Many Metis in the Red River Area have adopted this song as their Metis Anthem song. We wish to thank the lady who originally wrote and sang it. I believe she is from Saskatchawan or Alberta. It is now sung by a very talented Metis lady by the name of Krysta Rey originally from Portage LaPrairie Manitoba. She sings this song at many as an opener at many Metis gatherings and festivals.

"We are Métis. We are neither First Nations nor Inuit, nor European immigrants to this land. Instead, we are the middle-ground between camps; the compromise between differences & the dawn that separates night & day. We are not half-breeds, but the children born of a marriage between 2 very different worlds. To be Métis is to be blessed with the best fruit of not 1, but 2 family trees. We are not "half" of anything, but doubled. Being twice blessed, we are likewise proud, strong & determined."

Metis is mor ethan being mixed blood. It is a history and a community. To be Metis, you have a connection to a historical community and ancestry with people who declared their mixed blood heritage. We were, and are, a part of the history of Canada and the U.S. It is an ancestor that recognized their distinctiveness from First Nations (Indian) and Europeans. It is so much more than mixed-blood.

And why the line about "the true Canadians"? We weren't Canadians... that's why the Canadians came to fight and kill the Metis at Batoche and it definitely wasn't the "end of the pain" at that point either.... wonder who decided THIS is the Métis "national anthem". No disrespect to the composers (someone else posted that one of the two composers wasn't Métis so that's interesting 🤔). But not sure why we're being called the "true Canadians" ... not sure where that came from....

The Metis were not "a perfect balance of two worlds". They were and are Indians. They lived as Indigenous peoples until the they were married into assimilation in some lines, but they are a part of the Canadian Constitution as Indigenous people for a reason.

The metis were only included in 1967 under the charter; and no, good sir, you are misinformed. Riel wasn't elected to parliament as an assimilated European, nor as an indigent. Riel did not meet with the president of the united states under that pretext either. You should read more first hand accounts (primary sources) and do more research before preaching about a history of a people you clearly know very little about. I understand little is currently still available, however I could point you in the right direction if you are interested.

My father's family is Quebecoise and lived in Canada until the 1920's. There are persistent rumors that we have some 1st Nation ancestry in there somewhere, which, since our French ancestors came in the 1650's or so, I have always wondered if there are Metis in my heritage. Seeing the photos of carts here makes me wonder anew, since our name Charest means 'cart driver.' Anyone know of any connections btw my surname and any Metis people? Much love.

Mat Nicholson as far as I understand it no...technically Metis is a specific mix of French/Scots/Cree, the language is Michif , a combination of French/Cree...though today, I don't know if that definition has expanded...I am a Grant descendant. My 5th great uncle Cuthbert Grant Jr. is considered to be the first Metis leader...if my research is correct....his sister Marguerite is my 5th great grandma...

I'm sure he meant no harm and obviously he was working with Metis guitarist for the music I guess... but if Clint is not Métis then maybe that explains how we ended up with a lyric like "the true Canadians". And I hope he wouldn't take offense to the idea of a new anthem bring written... by a Métis lyricist or lyricists.... by Métis for Métis. Enn Michif . You know for sure he isn't Métis then? I actually just posted under his comment on here and asked him. I don't mean him any disrespect... but the idea of any other nation singing words about themselves in an anthem written by someone who isn't a part of their nation... seems insane. So if that is the case I think it is time to address it... thank him for creating something that was used for many years in a respectful way and his good intentions... but now time to write our own. I'm sure he would understand that...

Wait, so if you aren’t Metis you aren’t really a true Canadian? That’s pretty condescending. I would be okay if it was “Now a true Canadian” or “Now we’re true Canadians” showing how they have progressed and regained some of their national identity. However saying that they are the only true Canadian is laughable, anyone who is a citizen of Canada is a true Canadian. The last thing I’m confused about is the whole “nation rising again” part. Are the Metis trying to secede from Canada and actually build a functioning nation state? I think not.

4 years after this comment and we have constitutions in multiple provinces. Yeah we are the true Canadians, sorry it sounds rude but Europeans and whomever else are not Canadians. We led the north western expansion of canada and were the original settlers in the Prarie provinces.

@@CokesAndTokes The Metis are descended from Europeans so your comment makes no sense. To claim to be the true Canadian is a racial supremacist statement which is antithetical to Canada's national identity. Your stupidity is plain to see, I will not respond further so don't bother.

To the contrary I know many who respect them and their heritage because while everyone else talks about how much they hate the government they at least told the government where to stick their bullshit legislation
