What I will say is there is a lot of black folk listening to rock music on here, and a lot of older white males who react to hip hop. I like the reactions of people discovering genres of music they’re not necessarily familiar with, there is something somewhat addictive about watching people learn and discover new music.

Although many Metallica fans would disagree but I think Ride the Lightening is their best album. I got it back in 84 when it was released and was my first TRUE metal record and was in love instantly. Creeping Death, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fight Fire With Fire, Trapped Under Ice, Fade To Black and Call of Ktulu are songs I could listen to over and over without getting sick of them.

What you're probably hearing is the fact that a lot of rock and metal songs are in a minor key. If I remember correctly, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is in Em. Minor keys bring out a feeling of dread and people have been using that particular trick since the Classical days.

That's why I listen to rock/metal. The instrumentation gets me. I barely pay attention to the lyrics. I love "For Whom the Bell Tolls" because the riffs and drums feel so heavy. Great reaction ! The lyrics actually refer to the singer labeling the ones who controlled his religious thoughts and actions (his parents, and their church) Unforgiven for not allowing him to express his true self and truly be the human being he was potentially meant to be. If you know the history of the lead singer, James Hetfield's childhood, then this song becomes even that much more powerful.

When Black Sabbath first began what we now call the heavy metal genre, they were partially inspired by seeing people leaving the cinema after watching horror movies (they were also inspired by their dreary, post-war, industrial surroundings). They asked themselves, why is it that people pay to be scared at the movies? Then they decided that they would write music that scares people just like horror movies. This is probably why you get a horror movie vibe when you hear metal.

In case you were unaware, on the intro to For Whom The Bells, the high pitched riff you hear from 8 seconds in is actually a Bass Guitar instead of a Electric Guitar. A lot of people won't pick up on this, since the Bass Guitar usually occupies the lower end of the sound spectrum, but Cliff Burton plays that intro on the higher end for a unique sound.

I had friends that were into Metallica when we were in 7th grade when Injustice for All came out. It wasn't until the Black album came out was when I started to like their music. I like all their albums. I think their Garage Works album is way under rated. I think the reason for that is because that whole album is cover music. They took the classic Whiskey in the Jar by Thin Lizzy and gave it new life in that album.

In a relatively recent interview, Lars & James admitted that the song "Enter Sandman" originally began as a one about crib death but decided that was too dark & disturbing for large-scale marketing so they adapted the lyrics to represent childhood nightmares instead.
