singles in just the last year or two alone.

Everything they do is just crazy creative. I’m a lifelong metalhead. I rarely listen to anything with clean vocals. Well…. Except for jpop?? How did that happen? lol. So much creativity coming from Japanese artists. Just love it.
@not-so-great-oldone9780 Жыл бұрын
I’m with you, lifelong metal head, but there’s something about jpop that draws you in, especially groups like Atarashii Gakko. Also The Devil’s Killing Merry Go Round or Mad Medicine that incorporate metal elements into their music.

I've been a die-hard metalhead for 20+ years. I had never heard the name 'Atarashii Gakko!' until 6 days ago, when I super randomly opened a Twitch channel that was going to live stream a concert of AG! (at Primavera Sound, BCN). I decided to check them out for 5 minutes. I ended up watching the entire show, completely mesmerized. I've been watching videos of them ever since (that's how I've landed here), to the point that I started to doubt my sanity. I feel a bit relieved to know that I'm not the only metal fan who loves them, and not the only person almost obsessed with them.

Enjoy your trip to Tokyo! I love this MV at first glance. For my 50's years old generation, the first impression of mine is 'Ultra Guard' from 'Ultra Seven' (1967) from the girl's costumes, and the another reminds me of an episode, '1/8 project' from 'Ultra Q' (1966). That diorama set must have cost a lot of money, haha. Furthermore 'Intergalactic' by Beastie Boys, and maybe 'Attack on Titans'. It's a really fun MV that tickles the fancy of the old men's generation and leaves a lot to the imagination.👍 The lyrics are also interesting. But don't pose bad Rin-chans at the perfect timings at 1:22, 3:22, lolol. Thank you from Japan! There's a video clip that preceded this MV, which premiered on TV.

I found them through a Captain Disillusion clip, followed by this ditty. Ngl, it instantly gave me "Intergalactic" vibes (if you know, you know), like a sequel. They really are refreshing compared to the "usual" tarento groups out there. Especially Suzuka is such a bundle of energy, love watching her.
