The only thing MJ had on Prince was sales, Live there was no comparison, MJ who i actually liked and saw live never changed his set and mimed so many times it's not even funny. Even when he did the superbowl halftime show he mimed for christ sakes. Prince always sang live and always kept it fresh and was a far superior live artist. When you talk about dancing MJ was fantastic for sure but when he got older in years he looked cringy trying to do the same dance moves and he just couldn't do it where Prince knew he couldn't do it anymore and adapted his style!!

I was 10 when Billy Jean came out, had the single, great. But Beat It already became a bit whiny. Then Prince appeared with Vanity and Appolonia; it defined my teenage years up to seeing the Lovesexy show in 1988 in Rotterdam etc. Meanwhile MJ returned with whiny songs like Bad, Dirty Diana, Leave Me Alone and all the creepy stuff with the kids and his messiah complex etc. MJ's music was only as good as his producers; Mizell Brothers, Quincy Jones, Teddy Riley, Rodney Jerkins, etc.

Personal opinion. I don't see how MJ can possibly stack up to people like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell & Neil Young considering the amount of classic material they put over decades-written by themselves, year after year, while MJ relied on others mostly & put one out every four years or longer. The Band's original run was pretty short-but their content overall destroys MJ's.

The difference between MJ and Prince is that MJs music was rooted in 60s and 70s soul/disco music. Don't forget MJ was just a little boy when he fronted the Jackson 5. Prince's sound , like many early 80s artists, didn't sound like anything before it. It was a fusion of funk, punk, R&B, and even rock. @@chica4530 - Disagree with your take: - They meant Michael's music was much "safer" than Prince's music so could more easily be consumed by the masses - Prince's lyrics were chock full of sexual imagery (sometimes explicitly so) as where Michael sang stuff like "the doggone girl is mine" and "we can sing songs of yesterday" while Prince was singing "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth".

Check out "Adore You" and "The Most Beautiful Girl" by Prince. He is a music genius. MJ and Prince each have their own lanes, but both were incredibly talented. However, Prince truly understood music -- he played just about every instrument.

As a teen in the 80s I loved both Michael Jackson and Prince equally. Michael was definitely more accessible and commercial, while Prince was more edgy and experimental. Having followed them all these years and looking back honestly, both were great performers and made great music, but Prince was more well rounded musically and definitely more prolific. The guy was a musical prodigy who, as you mentioned, could expertly play multiple instruments, along with mixing and arranging most of his own music. He even had a 5 octave range. Prince was just a musical phenom. Continue your journey discovering his music. There’s so much great stuff. You’ll be amazed.

The comparisons were made because in 1983, Thriller and Purple Rain were released at the same time with Michael having five of the top 10 songs on the charts and Prince had the other five. They were literally the only two artists you heard on the radio that year.

@@johnsonmark65 What are you talking about? When Thriller was released, it spent a record 300 weeks on the Billboard charts, with 37 weeks of that at Number One...because you don't seem to know anything, that's 25 straight years. Michael Jackson's single "Thriller" wasn't released as a single until the video of the song was released...in DECEMBER of 1983, which means it didn't become the smash hit cult classic it is now until....wait for it...1984, the same year Purple Rain was popular on the charts. Class dismissed.

I remember seeing Michael create the entire music in his head and then use a recorder to replicate the sounds he heard in his mind with beatbox before going to a studio (in the video of deposition in México), that was really cool to me. But I also know that prince was more talented in other areas, like instrumental, and his songs are more for adults (that in my opinion it really doesn't matter to what age a song is directed, while the song sounds good). But even so it is not fair to compare them, both made different types of music and both are legends

This song should be in a masterclass about producing. These days everything is covered up in autotune and bass drops. (Looking at you Kanye West...) And back then Prince had this monster hit with a song devoid of studio trickery and NO bass at all. Prince decided for this song that he wanted the arrangement as sparse as it possibly got, he removed almost all the instrumentation including the bass. The drums are a drum computer (yes, they were around in those days) which added to how cold the song sounded which again added to how raw and visceral the lyrics are.

I'm Team Prince all the way, and this is my fav track by him. I bought the Purple Rain album when it was released but sold/lost all my possessions in my later teens for various reasons. The whole album is well worth listening. I dont think theres a bad track on it. "Darling Nikki" is pure Prince and about as edgy as it gets. Incidentally, although a lifelong Prince fan i thought Tom Jones's cover of "Kiss" was actually better (I love all types of music. if its good its good.). Id love to see the lady's reaction to that if she like the Prince version (sorry first time to you channel i didnt catch any names).

The MJ and Prince rivalry was more of a press promoted thing. In real life they both had a friendly rivalry. MJ was PG friendly music (With 3 albums released in the 1980's)and Prince was your R rated music (the main reason we have explicit lyrics stickers on albums today) and Prince composed and released 9 albums in the 80's under his name, 3 albums under the Time name, 2 albums for Sheila E., 1 album for the Family, 4 other albums under other band monikers, all of his singles 1984 onward had an original song as the b-side, wrote and sometimes produced songs for (and sometimes with) Stevie Nicks, Patti Labelle, Sheena Easton, Kenny Rogers etc. Prince wrote his music (occasionally one of his musicians would contribute-but Prince was the main musically influence) played all of his instruments on his early music releases. MJ is a great performer, dancer, and singer. Prince is a great performer, musician, composer, singer, and a good dancer. MJ released 3 albums in the 1980's. Prince released 19 albums in the 1980's.

@@lieschenm1069 In comparison to Prince and Quincy Jones -MJ as a composer isn't even in the same classification. Even Billie Jean song riff came from a Hall & Oates song (which MJ asked if he could use.) Mj was good at building upon other music than creating music. I said MJ was a great performer, dancer, and singer (That means MJ is great at all those things.) You will note I sad Prince was a good dancer not a great dancer as MJ was. I merely stated facts (and some opinions) in my original statement-if you come to a conclusion that you don't like-that's on you.

@@lieschenm1069 The Jacksons 5 all the way up to The Jacksons then up to MJ solo career from all the singles an albums...from the 60s up until MJ passing...Jacksons library is enormous...own cartoons show, own tv show, performances on different tv shows, different commercials, videos, tours globe and so much more. MJ and Prince both on different levels. Both was great entertainers in their own way. Prince started with the music industry in the late 70s. Prince accomplished...great music career in his own way too. MJ fan base are children, young teens, young adults, older adults an elderly. Prince music had more sexually, vulgar, profanity an aggressive back in the days, which his fan base was definitely much different...grown folks. But that is what music brings different artists styles. I love both MJ and Prince both brings something different. Do real Research you will also find out that both was good friends and hung out together with their friend Lenny Kravitz. Lenny Kravitz was interviewed on KZbin. They were both exceptional in their own right. Michael became iconic. Iconic videos, choreographies and dance moves. Prince was a modern day mozart. He created, wrote, arranged, published, sang, danced, and was a multi-instrumentalist. Prince was in a unique league of his own and not many could perform live and be that animated on stage. Prince evolved over time. Doing music in his chosen genre based on where he was in life. Michael always wanted to give you the best performance, topping his previous one. IMHO there is no better than the other. Just exceptional in his own right. However, Prince could snatch any woman or man he wanted wearing his fashion, high heels, guyliner, perm and bedroom eyes.
