I’d love to see a transformation scene like this span out throughout a movie. At the beginning she had bad posture, unkept hair, bad dry skin, calloused hands and feet and throughout the film you see her posture being fixed which assists with her confidence issues, you see her learn how to treat and take care of whatever her hair type may be which makes her hair healthier and gorgeous, you see a proper skin routine which makes her face and body look healthy and rich, and take care of her hands and feet and whatnot. So you don’t just through development into a thirty minute segment.

@Kirsty Birsty same fine wavy hair 2B waves and some actual curls inbetween. Can't straightened it often. I got a lot of backlash growing up in the 90s/2000s. My mom even got in trouble for not brushing out my curls. It was seen a sign of neglect. And lots of commentary like: oh you built a nest for birds on your head. Even a teacher in school looked at me and said: well your hair doesn't look fresh today. It was washed this morning, but I had no time straightening. I grew up hating my hair, always wanting naturally straight hair. I disliked it for so long I can't start to like it again. My ideal has been thick straight hair and bangs for so long, it will never change probably.

I was a little girl when I first saw this movie, and I had hair just like hers and I knew even then from experience that no amount of straightening would ever keep it that straight without constant flat ironing or resorting to relaxing it. When she goes to school with the hat on the next day, and she still has perfectly straight hair hidden underneath, is when the movie magic officially stopped because I knew that just wasn’t possible unless she had a stylist constantly following her around with a pair of GHDs. The heat and the friction would have turned her hair, straight or not, into a frizz ball.
@pixie924415 ай бұрын
More than likely, a protein or rebonding treatment was used then, since it lasts much longer than heat alone and causes less frizz. That, or Paolo gifted Mia a basket of hair products (probably deep conditioner, heat protectant, anti-frizz cream, volumizing hairspray, maybe even some Olaplex if she's worried about breakage) and a straightener to take home with her afterwards so she could care for it herself, and we just didn't see it happen onscreen. Once that's done, she would just need a good cotton or wool hat that isn't too small to fit her hair, a dryer sheet and travel-sized hairspray in her bag in case she does need to de-static said hat or fix her volume, and to just be really careful when twisting it up and be sure to duck into the bathroom from time to time to take it off and give her hair a break.

As much as I love this movie, it was reinforcing the stereotype that girls with curly hair and glasses are ugly and you have to get contacts and straighten your hair to be beautiful. As a dark skin black girl who wears glasses and has naturally curly afro hair, this definitely had a negative effect on me. I like flat ironing my hair sometimes but my natural hair is just as beautiful.
@lesley12043 жыл бұрын
Same here. Growing up, I had to wear glasses and my hair used to look exactly like Mia’s. I haven’t watched this movie in years and seeing some of it now, it’s dawned on me how much this scene affected me and how I saw myself. I remember telling my parents I didn’t want to wear my glasses anymore, despite me needing them, and stealing my mum’s hair straighteners to get rid of my curls.

Its more the beauty standard, flat hair, clear skin, slim waistline were all things admired back then not as much now and more people are embracing themselves instead of fitting in so that also matters
@heartwings25173 жыл бұрын
I agree, natural "frizzy" hair is not ugly and it is wrong to teach kids that glasses are ugly. I remember being crushed & teased when I had to start wearing glasses in about 4th grade because "glasses were ugly". Add acne & braces to that later and it can kill self esteem. In that respect this movie gives girls a very bad message of what beauty is and that nobody pays attention to you until you get pretty and have pretty clothes.
@boldandthebeautifulfans22173 жыл бұрын
That’s the only thing I didn’t like about this movie they made Anne Hathaway to be this teenage girl with big bushy hair and glasses making it seem like she wasn’t beautiful enough and they had to change her appearance around in order to be accepted and fit in as a princess

True, this is from like 2001 and if you compare it to mean girls which is just 3 years apart, already mid 2000's, it's a total different vibe, and scenario, in 2001 it was still Gen X vibe, Britney, straightened hair, all cute and perfect, in 2004 it was already millennial territory, more punk/emo Avril Lavigne style, even with the "plastics", they're more punk-ish if you compare them to Anne Hathaway in this movie or anything from late 90s early 2000s

It’s not about the thickness of the eyebrows it’s about how they’re shaped, the eyebrows style and outline is what was not so pretty they were more irregular, and also the hair style was irregular too, in general big hair is prettier than thin flat hair but styling of the hair also has a role in making it look pretty.

So, is there any movie with a makeover scene where, instead of insisting on contacts or laser eye surgery, they actually say, "Here, these will frame your face much more nicely" and then give her some super cute glasses or something? Because even though I don't often care for movies with makeover scenes, I'd totally be willing to watch that.
@elenaplaksenkova37768 жыл бұрын
+KoyasuNoBara There is TV series "Ugly Betty". The title character wears big op-fashioned glasses, braces, and dresses really terribly in the beginning. So the "transformation" starts with her putting on more elegant things, and at the end of the series she removes the braces and puts on really nice glasses…. and starts looking quite pretty)) But, actually, I noticed that it is extremely rare that a female lead character in a major movie wears glasses constantly. There is Harry Potter, but he is a guy; whereas girls who wear glasses are usually secondary "nerdy" characters, which kind of creates a bias that glasses are not "cool" (and then people in real life are very much upset about wearing glasses)

Luckily there are now at least a few pop musicians around who have beautiful curly hair like Charli XCX and Lorde... And in the scifi show Doctor Who there is the wonderful River Song played by Alex Kingston who has the most beautiful hair ever! It is even frequently mentioned in the show :P
