Dhal Puri is an Indian flat bread or roti stuffed with seasoned ground up yellow split peas. It is a favorite about Guyanese and Caribbean people and pairs perfectly well with any kind of curry.

I’m a Mauritian living in london and for years been trying make dalpuri which is as close as Mauritian street food dalpuri. Amazing receipe. I’ve just added some turmeric whilst the dal was boiling and used the water for the dough to get the yellow colour. Thank you so much for posting this video!

Hi I'm from Mauritius as well living in U.k.. i made dhal puri during this lockdown.....delicious. I use tumeric as well, as in Mauritius we like the dhal puri slighly yellow. I only add salt and freshlly roasted ground cummin seeds in the dhal and we do not use yeast in the flour. It is interesting to see how it is made in different part of the world. Thank you for the video.

Thanks for the recipe. We ate this dal Puri 35 years ago in our maternal grandparents house. They're no longer. We miss them and miss this Dal Puri. Since we live in America there is no we can have this and don't know how to make. I feel so emotional to see this easy recipe. Again thanks to you and my grandparents.

OMG Im Mauritian living currently in England.I just saw this and thought it was a dhall Puri making from Mauritius cause it looks exactly the same. Woow amazing! In every corners of every streets in Mauritius they have dhall puri sellers. A lot of times during peak hours you have people queuing to buy. Inside the dhall puris they put a choices of spicy sauces or curries and the famous fresh chillies. Thank you sooo much for this video! Its nice to know other parts of the world share the same street foods, exactly the same. Remind me of home...

Marie Burr, it is our common bhojpuri culture from our Indian Ancestors. Metemgee, great job..dhalpuri looks delicious but first time I am seeing your technique of grinding the split peas. I use an old fashion mill to grind.

In Mauritius, it is so famous, we even have it with chicken curries called kaalia. Every street you will find a dhall puri vendor, it is an everyday staple for every mauritian

i grew up in Trinidad and i tried so many times ,countless, countless times,i finally got it correct this time ,My rotis even puffed up when i was cooking,,,so nice and soft.which i had learnt how to make them before leaving Trinidad at age 14

Thank u soooo much... I’m a southern girl with island ties... just have no clue which one. My ancestor is Ms Mary Reddick & that’s all I know about her, but these loves and flavors of the Caribbean are strong in me, for real. I could eat curries and jerk and Dahl puri ALL day Errry day. I didn’t have access to an island grandma, ma, or auntie to show me how to make these... so THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing us how to do this.

I am from Kerala, India, we have a similar recipe called boli, where in the filling is sweet with dal and molasses, cardamom and the no yeast is added to the dough, love your video👍

Making dhalpuri is an art , after having tried for about 20 years , I have given up , but watching your video makes me feel like I will give it another go . I know exactly what you mean by ‘school time’, tuck shop dhol puri, my older sister would sometimes purchase from Central High school and I can still recall how good they tasted, even after all these years, so thanks for your recipe.

Nothing can compete with the exquisite grubby taste of those old timey Guyanese school vendors, chicken foot, flutie, poulourie, crush ice, ice block, dhal Poori etc...not even gourmet restaurants can achieve that quality, I'm sure they dig their behind and put it in there but it's all good

I had to find this video and thank you one million times for this recipe. I hv always hated making dhal puri. It would break, be messy, just a real stress. Firstly the dough is absolutely fantastic and the overall end results was the best I have ever had making this dish! Also i noticed that this dough did not soak up oil like a sponge. Thanks for a great recipe.

Hi, I tried the recipe and it was very nice. I've never been able to try such a nice dhal Puri. It was fluffy and rated so nice. Just like the one I use to buy in Mauritius when I was in secondary school. I struggled a bit with the dough while I was rolling it it was super soft and it was breaking. May be I overloaded the dhal, am not really sure what I did wrong! It was hard to roll the shall Puri in the pan coz it was breaking and it didn't rise like the one you did but even I must say that even though I struggle with this part the dhal Puri still tasted super nice. The best recipe I ever tried. My 5 year old son had his first dhal Puri and he said: I love this mummy, it's so yummy 😊. If you have any tips for the dough not to break please give me some feedback. Thanks again for your amazing recipe. The whole family loved it ❤️

I think you over stuffed the dough. That’s my problem too sometimes. Don’t over stuff and also make sure the dhal is cool completely before stuffing.

Hi Auntie, did you know the mauritian normally would use the same water that boiled the dhall to mix the dough. Try that Auntie, it adds better taste and flavour.

@@annmarto8169 but the roti takes on a reddish color.when u use the dahl water in the dough,i used that water to cook rice in my rice cooker, came out soo good, i put the rest in a bottle to use next time, nothing wasted.!!! and my roti came out so good!!

I am from Mauritius and we cook the same dhall puri , same name , same ingredients and before the internet we thought that Mauritius was the only place we have dholl puri. The dholl puri sellers here sell a pair of dholl puri with chutney, butter beans and vegetable pickles. Like you Guyanese we have grown up eating dholl puri! After all we are from the same bihari/Calcutta stock and perhaps the dholl puri originates there. Here most add a little yellow colour to the dough. Dholl puri is eaten with kheer too for chawtaree (The day after a wedding ceremony)

Most people add curry to the peas or dough to make it yellow but I like it without that but of curry. So I skipped it.

Yes it originates from there. Bihar/Bengal make lots of Daal Puri it is also called Bedmi Puri. But Puri is the name given to deep fried rotis stuffed or otherwise. Roti is just plain roti baked on griddle( no flaking etc) paratha /porrota is flaky roti or stuffed roti cooked on tawa with a little oil like the above receipe. Leavened flour (stuffed or not) rolled out and fried is called Bhutura.

Lots of trial and error. Lots of failed dhal puris until one day I tried softer peas and it was perfect. So I kept making it that way and then after a few years decided to share.

I love your recipes, they are easy and delicious, I made your roti (buss up shirt ) it came out delicious with my first try of making it! Hi I'm from Mauritius look yummy same as mauritian dhal puri but we dont use yeast or baking soda to knead the dough first tym I'm watching ur video 👍👍👍👌💓💓💓

Scroll through and read the comments of others who’ve tried it. Making dhal puri is not easy but if you take your time and follow the recipe as written you’ll get it!
