Every November a celebration known as the Vigil of the Authentic Intrepid Searchers of Danger takes place in the city of Juchitán, Oaxaca, in Mexico. In this community of Zapotec indigenous people, it's generally understood that there are men, there are women, and there are muxes (pronounced "mooshez"). Muxes are born men, raised as women, and live as women all their lives. The Vigil-or Vela-is the most important event of the year for the muxes of Juchitán, as one of them is crowned queen during the festival. In this documentary we travel to Juchitán to meet members of the "third gender" of Zapotec culture, and to hang out at the Vigil, which was honestly one of the best parties we've ever been to.

I lived in Mexico 2003 -2004, it was one of the best times of my life. So much fun and laughter. Everywhere I went they called me Morenitaaaa. Thy talk as if they are singing. I can honestly say I never laughed so much in my life like I did in Mexico.

Yeah, not really accepting because they aren't "allowed" to experience love or be in an open relationship. They are just expected to take care of their parents until they pass then be alone. Seems like they are tolerated because they provide a vital role. That kinda breaks my heart.

Way better and progressive then in the states. Some kids don't even have the love of parents regardless bc of their sexuality or because of how they gender themselves
@illbeyourstumbleine
@illbeyourstumbleine 3 жыл бұрын
@@r3drift you're comparing a whole country to one town. We have very progressive towns in the United States as well where most people/parents are very accepting. That's a very unfair comparison. I fully agree with the fact we have a very long way to come here, but you can't compare such a small demographic with such a large diverse one. I have a gay child myself and we live in a red state. I am fully supporting of them in every way. That also means I am happy they have a partner and a home with them. I don't want or expect them to take care of me because I am accepting of them. Our love has no conditions. That is my point I think you missed by trying to compare instead of understanding.

Yea but that’s not just a muxe issue, it happens in most traditional families here in México. Either the youngest or oldest daughter stays to take care of the parents. They aren’t exactly allowed to marry like their siblings. The ‘role’ that a muxe plays is similar to that, that’s why they are far more wanted. Just like the youngest daughter is more taken care of. It’s not ideal or good, but is the way things are, unfortunately, for several families. Mexico has a different cultural definition of acceptance than USA, but it’s up to you how that is seen.
@illbeyourstumbleine
@illbeyourstumbleine 3 жыл бұрын
@@alienmexicano1037 I am fairly progressive, so of course for me that doesn't seem like a fair way to treat any child, however there are many places and many faiths that have practices (usually toward women) that I don't agree with. Just because I don't agree with them who am I to call someone's culture or faith wrong? I can say I disagree and that's not how I would do it, but it isn't for me to say Muslims or Orthodox Jews are wrong. It's a very hard line to balance to try to be respectful of these things and not feel sorrow for those who are willing participants who want more from life but are stuck in their environment. Sadly I see that in this video and I am sure it's in many of these communities. For me the lack of choice is where the problem and hurt lies. Choice, not expectations. Hope that makes sense.

Tho i do still get icky feelings about them not being "allowed" to have a partner even after the passing of their parents if everyone was really completely supportive and accepting they would see that just like every othe human being they need love and they deserve that but even with that its still nice to see that they are being accepted, supported, and loved in a lot of other ways. Im sure as time goes on it'll become more and more normal for everyone to have a loving partner.

This year it might be written finally explictitly in the constitution that absolutely nobody must be discriminated under any cicumstance. Hopefuly more progressive changes to come will be implemented.

Ok I'm not Mexican, but I'm Colombian American. And I do say that these muxes live there lives the way that all want it. And of course out here in the U.S. we have gays, lesbians, metrosexual, pansexual, and of course trans who have been discriminated all there lives while in mexico these ladies never get any of that. I wish out here and world wide can just accept people for who they are and never judge them by there covers. They just live the same life as we do.

I used to go down to Mexico when i was a little girl with friends that had family there. I always had a good time and the people treated me very well, especially since i had blonde hair(they love blondes). It was always fun and i can honestly say they genuinely know how to party. It was nothing mean or perverted then. I wonder now that the drug cartels have ruined everything, if it would even be safe to go there anymore and especially for these people?!
@LUPINMTY

Well cartels now are not as dangerous as. Before their "War" is over. And they dont mess with tourists. And also they are located in some specific areas and cities of Mexico.

ERIKA DOWDY that is why I said some areas. Maybe you are talking about Acapulco? That is the worst place to visit in México right now. But you can go to Cancun, puerto vallarta, los cabos or Mazatlán :)
@erikadowdy686
@erikadowdy686 9 жыл бұрын
Lupin mty yes. I certainly did not mean ALL of Mexico. It is beautiful in certain pkaces down there and they do rely on tourism BUT, Anywhere down there a person should be reminded- They are in a different country and rules and laws that apply in America or anywhere else DO NOT necessarily apply there. AND a person that gets in ANY kind of teouble ANYWHERE should always seek help from their countries Ambassadors. It they can get to them...... Mostly cartels are prominent by the border towns like Tiajuana, etc. I think?! Becuz most of their activities rely on getting stuff across borders. Right??? I could be WAY off though.
@LUPINMTY
@LUPINMTY 9 жыл бұрын
ERIKA DOWDY oh Yes the border is where their operations are mostly happen. But I have to tell yo that in the case of Tijuana, border with California, the situation is tensly calm. The cartels operates....if we can say civilized....there are low attacks from one to each other...but in the case of Reynosa border with Texas is out of control. The cartels owns the City :(

Many indigenous cultures have gender variant groups but capitalism, imperialism and Western religion is trying to eradicate something as ancient and natural as humanity itself.

It's sad that American culture is so antiquated in their views of what can be beautiful. I've been to this celebration and had a great time. I'm a straight male and can appreciate these ladies in the video all the more because they aren't all inherently feminine and have to go that extra mile to be so and I can really respect that kind of dedication to anything especially one's own identity.

I hope this gets a thumbs up for everyone to see and to clarify: I'm Mexican and know what the Muxe culture is (vice did not explain well). In that small town from where Muxe are they have this culture were if the last kid you plan on having is born a boy, they cut his penus. Yes, they cut his penus because in the culture the last one born is the one that has to take care of the family (if its a girl, than its ok, they don't do anything about it). Being a Muxe is more then putting a dress on.

They are such beautiful people, inside and out! I just love how content they are, how happy they are to be living their lives as they chose and with dignity! It just radiates from them. So happy that this lifestyle can exist somewhere, the rest of the world needs to learn from Mexico. Including the western world, as open minded as we *think* we are....

I'm sorry the priest in this video boggles my mind. How is hatred and rejection towards homosexuals a personal problem? The Catholic Church and other major religions indoctrinated people to have those feelings. Not a personal problem a problem created by the short comings of the church.

Well damn, I had heard of muxes before but I didn't knew much about it. I definitely don't know my own country at all. So cool that muxes are accepted somewhere, I wish the whole country accepted them as well. Although I don't like that they are not allowed to be with someone else, that part is not fair and sad.
