Ive never been more depressed and hopeless in my life than I am right now. Every day I hope for a change and things only seem to get worse. This song has brought me to tears so, so many times, including now. It may seem like a sad song to some, but when you’re really down and out, sometimes knowing that you’re not alone in your pain is enough to brighten things up just a little bit. Thank you James for sharing your pain. I don’t feel like Atlas with the weight of the world on top of me today. Update: 4th July ‘23 💪🏼🇺🇸 Hey everyone! I’m good, and getting better every day. A little bit of backstory, I was addicted to opioids for years after breaking three vertebrae in a skiing accident about 10 years ago. I was a functioning guy but because of the medication reliance and eventual abuse, my time horizon consisted of 24 hours. Go to work, get home, get high repeat. It took me a few months to recover from paralysis, yet was paralyzed for years by the drugs. I’ve always been a very open and truthful person, but like James said, I would confess all to the alleyway but lie straight to the mirror. I was waiting for my life to change and not doing anything to change it. I was treading water. I made a lot of mistakes in my life and never forgive myself for any of them. Through some intensive self guided therapy with psilocybin mushrooms, I gained a perspective on my life at 38 years old that was incredibly illuminating. I realized that I do love myself, but Through childhood trauma etc., I was trained to do the opposite, hate myself. And so that’s how I lived. A notification popped up about one of your comments and yesterday I listened to this song while riding my motorcycle and listen to it on repeat five times in a row. Crying the whole time. As James sang, “forgive me!”… and I did. I said I’m sorry to myself, and forgave myself, out loud, in the helmet, while in traffic (thank goodness for tinted visors 😅). I’m fighting for myself every day now, I meditate on gratitudes I have and things to be proud of. I still have my ups and downs but the best part about rock bottom is that it can only get better. If anyone is reading this that is struggling with addiction, depression, you have to try. It’s heartbreaking at first to try and feel no results, but you have to stick with it. It may not be the first day, or the first week, but eventually things will start getting better if you work at it. And then every day just keeps getting better and better. I love you all! Thanks for sharing the positivity and concern. ϟkål!

2 years ago I met a group of homeless men. I was so sheltered I didn’t even realize there were people actually living on the streets in my town. They opened my eyes an my heart. Each one of them had a story. I came to love each and every one of them. No matter how much I loved them, how much I cared, how much I helped...everyone of them chose their addiction. I miss them every day. To the ones lost....Viking Mike and Patrick...Rest in peace. And those who have demons I don’t understand but would still open my door to...Wolf, Greg, Tweety, Tim, I pray everyday that you will see you are loved so much.

A lot if people are one medical emergency, job loss, etc away from seeing themselves in the same situation. It doesn't help to have people who assume the worst, because you happen to be homeless.

This song touches on multiple subjects including addiction, homelessness and forgiveness but primarily conveys a sense of regret. The protagonist desires forgiveness not only for what he has done but what he knows he will continue to do. My eyes seek reality (He tries to see the truth) My fingers seek my veins (He feels for his veins, so he can stick himself with a needle) There's a dog at your back step, He must come in from the rain (He tries to find shelter from the harsh conditions he finds himself in I fall 'cause I let go (He gives up) The net below has rot away (Nothing/no-one is there to catch him as he falls, all his chances are up) The trash fire is warm (The only comfort he has is that of a trash fire giving him heat and light) No one's safe from the storm (No-one is safe from the effects of drugs) And I can't bare to see, What I've let me be, So wicked and worn (He himself does not know who he has become and shows fatigue from the abuse of drugs) So as I write to you (He is writing the suicide note/letter) What is done and to do (What he has done in his life, and what he is going to do to end it) Maybe you'll understand (Understand all the pain he has been through) And won't cry for this man, 'cause low man is due (He is not worth your tears) Please forgive me (Self explanatory really, he wants forgiveness) Touch clean with a dirty hand (He is cleaning the needle) I touched the clean to the waste (Injects the “clean” needle into his “wasted” skin) So low the sky is all I see (He is in his grave looking up) So you bring this poor dog in from the rain, Though he just wants right back out again (You can give him shelter and put him in rehab, but he just wants to get back out there and look for his next fix) And I cry, to the alley way, Confess all to the rain (With no other shelter, he rests in an alleyway and confesses his sins in the form of the note/letter) But I lie, lie straight to the mirror (He even lies to himself that everything will be alright) One I've broken, to match my face (His abuse of drugs has taken its toll physically)

Back in 1996, Metallica took a massive chance that would see them look and sound ultimately different. Songs such as this and Mama Said were so risky that even a lot of music industry insiders must've thought that Metallica was off of their collective rockers for having songs like these on Load. However, although Metallica cut their hair, & put on pimp suits, the lyrics in their songs still had an unbelievably sharp edge to them. As Led Zeppelin said:'The song remains the same"! I commend Metallica for taking such a risk. This is an excellent song!!!

This song is about accepting one's true nature. It combats the popular religious belief that you can be forgiven by confessing your sins. You can apologize to others for who you are, but that's not the same as forgiving yourself. You'll always be tied to what you've done and at the end of the day if you feel like you're not a good person, then the only resolution is to attempt to change your nature. Yet, you're trapped forever in your own mind with the memories of what you've done in your life. If you have corrupted and harmed other human beings, then it's difficult to feel like you really deserve forgiveness. If you can't look at yourself and say that you've lived your life the right way or treated people well, then how will you ever feel like you're deserving of the good that life has to offer?

Sloppy Joe You can't say Master of Puppets had shitty lyrics. One of their heaviest songs with lyrics that is talking against conformity. Just because lyrics don't have some kind of self enlightenment meaning behind it don't mean they aren't good. Most of Metallica's faster, heavier shit usually had lyrical subjects on War, Religion, Insanity etc, just because you don't like the subject matter, or just can't interpret the lyrics, does not mean the lyrics are bad. You just don't understand or relate with them is all.

This song always made me move so much that I always end up in tears listening to it as a lonely introvert teenage guy who had no friends at all. This song's lyrics are so deep yet it's surprising to me most people couldnt undeestand the meaning of these lyrics. "And I cry, to the alleyway, Confessed all to the rain. But I lie, lie straight to the mirror, The one I broke, to match my face". It's a low man's lyric. A person who the society has rejected. Because he is not like them. He is an ugly low life. He dared to dream and touched the clean, with his dirty hands...but realizes that he touched the clean to the waste. His eyes seek reality and the reality is that he will remain a low man. So he is contemplating suicide, please forgive him for his deeds as he dreamt to love and be loved like everyone else. This is a song written by James for all people who are depressed and left alone by the world. A hugely underrated song with masterpiece lyrics.

Gone down from a 120 Kilogram to 69 kilogram at 1 meter 86 centimeters... I am a healthy 110 kilograms now and got my strength back...

Don't know how many people understand the full context of the song. It's about the homeless and how many of them are drug addicted and so broken. Their eyes are seeking reality but at the same time while they want to get clean and get right their fingers seek the veins because the addiction is so strong and they feel dirty because of it to the point where even while begging for forgiveness, the soul of the low man says not to mourn his passing because he has been doing it for so long that he was due to be released from this mortal coil and no longer suffer. Having worked with homeless shelters during my teenage years and seeing a lot of this first hand, this song still has an incredible impact on me to this day. It is an absolutely amazing song.

That Dog is an Allusion to his drug addiction, just like an addict, no matter how often you get into rehab, they return to drugs.

I've been told that I'm going to have to stop a sport I love, I've lost the girl I cherish dearly while she didn't feel the same all In one summer. And no matter what I do, I know I'm going to not be able to see friends I cherish again for a long time. But it's good to always know that your not the only person hurt. Thank you James Hatfield and thank you Metallica. I hope my children will love your music as I do now.

As an artist as great Mztallica you influence people. So you have to be careful when you are the unknown Hero Of Day. Word is sharper than swords. Thx. YOU ROCK

A great lonesome heroic poignacy theme and depiction taken from a movie's scene (ending part).. an addict's dying scene in a samall wooden barack on a rainy evening.. His dog irritated by the storm barking into the outside and the homeless man is back from saving the aloof-sought beauty protected and he's wounded, is to sooth himself by drug or he's loosing blood.. He that evenin saved her from death or a dangerous bebing begot.. and she is not aware it was her acquinted very "low man". That's really a lyric as-with..

A lot of Metallica songs would fit well in movie scenes. Like Bleeding Me to me would fit in a scene where a guy visits his parents grave.

wondrous song. I was a teenager in 1995, I liked 'the memory remains' etc. Now as an old 39yr old man, as a delusionary ;) man, reflecting on the musical merit of metallica, this song stands out very much for re-load, a wonderfull song. ' Than yo bring this poor dog in from the rain' is f*knen epic.

i think this song is about him asking GOD to forgive him. Notice how in the beginning his finger were feeling for his vein (life) and later on it turns from veins to faith. He is saying pretty much how he doesnt understand why certain things happen but he just wants GODS forgiveness. just my 2 cents.
@AidanMurray17 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree with that statement but the way the lyrics go, i think is he is comparing himself to a homeless person as if he is lacking faith.
@shereetard7 жыл бұрын
Chris Hendrickson , he is feeling the vein because he is about to shoot up... his addiction leads to homelessness and although he hopes to get himself straight he can’t beat his addiction and and resigns to the fact that this will end up killing him.

I think the load/reload metallica is lost to us born between 81-84. I cant stop crying remembering this shit. We were all mad then cause they weren't metal anymore, but little did we know they went beyond that and simply didn't come back. I guess thats life. So young then, didn't realize the impact.
