Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration
These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
If you didn’t read these rules and left a comment. Thanks for helping with the algorithm.

Thank you Shawn for editing, the rest of the team too! I am very glad that Scott finds the HGSS aesthetic to be peak. I do wonder if part of the reason they were rendered with so much love is because Johto is based on the Kansai region where Nintendo is headquartered and which functions as Japan’s cultural heart. I think both Guts and Choice Specs can be amazing items for solo challenges, they just need to be planned around which limits their utility a bit. Pryce was a bad fight to test Choice Specs on, as his Pokemon are type diverse enough that you can't cover everything with 1 move. But for a trainer like Jasmine where a fire type move can solo all 3 of her Pokemon, Choice Specs will let you overpower her Steelix (It doesn't matter in this case because Mewtwo is OP, but for weaker Pokemon it's something to consider). Guts is also incredible, but you do need to come into battle with a status condition to get any use out of it. Otherwise you entirely rely on the opponent activating it, which is why it has felt so underwhelming so far. These strategies are probably better for second playthroughs, when you are planning out routes and need to reach certain damage thresholds.

Hi Scott. I hope this is received, but I wish you a very happy New Year. I figured that I would also say that I enjoy your live streams and videos both, I actually enjoy the livestreams after the original airing as a nice long video to listen to while completing work, while these 'compact' videos are something I enjoy for the dense information and unique interactions. I honestly enjoy every show you make. One thing I would suggest you possibly looking into, is maybe putting a backdrop or border around the pokemon in your tier list who have to use Double Team/evasion at level 100. You currently have a nicely developed tier list and I think it works perfectly for detailing how effective each Pokemon is, but I sorta think there should be some representation for those Pokemon who just... can't beat the game without evasion. The only other thought I had was maybe making three tier lists (for Heart Gold on, maybe) where you show the best times for the Pokemon from the Start through the E4/Champion, Through the rematch, and then through the Challenge Battle. Something to compare between different graphs to show how some Pokemon might be excessively dominate through the first half of the game and then struggle at Red/Steven or such. I don't know if the graphs would best be "Start through E4", "Start through E4 Rematch" and "Start through Finish", or "Start through E4/Champion", "E4/Champion through E4 Rematch", and "Rematch through Challenge Finish"... But it would at least show where some Pokemon shine early and others shine late, and could easily extrapolate data on what types/moves/abilities really work for different parts of the game.

Thank you Shawn for editing the absolutely insane amount of videos that this channel puts out, and thanks to Scott, and the rest of the team as well for helping my work days go by that much quicker. Also, while I think the HGSS overworld is a lot prettier than the ones from gen 5, I wouldn't call the Unova game's aethetics bad, especially not the battle stages! Frankly I think that the Galar and Paldea games look the worst of them all, because they lack the bright or pretty colors that you'd see in earlier generations, including 6 and 7. The graphics in those games aren't pretty enough to make up for the realism like they do in Legends Arceus, either, so they come out looking bland and generic. Anyway, I can't wait to see what 2025 has in store! The Heart Gold runs seem especially brutal, so it seems like it's going to be really bottom-heavy compared to other games

your videos have been a highlight of my day this whole month, and generally this year. Thank you so much for doing what you do. I've learned so much about the nitty gritty of these games from watching these videos, and it's particularly fun looking up or learning about movesets and head-desking out of frustration with Game Freak's totally inexplicable and completely unjustifiable choices. we love these poorly optimized games, don't we? I take some issue with your Black/White hate but that's an aesthetic preference. that being said, those games will also not necessarily be good for solo challenges because any Pokemon that needs to overlevel will have a Bad Time due to the unique way experience works in Gen V exclusively. whatever anyone's feelings about BW, HGSS looks great. Honestly XY are really aesthetically pleasing WHEN YOU'RE NOT IN LUMIOSE, too. my most hated visually are Sun/Moon and Scarlet/Violet. despite that I've played a lot of SV because I enjoy futzing around in open worlds, but ugggggh the frame rate, the textures, Choices Were Made. I really, really hope the next games look more like either Sword/Shield or Legends Arceus. maybe the latter in particular, aside from the environmental design that game is visually peak.

I'm guessing Flamethrower might have the least utility of the 3 (although it's my favorite), so maybe buying stacks of Fire Blasts and Focus Blasts is the better play for flexibility. Then occasional physical moves. So basically: Psychic, Bolt Beam, Fire Blast/ Focus Blast/ physical move/ Rest

I agree. Ironically I think the only thing he needed to solve was Red and he ran Ice Beam over Focus Blast. Focus Punch or Drain Punch could have worked the same.

A quick thing to point out: Slowpokes in the Slowpoke Well have a specific overworld sprite to have them without their tails. THAT is the level of care and detail put in this game's design!

Choice specs seems really good for the Kimono Girls since they're all individual battles. Therefore mechanically you can change moves between eeveees. Thanks for another great year of content btw! Your work has been a favorite of mine since the very early days. You've probably become the most thorough solo runner on youtube. It's pretty impressive.

Hi Scott, I'm from Sweden and have followed you for several years, since the beginning I think. I'm a gen1er so I only watch your kantho and jotho content (sorry!). I'm probably the same age as you. I just felt I wanted to thank you for your entertainment. I love your videos. I love the quality, the casual tone, and your consistency. You have improved over time but kept the concept. I really think you are amazing. I love you, thank you for what you do, and never change. Improve, but don't change! Best regards from Sweden :)

Here's an aspect of pokemon that doesn't get talked about much that I feel is sort of pertinent for doing solo challenges, or anything like a nuzlocke where you're seeing the beginning many times: how long it takes to truly start a game. I'm defining everthing between naming your character and getting your first pokeballs as "starting the game" in this, and keeping it to gens 1-4 both to keep it somewhat brief, and those are the gens Scott is running Gen 1: -Leave house -Enter route 1 -Get starter -Rival battle -Get parcel -Go back to lab Gen 2: -Talk to mom -Get starter -Go to cherrygrove -Go north to Mr pokemon -Fight rival -Talk to Elm/police Gen 3: -Leave truck -Set clock -Talk to mom -Visit May/Brendan -Pick starter -Save Birch -Travel north to 104 -Fight May/Brendan -Go back to lab Gen 4 (specifically platinum): -Watch tv -Talk to rival -Talk to mom -Go to rival's house and talk to him -Go inside rival's house and talk to him again -Go to route 201 -Get starter -Battle rival -Talk to mom -Go with rival to lake -Listen to Cyrus monologue -Go to Sandgem town -Talk to Dawn/Lucas and rival -Talk to Rowan -Talk with Dawn/Lucas -Go back to Twinleaf -Talk to mom -Go back to Sandgem again -Talk to Dawn/Lucas and watch catching tutorial And that doesn't account for the fact that some of the individual steps in platinum will take longer on their own than the entire process from starters to pokeballs does in gen 1, especially if you play on an original ds.

Wow what a stomp XD. I think we all expected this so not a suprise but Mewtwo really is just that amazing huh? Not without problems though especially near the end which really does show just how brutal these games really are. HGSS are definetly the most difficult games to solo run we've seen on the channel so far. I think most of the problems you ran into over the playthrough probably could be solved by just replacing flamethrower with focus blast once you beat Jasmine. It solves the dark type issues and also gives you super-effective damage against Red's Snorlax. Flamethrower is good but Focus Blast can solve the steel types while covering more and ice beam solves the grass types already. It probably gives you more candies near the end too which will help with Red who seems to be the only real challenge the game offers for a monster like Mewtwo. Overall tho still a really killer result especially considering this is your 8th playthrough of the games ever and you're still relatively inexperienced on gen 4 as a whole. What an amazing year for your content. I did thank yous yesterday but don't mind repeating today, especially for Shawn since I know Daily December is probably pretty brutal for them but they perservere anyway. So many people come together to make these videos possible and with the collaborating on the discord the channel really does present itself as a real community effort now. If I do want to add one caveat to your thank yous by the end I think all of us in the community want to give an especially big thanks to YOU as well Scott. After all you're the one who brought all of these people together and have been a real piller for the community. Good work and I'm excited to keep following your stuff in the new year. Enjoy your break!
