One thing many people don't realize about Kanami, she has only been playing guitar for about 15 years. When they recorded this, she had only been playing guitar for about 4, almost 5 years. She has been playing piano since shortly before her 4th birthday, so she was already a talented musician, but it took lots of work for her to go from a beginning guitarist to where she was in this MV while also completing an economics degree and taking vocal lessons. So when you look at her playing and listen to it's complexity, you have to realize just how much work she has put in to get where she is. In the past she actually gave herself tendonitis and had to relearn her picking style with holding her pick a different way. So please always remember the hard work she has put in. And then realize, that she is not alone in the amount of work she has put into the band. MISA started with a 4 string and would only play fingerstyle or with a pick. She didn't really play with slap and pop until 2014-2015, then she switched to a 5 string and perfected her pick flick to the amazement of us all. Then there is Akane's taking her drumming from the good she was at the beginning to where she is now. Then there is Miku who didn't even know how to play guitar in 2013 to being a top rhythm player/singer, in addition to all of her PR and behind the scenes duties. And Saiki who almost lost her voice, until she got surgery and vocal training, and is now one of the best female rock vocalists. These 5 Ladies put so much effort into their music for their fans, that it is embarrassing that they are NOT more well known.

This is the greatest band that no one is listening to, and I don't understand why. Band-Maid is doing what few other bands are doing: hard-prog-pop-rock with clean vocals, excellent lyrics, and immaculate composition. There's nothing not to like about their music - it's all good. When you do the deep dive and explore what these five women have accomplished over the last ten years, you might find yourself looking at a musical legacy that rivals the best that classic rock has to offer. Who else would make an incredible April Fools EP like Band-Maiko? Who else could successfully rewrite and rearrange 15 of their best rockers as acoustic songs and release the concert as a Christmas gift to their fans? I've seen them live twice this year and they are amazing live performers. People do not know what they're missing.

Yes Etoine...The intentional ignorance of Band Maid is perplexing ! I can understand it to a point . The knee-jerk reaction to my first Band Maid song was " Uh , no , are you kidding ? If you want my attention or to take you seriously, you should sing in English ! " However...The MUSIC was SO good , I had to listen to another...then another ! By the time I got to ONSET live I was thinking " Uh , okay...I don't give a sh** what language they're singing in ...This is WAY too good ! Time to ditch the narrow -mindedness and see where this takes you ! ". Within a couple days , I was in... VERY deep . Getting others to see past the language has been tough sledding ! Strange analogy alert ::: If the best beer in the world was called DIARRHEA...How many people would never give it a chance ? I would think...." Uh , no ... I don't care how good it is . I've got MY standards so change the name . " 5 Japanese girls can't possibly be the best rock band on earth ...Or CAN THEY ??

@@frankandre4385 I don't get the "But if only they sang in English!" It's perplexing to me. How many metal bands are there whose lyrics are screamed unintelligibly? I had a co-worker who was lead screamer for a metal band (Twelve Tribes). Another friend commented that his lyrics were really good but you couldn't understand what he was saying unless you read the CD's liner notes. With Band-Maid you can look up the lyrics and get a translation almost immediately. Miku's lyrics blend English and Japanese in a variety of clever ways and you could say they would lose meaning if translated wholly into English. Saiki's lyrics are quite direct but Miku sneaks in puns and homonyms that only work by mixing English and Japanese. Frankly, I do think they're best band on earth. It's not any one thing they do, it's the fact that they work so hard to get everything right and then never stop working to make it all better. It's not just the compositions, or the lyrics, or the musicianship, or the production values, but all those things and more mixed with their work ethic and attitude.

@@frankandre4385 ... The same thing was, & still is, being said about the band BTS (Bulletproof Boyscouts), in that they aren't singing/rapping in English, thus people don't want to listen to them just because of the language barrier. Now BTS are the largest band in the world because there are indeed many people who see & hear beyond the language barrier as well as seeing beyond racism & xenophobia. The same could be said of Band-Maid, about them also being Asian with a language other than English in the western perspective. There are so much more music in the world today that these good bands can be drowned out. Just as with BTS, the western music industry does not recognize many more songs not in English. BTS had already been succeeding in the west with their own Korean language songs for many years now, but when they decided to enter the western markets with English songs, they succeeded a lot more. Now they have Grammy nominations & other western music awards & multiple Billboard charting. This can happen with Band-Maid should the gals want to try out that direction with English. The Dragon Cries seems to be their only full English song. But it's just more than that, rock & roll is sort of a dying breed as far as the music industry in concerned, though not totally dead. I think that in order for Band-Maid to keep succeeding, they need to keep experimenting & also keep reinventing & then they might find another viral hit, much like Thrill, that will keep them from disbanding sooner than later. And the fans need to keep pushing for the Maids, as a celebrity would not exist without their fans. I also know the maid costumes can also be a bit deviating & a bit derisive to new listeners, so I have to wonder if one day the Maids could drop the costumes & wear something else, much to the chagrin of Miku, heh. As was said, as long as you decide to go down a rabbit hole, the more you start to respect, approve & recognize, whether the BTS, Band-Maid or other rabbit hole. Fun trivia: BTS & Band-Maid debuted the same year a couple months apart. Both have the twin lightning bolts in their logos (new Maid logo & original BTS logo). And while the Maids may have the world domination themes in their songs, BTS has been dominating the world. It's wishful thinking but maybe one day, Band-Maid & BTS could collab on a song or two, when BTS returns from their military conscription duties. A little push from the biggest band in the world, BTS, may not be so bad & could be a push the Maids might need, if people are willing. John Reaves is a huge BTS fan & also becoming a Maid fan in his own respect. There are many Band-Maid fans in the BTS fanbase, so there should be no hating by Maidiacs who think that that might be a conflict of interest, as BTS themselves have some songs with some rock/metal music elements in them, although hiphop is BTS' core style. And there are plenty of rock/metal bands you can find on youtube who cover BTS songs in their own interpretation.

@@etoineschrdlu9382 Good points Etoine ! I don't know anyone who " sings " along with thrash but I know people who love to sing along with a catchy song . I would love to sing along with many Band Maid songs (the latest being the original version of SMILE ) , but I don't , and it is somewhat frustrating . I've looked up the lyrics and I know what the song is about . Japanese , even when it is phonetically spelled out , is very difficult to sing along with . The speed with which Saiki sings makes it even more difficult . In order to keep my singing voice in shape I've got to pop out the Band Maid CD and put in something I can sing along to . It's frustrating but it doesn't diminish my love for the Maids !

40+ years of listening to music have taught me one thing at least: there is little consistent correlation between a band's talent and their popularity. If anything, casual observation would seem to support the notion that the more talented the band, the less popular they are. That shouldn't come as a surprise; unique talent usually comes with a unique style as well as compositional complexity, and that is going to appeal to a smaller audience. Haute cuisine would still be less popular than pizzas and beef burgers, even if they were priced the same. Given the usual hurdles Japanese bands have to overcome to break out into overseas markets, BAND-MAID are doing _relatively_ well.

Fun fact about this video. It was so cold out that the maids had to wear puffy long coats and hang around the fire pyrotechnics to keep warm and the drummer accidently set herself on fire while trying to warm her back.

That's funny! Their fan page, Band-Maid Prime just released a 'Making of "Shambles" ' video. The shoot was from dawn to dusk and the dilapidated and breezy warehouse they filmed in was only 4°C (39°F). They were all wearing winter coats between takes and were quite delighted when the flames were turned on and warmed them up!

Kanami is playing a strat-shaped AddicTone, MISA playing the Fender J-bass she bought for herself when she started on bass. This is before Saiki's surgery; she would say she doesn't have any volume or stamina but she goes all out and she ain't bad. This song wasn't written by the band; the lyrics are by Kanata Nakamura and the music is by Toshinari Ohnishi. I assume they chose the song and worked with them on it, and it shows that they can play anything to a high level, whether they wrote it or not.

@@frankandre4385 Wow that's a novel 😁 I get the frustration and the genuine goodwill for BMs success, but that word success is very subjective. In my time in the music industry I worked with artists at all levels and they'd pretty much sell their mothers to be having the global fan base BM has after ten years. There's a whole range of reasons why I believe you'll never hear BM on local radio but is that an appropriate measuring stick. Do I want to see them with more recognition and support, fck yeah, but on their terms and I believe above everything these strong women will stay true to themselves and their music, to quote Saiki she "don't give a fck what people say"; I can see BM making music and setting fire to stages for the next 20 years, if they can make a comfortable living and be happy doing that, that's big time success. Doesn't mean that I don't want them to pack out stadiums and festivals if that's where they want to be, but I pretty much guarantee that if at the beginning you said to BM in ten years you'll still be going, have multiple albums under your belt, strong critical acclaim, close on 200 million YT views and a passionate fanbase that sees you able to play live all over the world, each one would have gone fcken crazy Po 😁 Whew I think I worked up a thirst 😃

One of their early epic songs. You can tell it's an early song as Saiki's voice is "different" that it is today, it still sounds like a teen girl to me, as it's still sort of nasally, before her cord polyp surgery a couple years later after this song.

[Rant #41] Sorry, but I can only take so much apathy towards excellence. I mean, just listen to this song! The Non Fiction Days has been out since May, 2016 yet they only have 527K YT subs after 10 years with more than 120 incredible songs like this one, and over 400 live concert performances. Are the Maids not enough of a shiny object for people. Are they not good enough musicians, or writers, or pretty enough? (Stupid question, huh?! ;-) I've been harping about this for years and just don't get it. Thanks to all the viewers who know how to recognize an authentic band, fantastic music, and who support Band-Maid in some way. And thanks to John, for covering another Band-Maid rocker!

Good rant Tom ! Take a careful listen to the absolute crap that passes for popular music today . Turn on any top 40 station...Garbage from top to bottom . Band Maid breaks a mold that the industry DOES NOT WANT BROKEN !! Perhaps you expect fairness from the music industry ? Common sense ? The fix is in ...The masses are being controlled ! You will listen to what we tell you to ! When and if Band Maid makes it to a local radio station you better have the smelling salts out ! I've seen far too many of my favorite bands become " sell outs " . If Band Maid ever loses creative control of their brand you will see a change . Until then , I can live with their " unpopularity " .

@@frankandre4385 Yeah, I can also live with their relative "unpopularity." But I want them to be successful for their sake. So they can have the resources and clout to always do, play and create what and where they want. As for being controlled by the music industry. It's really not the industry's fault. They will always follow popularity and the money that generates -- even if it comes from Milli Vanilli tribute lip-syncers mouthing Three Blind Mice. No, the problem lies with the music public and their purchases. I keep forgetting that most people live a dumbed-down mental existence, i.e. corrupt political leaders and their followers, for example. Most people can't even talk coherently, much less listen to music that goes beyond simple tribal beats and sounds like poppy-hip-hoppy-rap crap. 🤘😉 Thx, Frank!

@@frankandre4385 Well said! I'm sure the industry is watching Band Maid. When they have acquired enough of a fan base, then the music mafia will move in.With investments in the billions, with hordes of rappers and squeaky ukulele players, they don't want to take a chance. They want the musicians to do all the work and then grab it, copyright and all. They have been doing this for decades. Once they are ready, you will hear some of their vassals (like Rick Beato) start to say "nice" things about the band. Then, the move is on. Their venues will get better in terms of time and stages; the industry will roll out the red carpet. I just hope Miku and Kanami (studied economics) catch on soon enough and tell them to take a hike. But it will be hard to resist when they trundle up wheelbarrows of money.
