Check washing is very old and was in the movie "Catch Me If You Can" so it was around in 1980. I wouldn't call anything that is at least 42 years old "new".

it's shocking how often this is Still occuring in 2023. Especially since there has been a Pen avaiable for many years (at least 15 years) that will prevent/stop check washing, it is the Uniball 207 pen, it cannot be washed off. I just found out about it recently and ordered some online. I don't write many checks anymore BUT some places only accept checks like ordering Passport, or even when I had to pay Cobra Health Insurance they only accepted a physical check.

They can wash the back as well. Get the special check writing pens that use harder to wash ink.
