James Hetfield (at least at the time of making the Black Album and prior) was not a professionally trained singer by any means. This isn't knocking him but he was a guitarist/instrumentalist first and foremost, and really was only a singer because the band couldn't find one initially. He is a really good singer though.

Found this song during a very hard time in my life. I just felt so numb like nothing else mattered. It was a sad hopeless numbness, this video specifically helped me a lot, it comforted me alot. I remember sitting at the terrace looking at the birds in the blue sky flying while playing this song in the background on loop. I love this song since. It's like that specific memory, those strong emotions I was feeling, the wind, the smell, every moment, so vividly is somehow trapped in this cover. It's insane. Whenever I come back to this video I feel that numbness all over again tho I am in a better place now, it just reminds me a lot of that time and the comfort I felt listening to this song. I grew to love this song and this cover.

So close, no matter how far Couldn't be much more from the heart Forever trusting who we are And nothing else matters Never opened myself this way Life is ours, we live it our way All these words I don't just say And nothing else matters Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us something new Open mind for a different view And nothing else matters Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know But I know So close, no matter how far Couldn't be much more from the heart Forever trusting who we are And nothing else matters Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know But I know I never opened myself this way Life is ours, we live it our way All these words I don't just say And nothing else matters Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us, something new Open mind for a different view And nothing else matters Never cared for what they say Never cared for games they play Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know And I know, yeah! So close, no matter how far Couldn't be much more from the heart Forever trusting who we are No, nothing else matters

Told my woman today I should have this down in a year or so. This is the first song I've actually taught myself and I refuse to give up on it. Arguably the best ever written.
