This song is hundreds of years old, going back to the pirate days. It’s an old Irish folk song that’s been covered countless times, about a bandit that steals money from Captain Farrell, brings it to his girlfriend, then gets betrayed by her and ends up killing the good ol’ Captain and going to prison. There are different versions, in one it’s Captain Pepper and the girl’s name is Jenny. Metallica covered Thin Lizzy’s version, but punched it up a bit. Enjoying you guys, keep it up! Dig back to some older RUSH, like Anthem, By-tor and the snow dog or the Necromancer, heavy shit! Brad’s head will explode! 😁

'Whiskey in the jar' was a traditional Irish drinking song... Thin Lizzy recorded a rock version of the song in the early 70's. Metallica opted to cover Thin Lizzy for their covers record 'Garage Inc.' in 1998, cos late bassist Cliff Burton was a huge fan of the band and their bassist/vocalist Phil Lynott... Tragically, Phil Lynott and Cliff Burton both passed away in 1986, just months apart...

I tipped a Superchat for them to react to the Thin Lizzy version, hopefully they do it. The Thin Lizzy version is beautiful, but this version has lost the poetic vibe --and Metallica certainly has some poetic songs. They failed here imo. Just an opinion.

I know its an Irish folk song which they have covered and many others cover, but must say the Lizzy version is IMHO a true classic and I'll always think of them first when I hear any version of it. The point is that this song they are reacting to was played as a tribute Thin Lizzy and more specifically to Phil Lynton, RIP, the lead singer of Thin Lizzy. Metallica have stated how they were greatly influenced by artists like Phil and Thin Lizzy. Them playing this song in Ireland was a nice touch, a nice way to show the respect and asteem they hold Phil in.

My day started at 5am , unloading trucks and putting the show together. We get cut loose until after the show around 4:30 that afternoon. I went and grabbed food and immediately got in line waiting for doors to the venue to open up. I caught 3 guitar picks that night , then had to go tear down the show and load trucks to send them on their way to next gig. Made for a very long day for me , but what a fun night

Garage Inc. is a compilation album of cover songs by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on November 24, 1998, through Elektra Records. It includes cover songs, B-side covers, and The $5.98 E.P. - Garage Days Re-Revisited, which had gone out of print since its original release in 1987. The title is a combination of Garage Days Revisited and Metallica's song "Damage, Inc.", from Master of Puppets. The album's graphical cover draws heavily from the 1987 EP. The album features songs by artists that have influenced Metallica, including many bands from the new wave of British heavy metal movement, hardcore punk bands and popular songs.

Whilst I like Thin Lizzy's version better, in fact it's probably my favourite version - there is nothing bad or wrong with Metallica's version, to be utterly clear - actually the song predates even Thin Lizzy. By a lot. Musicologist and historian Alan Lomax traced the origins of "Whiskey In The Jar" to 17th century Ireland. Which would make sense because Phil Lynott was raised in Dublin, Ireland. He would almost certainly have been familiar with the song as a folk ballad sung down the pub on a Saturday night.

This is a cover of an old Irish drinking song that was also done by Thin Lizzy. I've seen Metallica live in ever decade of their existence. They never fail to deliver.

"Whisky In The Jar" is a cover from "Thin Lizzy" (< I prefer this version), but Metallica made with "Garage Inc" a whole cover-album. Check out their version of "Stone Cold Crazy" by Queen! :-)

This is an old old poem. Like maybe back to 1650. The details change over the years. Guy robs someone (a cop, a soldier, etc), gives the money to the wife/girlfriend, then she betrays him (sometimes taking his ammo which gets him killed, sometimes not which gets the cop/soldier killed and him jailed.

It’s about a highwayman who gets betrayed to English soldiers by his girl. It’s a old folk song. It was revived by the Dubliners in the 1960s and then turned into a rock song by Thin Lizzy in the 1970s. This is a cover of that version. This is at Slane Castle, a natural amphitheatre in front of a castle. It’s hosted everyone from Bob Dylan to U2 to REM to Guns’n’Roses.

This is based on the Irish folk song which has been around for hundred of years and the lyrics tend to change, my definitive version has seven verses, 1) the robbing of a Captain/Colonel Farrell or Pepper, 2) taking the money back to Jenny or Molly, I prefer Jenny because it rhymes with "made a pretty penny", 3) going to bed and being betrayed by Jenny, 4) being captured in the ambush set up by Jenny, 5) escaping prison, 6) seeking out the aid of his brother in the army, 7) a closing verse discussing his love for getting drunk and pretty women. Metallica's and Thin Lizzy's version has the protagonist in verse 4 shoot the people trying to arrest him rather than Jenny having filled his pistol barrels with water so that he would be taken without violence, their version then picks up with verse 7 except instead of the protagonist having liberated himself from the prison, his is stuck there to rot.

The best thing about Metallica is they never sold out, despite what people might say. They have always said that they will make the music they want to make and play what they want to play. And if you don't like it, you don't have to listen to it. The albums Load and Reload are great examples of that!

Though a bit over dramatized or theatrical, Brad you should watch "Into the Never" Imax movie release. It touches a little into their concert performances, but you get to see a little bit of mutual release and feeding of energy between the band and the crowd.
