I was a 16yo boy in the soviet bloc at that time, it was a historic moment. There's no other drug like freedom. I love watching reactions to this, and how most of the people reacting don't even understand the significance of what they're watching at the moment. :D

To understand what the world was like in the 60`s+70`s+80`s.. These people were actually smuggling in tapes of Rock music into the USSR to get to listen to it at all !! , so for the ones recognizing the songs + standing in the "front pit" this was the moment of a life time!! ..and, Oh man ..I miss the concerts of the 80`s+90`s .. I saw Metallica in Stockholm, Sweden this year.. They were the sh.t back then.. !! Fun story.. My friend had been to the annual X-mas Dinner with his company before the show.. As a hard working guy starting his mornings really early, and With a little bit too much to drink, he was actaully asleep in his seat at row 4 close to the side of the stage when Metallica started to play approx. at 9pm.. ( Imagine the sound level.. lol ).. I can tell you , He woke up pretty fast .. We are still having a laugh at it today.. :D :D

This Monsters of Rock concert, where this is filmed, included sets by AC/DC, Metallica, The Black Crowes, Pantera, and E.S.T and took place at the Tushino Airfield in Moscow. The estimated crowd size is 1.6 million. 54 people died. The concert was free to all-comers. The U.S.S.R. did not allow rock concerts and frowned on Western music, so this was everyone's first concert ever. It took place about a month after the August military coup failed in the U.S.S.R. The U.S.S.R. was in the process of imploding and in three months from this concert would cease to exist. In my opinion, this is one of the finest wakes for any country ever. The rock gods played at the capital of the U.S.S.R. as it died.

This was one of the first opportunities that Russians had to hear Western music, live, in the modern era, they had just come out the other side of the darkness that is communism, the most oppressive form of government that mankind has ever developed, more than 100 million murdered (not including those who died in war, just the ones who were literally murdered by their own governments) in the 20th century (some 40 million in the former Soviet Union alone). If you were old enough to understand what was actually happening, when this concert took place, you can't help but to shed a few tears reliving these moments.

This concert was after the fall of the Iron Curtain & the end of USSR's communist regime over eastern Europe. Prior to this time, most of western music was outlawed. So for many of these people, it was their first time hearing this type of music other than what they could get on the black market or heard on underground radio. Metallica was part of this music festival called Monsters of Rock. Pantera & AC/DC were part of it also. It took place in September of that year at Tushino Airfield, a former site of Soviet military exercises. I got this concert on DVD for my husband for his b-day last year... Another great song by Metallica (same concert) is "Creeping Death" - crazy high energy & Kirk's guitar skills are beyond human. Many other KZbinrs have reacted to that one. It's a must see! Side note - I was 24 yrs old & living in Germany (US Army base - Karlsruhe) at the time of this concert. I think I actually heard all those Russians chanting "DIE! DIE! DIE!" with James Hetfield during the brief interlude of Creeping Death - LOL! :-D Just an FYI, Metallica is considered to be one of, if not THE best & biggest heavy metal band...They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2009. They've been at it for 40 years & they're still performing... Well, not now thanks to the pandemic, but they are still making music. Metallica & their groundbreaking music was the inspiration for many younger bands that came along after them & from different musical backgrounds. Enter Sandman was a big crossover hit & brought them into the mainstream audience. Their best stuff came from the early days. Their genius lyrics coupled with amazing musical skills, tackled many important social issues- drug addiction/alcoholism, depression/suicide, anti war/pro military, etc. Please check out some early hits like Master of puppets, Fade to Black, One, Nothing else matters, Sad but true... the list just goes on & on. :-)

The full dissolvement of communism was not until late December of 1991 and this show was in September of that year, the Berlin Wall was toppled a month after this show if that gives a reference. We were told attendance would be punished and were restricted to base and knew that is we went to Tushino air base we could face courts martial for failure to obey direct orders, this was while the USSR was still in existence but was dying.
