I think you all need to realize something, Lars Ulrich is maybe the only Drummer in Rock/Metal that doesn't really give a shit about his drums skills... He said it himself, he admitted he's not that good but Ulrich has others to offer that drumming, he composed like half of Metallica's music with Hetfield, he's a skilled business man, he speaks for the band and other things... I think you should stop having such high expectations about him... I think he could do some efforts too but still... He's just a human being... All that hate is pure nonsense... Also he fully lives the life he wanted and he's happy about it...
@avocate20178 жыл бұрын
+thejoosty1 Agreed. I don't understand all the hate, either. I don't think he's one of the greatest drummers out there, but neither does he. His drumming is what it is, and it has worked for the band. He doesn't have to play at the level of someone like Neil Peart (whom he mentions here) and be virtuoso drummer to be in a successful rock band. As he says in this interview, he just wanted to play the drums when he was younger and wasn't necessarily goal-oriented.

For those bashing Lars, take it from this perspective. No one ever said you had to be this level of greatness or had to play this set of rudiments and beats to become a professional. Being a professional means you fit the band/music well and that you get along with the other musicians. If I was presented with two drummers, one who feels the music and grooves, the other who has the flashiest fills and very complex, I'd probably pick the first guy who grooves. Yes, all drummers have some flash somewhere in their tool box, but look at the most famous and popular drummers of all time. What do they have in common? They groove very well, fit within the pocket, and get along with the other musicians greatly. That, to me at least, is a great drummer.

Any drummer who knows what he’s doing knows how good Lars is. And knowing what you’re doing has nothing to do with technical ability. But actual drumming. Being the groove. Being the beat. He’s one of the best metal drummers of all time. You know why? Because you will never listen to a Metallica song and say “oh wow there’s Lars”. He seamlessly blends into the sound. He’s always perfectly servicing the song. Metal always sounds best in its most simplest form. He’s no technical god. But he’s a great drummer & composer. He writes these songs. He clearly knows how to drum to them. His bank account says so.
@hamachibeans44713 жыл бұрын
I was looking for this comment, it always irks me when people shit on Lars (so I’m irked often), even when they try and defend him by saying “he writes all the songs and is a great manager” which is also true, but it’s like you said, his drumming is one with the songs and while not being technically outstanding it still is really great to me so I don’t even care what other people think because I think drumming isn’t meant to be a main focus of Metallica, and for that Lars is perfect and no greater drummer is really even required in my eyes, he provides exactly what is needed so I don’t see the issue
@tahoekid75483 жыл бұрын

Word on the street is that Lars is actually the funnest member of the band to hang with. This from some friends who have played a show or two with Metallica. Lars is the only one who will party with the younger bands and keep the party Rollin'. So much in fact that he reportedly becomes a bizarre drunken mess, prone to inappropriate comments and uncomfortable behavior.

I find it ironic, because let's face it, he does kinda suck now. Totally different drummer than he used to be. Seems like it's difficult for him to execute fairly simple beats alot of the time. But perhaps his partying is one reason why he sucks now.

This definitely makes sense because Kirk and James both had substance abuse problems. So them not going out and partying is probably for the best.

Laugh at me if you want, i love his playing, and my fav is Neil. Im also a drummer. Lars has a Brilliant way of structuring a song. He has made more money than just about every drummer not named ringo. Hes filthy rich for a reason. Hes sold more albums than any other heavy metal band in history. So make fun all you want, i love his drumming because its original and you can tell when its him on the kit.

I had the chance to do a meet and greet with Lars here in Las Vegas (outside of an Einstein Bros. of all places) and he couldn't've been cooler. Granted he's my inspiration to pick up a pair of sticks as well as playing heavy music so this whole situation was cast in a rose-colored lens but looking back now, I still feel the same way and can honestly say he's a genuine dude. Very personable, easy to talk to and extremely nice. Thank you Lars Ulrich for doing what you do and thank you Metallica for making an obscure meet and greet possible.

People gripe about Ulrich's skills which is quite callow. Tell you what, someone like Neal Peart wouldn't sound right with the style of Metallica with all the extra tinkering on every piece on the drum set. It would simply be too much and wouldn't fit the objective of loud drums as being central to Metallica. Ulrich's raw skills fit very well with Metallica's sound and style.
@jackfrost188910 жыл бұрын
That's a very diplomatic way of saying Lars sucks. Lol Put Neil Peart in ANY band, and that band will sound better. Why? Because Neil Peart can actually play his instrument. Lars can't.
@Mister2You10 жыл бұрын
Jack Frost You fail to understand differing genres of rock and drumming styles that complement and fit those genres. Peart's style works great with Rush where he can tinker and add many differing techniques just as the band does with their synthesizers as well. The drumming matches that. This wouldn't fit in with Metallica's sound. In other words Peart would have to change his style with them just as he'd have to change his style with say Led Zeppelin. If he brought the way he drummed with Rush to either of those bands it would not fit.
@Mister2You10 жыл бұрын
***** Exactly.

He has apparently gotten super sloppy and isn't a good drummer anymore or at least not as good as he use to be (I'm a guitar player and I don't know enough to back that point with evidence, it's just what i've seen said about him). That's about it really. Oh and the fact that a lot of videos with Lars where he's talking, he is eating. It's the most infuriating and annoying thing ever.

It's always interesting to see artists in sit down interviews like this. They seem so different from their on stage persona most of the time. When the band is on stage and the volume is cranked they seem one way but then you see this and think man they are just like anyone else really. Like you could just have a conversation with them and you wouldn't think twice about it if you had no idea who they were. I like how some of the biggest names in rock/metal seem so down to earth when you take away the instruments.

Wow this was MUCH better than I expected. Well worth the full listen. Also I like how tactful Lars was in avoiding using the obvious phrase when he said “we love that people still care, and that... (we’re still relevant)”. Instead he said something like “and that... there are even those that call us borderline relevant, still.” Honestly I should’ve gone back to find his exact words, but you’ll have to either listen yourself or trust me when I say he said it in a sincerely humble way. You can tell he’s fully aware of the potential faux pas of a 30+ year old band declaring themselves “still relevant”, yet he obviously has a right to his due credit considering how huge the Metallica fan base still is today. He threaded that needle perfectly.

About half of Metallica's riffs and lyrics are derived from Ulrich, the other half from Hetfield. He's obviously not the most technical or talented metal drummer but he is a genius at structuring songs. If you watch behind the scenes videos from the making of their albums, he and Hetfield are always working hard to get it right. They are both perfectionists which is why they always have crisp riffs, transitions, intros and outros. Of course they've have had their flaws, what band hasn't? But I've always appreciated their attention to detail, coming from a long time musician.

Lars has perfect complimentary taste for the riffs, song writing and accents the vocals . Every song that Metallica does has personality to it and tells a story. He makes people dance, headbang, sing along with his drumming. And not to mention the ((SOUND)) and production of his drums on almost every album is legendary! A band needs to do many things other than rehearsing and playing. Everyone must care for the other's playing when creating your own song. You need manager, logistic and so on. When it came to how you get your band to be successful, Lars is the example.
