I'm planning on fabricating a box of sorts with aluminum dp. I like the scoring idea. That will help. A friend of mine is a master welder. He hates spool guns lol. I'm going to tig my joints. Just bought a Primeweld TIG 225X. Nice box though! Well done!

Takes a long time to get good at the hand skill for welding. My buddies who have careers not fab related always think I'm a wizard with what I can do. I also do it 8 hours a day everyday lol. The welds for someone new to spool welding weren't exactly embarrassing. I'd say that's a very good start. Keep practicing!

Looks great gave me some ideas for building mine. Also think about adding a weep hole in case water gets in also for condensation. You need a way for air and little moisture that will end up inside. You may have built It water tight but water will end up Getting in so it needs to come out. It doesn’t need to be big just needs to be able to air out so mold doesn’t grow inside

Where can i get a hinge and the lock. Whats the name of the lock?

Hello @Aa-ron25 , thank you for commenting! The lock can be found under truck toolbox latch. The hinge is known as a piano hinge. Industrial Metal Supply is a metal distributor and we don't carry hardware such as the latch. We do carry piano hinges, but you would have to cut them to size yourself. Besides that, you should be able to find these pieces of hardware at your local home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. Amazon may carry these items as well.

Approximately how many hours would you say it takes to do this project?

Depends on how many someone has done. Also depends how far you want to go with it. Just folding an aluminum little box. If you talking first timer folding a basic metal box I would guess 10-16 hours start to finish. Now if you are talking about building a strong had to bash into. With building extra gussets, adding locks, making it water tight, glueing it up, testing it, mounting it, and painting I would guess between 15-40 hours maybe even longer depending on the person making it. Metal fab time varies majorly depending on how quality, longevity, and over all custom skills. Is it cheaper to just buy one or building your own. It’s always going to be cheaper to buy something pre made like this but this way gives you the chance to make it your own, the way that fits best for your application, and personal knowledge. In the end there’s more value in something you made custom to work for you then just the value in material. People need to learn that when buying items like this your not only Paying for materials but your paying for the knowledge that the person has gained building things. Plus the value knowing it’s built correctly and exactly how you want it to be built

How thick is the treadplate you are working with in this video? I always struggled with anything thinner than .125 with my spool gun. .080 is the thinnest I've done somewhat consistently with practice before welding. Finally picked up an import pulse TIG for thin aluminum. Haven't used it yet.

By the time you get to the lid your welds "sound" a lot better. Might want to make sure you are getting good gas coverage. Should reduce suit. Maybe some sort of gas spreader inside the nozzle. One of the guys on one of the big welding channels used something that looked like a coarse scotch bright pad inside the nozzle of his spool gun to make sure the gas went out all around his electrode.

WOULDNT HAVE MIG WELDED IT.. TIG SHOULDA BEEN USED ALL THE WAY.. VERY RISKY WITH SPOOL GUN BECAUSE YOU GENERALLY MUST MOVE FAST AND STEADY TO ACHIEVE GOOD WELDS WITHOUT OVERHEATING..

terrible idea to score the back of aluminum for a bend. Bends easy but will break over time for sure. nice ryobi tools too. KZbinrs never invest in quality tools because they clearly don't make their living with the tools. Bet his camera is nice though. Dont listen to anything this guy says. another youtube fabricator, not a pro.

I was wondering about that. If he had a hand brake I figured he probably wouldn’t have needed to score it. And I’ve seen pros use Ryobi before. They work great.
