Ghost of Perdition - Opeth One of the best songs ever written. The way it flows from growls to soft falsettos and how it perfectly compliments the instrumental AND how it's perfectly in sync with the story line/message of the song. Masterfully crafted! Deserving of the word masterpiece.

There are a few I could list, but I’m gonna say Between the Buried and Me’s “Selkies: the Endless Obsession” from their album Alaska. Entire album is great, but this song in particular is just above and beyond. Like a modernized, proggy Opeth, but with bits of synth and even early metalcore vibes mixed in. Every member of the band shines. It’s a must listen, and hardly anyone I know has even heard it…

I love Unholy Confessions but I personally think A7X have so many songs that I'd consider 'a masterpiece' over Unholy Confessions. From each album other than the first and the latest, I'd say Unholy Confessions or both parts of I Won't See You Tonight for WTF, M.I.A for COE, A Little Piece Of Heaven for the self-titled, Save Me or Nightmare for Nightmare, Coming Home for HTTK and either The Stage or Exist for The Stage. But out of all these, I think M.I.A deserves to be called a masterpiece the most.

I think that from HTTK are two more songs that deserve recognition in the fandom: Acid Rain and Requiem. And in Diamonds in the Rough are four more: Set Me Free, The Fight, Dancing Dead and the alternative version of Afterlife (the original itself is near a masterpiece). And in the rest of the albums are other songs that deserve more recognition, but one that has to be mentioned over all (IMO) is Cosmic A7X is the only band I've seen that have so many songs near perfection

Everyone has their own standard for "perfection". A lot of folks look at technical skill and boundary pushing. Personally, I look for sincerity, foremost, and the unique voice that often comes from it (particularly in Metal, and in Metal it does have to kick a little ass of course). Some popular/very well known songs that come to mind are War Pigs by Sabbath, Orion by Metallica, Overkill by Motorhead, Hallowed by thy Name by Maiden, Screaming for Vengeance by Priest... and so many more. Sure, these are huge bands, and "popular", but there is a reason for that.

@@tiffy3260 for me the issue with TMBTE has largely been the production choices. The autotuned, overcompressed vocals diminishes the subtle emotional nuances Vessel portrays live. "Vore" especially gets such a bad rap because of that messy intro on the album. But Vore live is loved by anyone who witnesses Vessel and IVs dual scream clarity.
