On this video we are watching and reacting to the trailer of Assassin's Creed Shadows. This trailer has created a lot of controversy and backlash with people attacking and insulting each other over the protagonist being a Black African man. What is the real history about this? Let's talk about it.

Many people are getting really upset about this game, particularly in Japan as Japanese gamers are feeling left out when compared to previous Assassin's Creed games which always features a protagonist from the same are as the setting.
Even though these feeling as absolutely justified, it's also important to not overswing and reach incorrect conclusions such as some people mentioning that there was never a Black African man in Feudal Japan, which is historically incorrect.
Let's talk about Yasuke, let's watch the trailer and see if the way they represented him in this game is in any way coherent with the historical record and most importantly let's ask the hardest question of all...Was Yasuke a samurai?
然に彼黒坊被成御扶持、名をハ号弥助と、さや巻之のし付幷私宅等迄被仰付、依時御道具なともたさせられ候、
This black man called Yasuke was given a stipend, a private residence, etc., and was given a short sword with a decorative sheath. He is sometimes seen in the role of weapon bearer.
Shiba Yoshikane in 1553 - son of the previous and soon to be the next de jure lord of Owari, before Nobunaga ran him out of town.
若武衛様は川狩より直にゆかたひらのあたてにて信長を御憑み候て那古野へ御出すなはち貳百人扶持被仰付天王坊に置申され候
Lord Buei the Younger fled directly from his fishing spot on the river to Nagoya, dressed only in a bathrobe, to call on Nobunaga’s help. Accordingly, Nobunaga assigned him a stipend sufficient to maintain a retinue of two hundred men and installed him in the Tennōbō temple.
Saitō Dōsan. Recent research suggest this story is inaccurate, but I’m just demonstrating how Ōta Gyūichi uses the word.
斎藤山城道三は元來山城國西岡の松波と云者也一年下國候て美濃國長井藤左衛門を憑み扶持を請余力をも付られ候
The original family name of Saitō Yamashiro Dōsan was Matsunami. He was a native of the Western Hills of Yamashiro Province. One year, he left the Kyoto area for the provinces and called on the help of Nagai Tōzaemon of Mino, who granted him a stipend and assigned auxiliaries to him.
Nobunaga remonstrating Ashikaga Yoshiaki in 1573 for not giving out stipend properly.
一 諸侯の衆方々御届申忠節無踈略輩には似相の御恩賞不被宛行今々の指者にもあらさるには被加御扶持候さ樣に候ては忠不忠も不入に罷成候諸人のおもはく不可然事
Item [3] You have failed to make appropriate awards to a number of lords who have attended you faithfully and have never been remiss in their loyal service to you. Instead, you have awarded stipends to newcomers with nothing much to their credit. That being so, the distinction between loyal and disloyal becomes irrelevant. In people’s opinion, this is improper.
...
Item [7] Men who have given you steadfast and blameless service but have not been awarded a stipend by you find themselves in dire need in Kyoto. They turned to Nobunaga with a heavy heart. If I were to say a few words in their behalf, they assumed, then surely you would take pity on them. On the one hand, I felt sorry for them; on the other, I thought it would be in the interest of the public authority (kōgi no ontame; sc., to your benefit). So I put the matter of their stipends before you, but you did not assent in even one case. Your hard-heartedness, excessive as it is, puts me out of countenance before these men. I refer to the likes of Kanze Yozaemon [Kunihiro], Furuta Kahyōe, and Ueno Kii no Kami [Hidetame].
Nobunaga to his own "companions" (think of Alexander’s foot and horse companions) in 1575 because he was feeling generous that day and had just given a bunch of cloth to a beggar and then felt like also rewarding his men who were supposedly moved to tears by the former act of generosity.
御伴之上下皆落淚也御伴衆何れも々々被加御扶持難有仕合無申計樣体也如此御慈悲深き故に諸天の有御冥利而御家門長久にに御座候と感申也
All of Nobunaga’s companions, those of high as of low rank, also shed tears. Each and every one of his companions had his stipend increased, and it goes without saying that they felt fortunate and thankful. It is because Nobunaga was so compassionate, everyone felt, that the heavens shed their blessings upon him and that the fortunes of his house would long endure.

The crazy thing is - they DO their research. Ubisofts teams for historic research know what they are doing. The problem is that they dont decide what gets into the game. Another example would be the Netflix series Barbarians, where the historic advisers quit in the making of Season 2 because it infuriated them so much how hard they were ignored and how much bs the directors threw into it anyway, against any advice. I wouldnt be surprised if many people left since the early years of AC, but i dont doubt it that they still KNOW what is correct and what not. Inserting agendas and slobbering investors coqs just has a higher priority, especially after "Vikings: The Game" was so successful.

My favorite story about a Kunoichi based out of Kyoto who snuck into a regional warlord's local holdings disguised as a washerwoman. She then found the room of records and "cooked the books", and stole a small amount of gold each time. After a couple years of this she (or someone) sent a message to the Shogun that the regional warlord was skimming taxes. When the Shogun audited the local warlord, they found it to be "true", and the regional warlord was publicly beheaded for treason. I learned this story when visiting a museum on "ninja history" (and they openly admitted there was only so much they could know). They made a huge emphasis on the fact that although many shinobi were assassins, some of them specialized in using and manipulating the legal system to do the assassination for them. Even if the story isn't true per se, it was meant to convey the idea that the shinobi engaged in all kinds of complex statefare, espionage, book-keeping, eco terrorism... anything to complete their goals.

As someone mentioned, one way might be to omit the Japanese woman from the main character; UBI chose Yasuke instead of the Japanese samurai because he could not relate to the Japanese (a statement made in a deleted interview). A Japanese woman named Naoe was also provided, but the life of a female ninja is harsher than that of a samurai, and is rarely praised. She is a shadowy figure whose name is difficult even to leave in history, and her situation is always complicated. What is the contradiction that it is impossible to create a male Japanese samurai and possible to create a female ninja who is more difficult to portray? Frankly, I think they want to see an unrealistic black samurai in full armor wetting his cudgel with Japanese blood.

However, once she is fighting Torinaga in a fair fight and the samurai are alerted that there is an assassin and know her location, she is in a bad spot as any assassin would be. Not to mention that the story is better than any of the crap Ubisoft comes up with.

I've never played an Assassin's Creed game. This could've been my first and I was lowkey interested when I heard the game was being worked on some time back. However with everything I know about the western game industry and how AAA games have been the past couple of years I've become distrustful of most big budget titles. When I saw the trailer I wanted to believe this to be a sincere game but I got weird vibes. Seeing this video and other things I've heard it confirmed my suspicions and I would sadly have to skip this one, but hey, money saved.

@@LaPtaVerdad 1) If you are asking in terms of mechanics, that would be because AC has become more combat oriented in the latests releases, so this was the compromise of having a combat oriented character and a stealth one. If your question is more broad, I don’t know why you guys act as if outsider stories are not some of the most popular in media. As if a foreigner becoming a samurai doesn’t elicit the response. Wow. How did that happen? I want to know that story. It’s not like we’re hurting for games with japanese samurai. 2/3) I very vividly remember that you could hide from guards in full gear by merely standing between monks with white robes. Because the protagonists have ALWAYS been the least inconspicuous mfs with their hoods and gear. They always looked like anime protagonists in a crowd of bland npc. But somehow those cases are played off as haha game logic, and this is a sin. You are the npc arguing in bad faith and regurgitating talking points that make no sense for someone that plays videogames. For all you know they also check you and attack you. You haven’t even played the game. 4) As far as I’m aware they dropped the Desmond story line after 4, which lets be honest it always was the weakest part of every AC game. I never cared for any modern stuff. 5) There is something very insidious about stating that you could never make a game about Yasuke without being propaganda. Like the mere existence of a minority is a politically motivated crime, rather than merely being a story that is objectively interesting to tell. And let’s remember, he was an historical figure. Same with the female shinobi. But no, every game has to cater to your every whim otherwise it’s propaganda. Like the political messages about freedom and what not aren’t propaganda but the black guy is. And even then AC has never been 100% historical as they always mess with stuff. Adam and eve, literal magic, a working prototype of a DaVinci flying machine, Templars being this undying organization that want to enslave humanity. But somehow we draw the line at the black guy that actually existed.

Also i highly doubt the game portrays about the intricacy of being a black dude in feudal japan (which would be cool and before you sprout a neuron depleting comment-the trailer would said something like: my name is yasuke and this is my story >:D) is just a random soul less samurai with a black skin (look at me im so tall and strong hoho so interesting character because thats modern liberalism the most racist shiet ever making sure you get the minority quota instead of an actual good story and character; simplification over all ethnicities at its best-thats what racism is btw) 2) yeah you could hide using a white hood in a group of white hooded indiviuals of your same size and close enought ethnic group (100% pausible although obviosly it was very exagerated in those games), but pls tell me how a 2m dude IN FULL ARMOR is gonna hide with 1.5m japanese farmer midgets around (oh also add up he is black and japan even today are so unused to black people that they will look at you as a circus freak) xD 4) that explains the absolute fcukfest that are the assassins creed games nowadays they got literally 0 essence just go play free fire at this point you never cared (because you got a superficial bland taste-same as with politics and culture) but it gave cohersion to the whole story 5) i never stated that you mindless monkey (thats what you want to read because it feeds you propaganda rotten brain) xD the fact that you are instantly victimizing yasuke as the "minority" (because you have 0 concept of what a minority means) is the fact that its propaganda when he should be extremely well off with a samurai status helping the imperialism of his shogun lord and no they were as much as a historical figure as ragnar lothbrok in vikings (which is an amazing show because guess what it focuses on the characters and not in the boom boom i can cut poeple in half im so cool haha-and you just add quota to make them "interesting" or at least tell people racist and such if they tell you your product sucks) and obsiously AC isnt historically accurate its a low fantasy setting after all (which is pretty cool) but that doesnt mean thats its immune to critical thinking over its suspension of disbelief Pd: sorry for calling you a monkey they are actually very intelligent and cute creatures

@@DanJuega Assassin's Creed is an extremely famous and popular IP, it's practically the Batman of video games (yes I know there are also Batman games don't be pedantic), so the first AC game being set in Japan was kind of a big deal given that in spite of the fantastical elements, the AC series has still traditionally paid attention to historical detail. After all this is the series that made a near 1:1 laser scan of the Notre Dame cathedral, which was consulted for the purpose of reconstruction after the fire. So for an insanely popular series made by Canadian devs (and Canadians are basically Americans as far as most of the world is concerned) to choose as its debut title in Japan the one black dude in their premodern history is absolutely political, because it's a statement from the American-ish (again Canada's just a de facto colony of the US) entertainment industry that Japan needs "diversity" in precisely the way that Americans understand "diversity." Yasuke would be perfect in a game like Nioh, but making him the face of the first AC game set in Japan is basically Ubisoft declaring him as the face of Japan itself. And considering that Rahm Emanuel and other DNC cronies are actively targeting Japan for their DEI crap, it's not just a matter of some devs thinking that Yasuke is just really cool.

It looks like AI was used in the concept art. Here's a list of reasons why: There are no monkeys with long tails in Japan. Japanese houses are made of wood, so if they were to grow moss like that, they would rot and collapse. That expression could only be possible with stone construction. The sliding doors have no rails. There are two sliding doors placed in the width of a single sliding door. One sliding door has a double layer in the middle. There are parts where the tatami floor is a different color, it's nonsense. It is obviously impossible for a house to have sliding doors on three sides. Japanese people take off their shoes at the entrance, so there should be a step between the floor and the ground, but there isn't one.

For some reason, the torii gate serves as the gate to the village. The way the helmet is worn and the way the sword is held are also different. There is no end to the list of strange depictions. If you do even a little research on Japan, you'll realize that all of this is wrong. This was just a lack of homework. Despite making it so sloppily, the developer says this: ``Yasuke is a great samurai'' ``Creation based on history''``I want people who are familiar with Japanese history to look forward to it.'' You're very good at jokes. That's probably what the developers thought.Samurai and ninja are popular, so let's make a game set in Japan. However, it's a pain to research, so I'll just make the atmosphere more Japanese-like. All you have to do is do a sloppy job. Creating a fictional myth of a great black samurai also ensures diversity. The concept art was completed by pasting the work of a Japanese creator without permission! Ah, This game is great in the sense that it makes Japanese people uncomfortable.

I mean I can't name a single western game without a white person tbh even games based in Africa Resident Evil 5, Uncharted 4, Far Cry 2, Call Of Duty 2, Sniper Elite 3 protagonist have always been white I don't get the point of having a white person in every single form of media in the west atleast with Japan or eastern places they can make games and movies with the people of that general area

Hi Metatron! I really enjoy your videos and was wondering if it would be possible to do a video on the history of the term “racism”. I think it would be very interesting to learn more about this subject. Because a lot of people today have a misconception of the term. And I think that as a black person, it hurts my community as much as anyone else. Today, some people in America think that you simply can't be racist towards a certain category of people (we all know why), and I find that a very dangerous way of thinking. Thanks again for your quality videos

I second that, racism throughout history would be very interesting. Because the ways various categories of people (sane vs extremists) approach it today already differ a lot, it was likely already different 100 years ago, and a whole other thing during the middle ages, antiquity and so on. Not even "what discrimination was fashionable back then", just "how race differences were perceived".

it's always been strange to me in the assassin's creed games how everyone treats the incredibly well armed man as normal. they did it well in syndicate, concealed weapons like knuckledusters in a coat pocket or a canesword, but like walking around paris with a zweihander on my back and nobody batting an eye was unusual.

Good Afternoon. I found your channel a while ago and love the content you make, I have always loved learning more about history, no matter the time, culture or region. Since I am not American, I find it incredible how some people can be so fixated with politics concerning the wieldest's topics, especially video-games. The first time I learned there was a supposed famous black african warrior in japanese history was when I played NIOH, where there is a boss fight against a "Obsidian Samurai" whom was affiliated with Oda Nobunaga, found that interesting and assumed he must have been real, that was it. Through the years since, I learned a bit about Nobunaga and the fact that found things that came from other parts of the world fascinating, so I remembered that boss fight and found it cool that he seems to have existed and Nobunaga's fascination played a important role to his presence in Japan. When the trailer dropped for AC:Shadows, I wasnt surprised to see Yasuke (didnt even know his name at the time kkk) and figured they were using his presence has an excuse to push diversity. Thanks to your video explaining the historical records about him, I feel more informed about the subject. Thank you for the great informative and unbaias content, hopefully this entire situation dies down and we can all just wait until the game comes out to see what they will actually do. PS: I am Brazillian, so I might have butchered a few sentences here and there, my apologies. PS:PS: We have our own bullshit about people putting politics in everything, but the degree is much more beareble than in the US, hope people calm down and we can go back to being history nerds.

I cancelled my Ubi-sub after that game came out, because of how blatantly immature, disingenuous and irresponsible it is. They sent me an e-mail last week inviting me to a survey to explain why I cancelled, and it had many questions about their service. When I checked that the service was too costly, as one of the reasons I cancelled, they had the gall to ask me why I "feel" that way. To be clear: That service has the fewest number of available games, the fewest number of concurrent players, *and* the highest cost - anywhere. (That I've ever heard of) So, neither the creative teams nor the business/management people at that company have a meaningful understanding of: 1. Their competition's offerings 2. Their industry's supply/demand (pricing/value) 3. The *concept* of historical significance 4. Morality, OR, professionalism TLDR That company is wholly indefensible. The people working there _would_ be ashamed of themselves, had their parents cared enough to bother raising/nurturing/educating (Read: PARENTING) their children.

Some people in power at Ubisoft are incompetent/uncaring, just like in most big companies, and that results in games (and ""services"") being broken in multiple ways. It doesn't mean every single employee is trash. You're the one lacking education for insulting people you know nothing about. Otherwise I agree and I hope you put all that in the survey so a random exec can use it to wipe him/herself with. Because that has to be what they do with player feedback.

Ubisoft has always been the most incompetent of the big developers. But now they are trying to take the title of the most scummy and greediest from the like of Activision, EA and Take2. It's no surprise Ubisoft is in a financial nosedive and desperately searching for a buyer to bail them out.

I wonder why you didn't do that already when they released the viking game? It wasn't different in this regard. Not even a little bit. Did you feel cool running around with a woman's name in that game? Eivor is a woman's name, still used in our age. You might as well have been named Olivia. I'm truly interested in why you were ok with bastardizing Scandinavian culture, but not japanese?

I feel that they should just quit trying to be accurate while obviously trying to appeal to a demographic they don't milk nearly enough....just be a video game with 2 play styles and stop peddling myths like their legit.
@fattiger6957
@fattiger6957 3 ай бұрын
Exactly. If Ubisoft would stop claiming historical accuracy, there wouldn't be an issue. There have been manga and anime where Nobunaga was a demon lord who commanded a army of monsters. And no one had a problem with that because they weren't supposed to take it seriously. Ubisoft should just be honest and say their games are fantasy loosely inspired by history. That way they can do whatever goofy things they want and people can just accept it as pure fantasy.

Ah, I hate the ‘It’s just a video game, relax’ argument, too. Countless adults who have grown up with video games still play them. And if you make a video game for adults (and AC isn’t really for children), you can be expected to do some historical research. If I pay 70€ for a product, I demand a bit more depth than from a Saturday morning cartoon.
