"Whiskey in the Jar" (Roud 533) is an Irish traditional song set in the southern mountains of Ireland, often with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry. The song, about a rapparee (highwayman) who is betrayed by his wife or lover, is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs and has been recorded by numerous artists since the 1950s. The song first gained wide exposure when Irish folk band The Dubliners performed it internationally as a signature song, and recorded it on three albums in the 1960s. In the U.S., the song was popularized by The Highwaymen, who recorded it on their 1962 album Encore.[1] Irish rock band Thin Lizzy hit the Irish and British pop charts with the song in 1973. In 1990, The Dubliners re-recorded the song with The Pogues with a faster rocky version charting at No. 63 in the UK. American metal band Metallica in 1998 played a version very similar to that of Thin Lizzy's, though with a heavier sound, winning a Grammy for the song in 2000 for Best Hard Rock Performance. In 2019, Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams performed a cover of the song on his album Shine a Light.

Metallica is one of my three favourite bands and of course number 1 !!! The others are S.O.A.D. and Rammstein. I saw Metallica the first time in 1984. Damned time is running and I am almost 60 and still a metal head 🤘🤘🤘 This guys are awesome and many of their songs are timeless. They overcome many rocks on their metal path and they are still playing...What could be better... Love you guys. Stay all healthy and safe and love and hugs from Germany Daniela 😘🤘😘🤘😘

gotta give em a lot of credit...their style nor their sound ever changed. still as cool now, if not moreso, as 1987. I really admire how they've all kept themselves in fairly good physical shape as well. Kudos Metallica!!!

Metallica is pure magic. So melodious yet heavy unlike so many modern metal bands who just tune lower and lower and create doggy metal so that only dogs could hear those notes. Every fuckin Metallica riff is crisp and clear and the notes could be picked out.

For those interested, Whiskey in the Jar is originally an old 80 year old Irish folk song (Cork and Kerry mountains) famously covered by Thin Lizzy and the Dubliners before my personal favourite cover, Metallica.

When you hear the drums and Bass guitar you know what song it is, One time I went to a Metallica concert and I heard The drums and bass I was like "What? Did they make a new song." And after 10 seconds I hear the beginning of "Whisky in the jar", Everyone freaking out and started fighting to get to the front, Even some tried hopping the fence, But that was the best concerts I been to!

My name is Molly when James sings this song. 🔥. He’s aged like fine wine 🍷. Gets hotter with every song. (14 years sober) Saw them in Louisville back in 89. General Admission, Mosh pits and weed. Smoking was just starting to get banned during concerts. Every 15 minutes the mosh pit moved outside for a smoke.🔥😉
