He was arguably the most important bassist of all time…and he was active for less than 5 years. He wrote everything and died in his mid 20s. That’s just…so incredibly mind blowing and overwhelmingly sad. Almost 40 years later, and people are STILL picking up bass because of what he managed to do in those few short years. We’ll never forget him…he’s still dearly missed. Rest In Peace Cliff.

I personally like all members of Metallica, the only thing that I don’t like about them is how badly they treated Jason after Cliff’s passing. But yes they absolutely did many spectacular live shows after Cliff’s passing. No one could ever replace Cliff, but Jason did bring a lot to the table especially with live shows during his time in Metallica.

I was first introduced to Metallica in August of 1986 by Mark French, and knew I was experiencing magnificent. I never heard a bassist that comes close to Cliff's brand of genius. The hardest part is that we were planning to see them that year, but Cliff died in September. We were all devastated. Although we manage to see the Damaged Justice tour Hammersmith Odeon in 1988, it would have been a blessing to see that Bass God play. R.I.P. Cliff... see you soon, brother.

Could have been? Are you serious bro? Metallica is the best Rock Band in the world and of all times. And I say Rock because Metal is part of Rock... What you said is like saying... Ohh Imagine how great Eminem could have been if he would still be named Slim Shady. Cliff was one of the greatest bass players of all times, but you're disregarding the great work that Jason Newsted and Rob Trujillo have done and still does (Rob's case)... Don't forget that the biggest albuns came after Cliff's death. But I can agree if you say that Metallica only came this far because they had Cliff at the early stages of the band because James knows nothing about music (well, you know what I mean, he learned throughout his career... Cliff teached him how to compose harmonics and other stuff, etc) and Lars sure knows about drums but that's it.

Eddy Parera They are still good, but after Cliff died they lost something. Jason Newsted is a great bassist, but he was useless in Metallica (compare his playing on Metallica albums to his playing on Flotsam and Jetsam's "Doomsday for the deceiver"). Robert is great and I hope that Hardwired to self destruct will be good. And I don't think Load, ReLoad or St. Anger (fuck this shit) were their biggest records. Black Album was, but it's not as good as Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. And I wouldn't say Metallica is the best rock band of all time (I like Black Sabbath more), but that's an opinion.

It make me wonder what would've happened when the black album turned up or even AJFA? Cliff drew a line in the sand and would not cross it. He would've never let them wear makeup, cut their hair, try for mainstream success. It is really intriguing to think some of the music that would've kept coming from the group with him.
@motfcu
@motfcu 8 жыл бұрын
First of all, Jason didn't play a big part in Metallica as James didn't let him have much influence on the band (he almost composed nothing except a few songs) and that is why he left the band. They didn't make the same mistake with Trujillo fortunately. Secondly, no, metal isn't part of rock. If it was so then Rock would be part of Blues and Blues would be part of African Music. Metal takes its roots in Rock but took its distance by using structures from classical music. And if I had to be picky, I would say Metal comes from Hard Rock which is pretty much different that standard Rock. And Finally : Cliff was one of the main composer and inspiration of the band. With his death you can clearly see how the band changed his style. So yeah his survival would have make Metallica very different.

I’ve watched this over 100 times easy. Cliff’s whole look, the hair, and the insane way he rocked that bass, are a few clues as to his genius ability. It’s gut wrenching to think he was taken too soon. Those fans watching are f’in lucky.

I saw them on March 4th, 1985 in a small 500 seat club in Colorado Springs. My 15th birthday. It was an all ages show. Seeing them becoming (arguably) the biggest band in the world still blows my mind. None of us early Metallica fans could ever have imagined that.

Cliff is basically the Jimi Hendrix of bass Edit: ok how tf did this get so many likes. By all means I know this is a controversial topic but think about it, I know other bass players can take the spot like Les Claypool, Geezer Butler, Victor Wooten, and Steve Harris but fr, you don't have to agree with me but I choose Cliff as one of if not the greatest bass player and he should deserve to be the Jimi Hendrix of Bass
