A couple of things. There were a couple of other international comic guests - Mike McKone (Exiles, Amazing Spider-Man) and Glenn Fabry (2000AD, covers for Preacher and Hellblazer). While these particular artists may not be your cup of tea and you may not consider them huge names, they certainly have their fanbases. BTW, Donny Cates has been at Supanova before, just not in Melbourne yet (and Supanova does indeed have "comic-con" in their name these days). As you say, this is a fledgling con (despite some of the organisers having arranged other cons before), so expecting them to hit up big names straight off the bat may be expecting a bit much. With respect to the late cancellations, your timeframes are a little off. From the western side of the USA (which is where a lot of TV show filming is done) it only takes around 16 hours for a direct flight from LA to Melbourne. Travel from the other side of the country might take up to 24 hours. The latest cancellation (Tommy Flanagan) was announced on Friday morning, which means that they could have woken up to getting a notification from the actor's agent overnight that they were no longer able to come. I think they did extraordinarily well getting a replacement actor last minute (which presumably they had been working on since Katy O'Brien's cancellation the previous day) which wasn't announced until late Friday morning, which also sort of puts paid to the flight timeframes you suggest. As the organisers indicated, these were last minute cancellations due to the current strikes that are happening over in the US which have thrown filming schedules into chaos. It is unfortunate, but cancellations are a fact of life with these events. In terms of holding off on announcing cancellations to drive ticket sales, I can't see that happening as the bad press that would result if this ever came to light (and trust me, it would come to light eventually) would be unsustainable for such an event. I would have loved to have come along, but given its proximity to Supanova Perth (which was only two weeks ago) I wasn't able to. Hopefully they had a successful event (and I hope the Drink and Draw in particular was a success, as I'd love to attend one of those) and I can make arrangements to come next year if there is sufficient notice.

They need the big international names for yhr comics, nah I haven't heard of those you named and I'm sure they have a big fan base but I'm sure a lot of people would want to see guys like Chip, Williamson, King, kirkmen, lemire etc. I get cancellations happened I don't really care about that and understand but it seems to be always last minute or a day or 2 before cancellations. Lucky you didn't come down though mate, the place was dead and I heard some people that were lining up for photos complain there wasn't enough time to get the pics, get their signature and watch the panel. I hope it's back next year more con's the better but there is room for improvement.

The other thing to remember is that this is pretty much peak period in terms of comic conventions in the US (being summer over there), so availability can also be quite a big issue.

TPC Con is the big dream, though I have no connections to organise guests, but then again, you're pretty famous at cons, so i mite get you as a guest and set you up on your own table.
