Minor rule correction to something Tom said - in the original Clank! you don't keep device cards in front of you, instead you use them immediately when you spend the skill points and then discard them. They never get played in front of you and you don't get to keep them for later.

This review gives me flashbacks to your King of New York review where you all gushed about how much better it was than the original but over time Zee and Sam cooled on it drastically. I have a feeling that in a year or two we'll still be talking about Clank! but very few people will be talking about "In! Space!."

I have clank, sunken treasures, and clank in space and I can safely say that clank in space gets the most play. The game just flows better and is more fleshed out. You can win a regular game of clank so easily by just buying movement, grabbing the first artifact, and leaving immediately.

Great news they mitigated the "get in and out too quickly" problem of the original game... Now I am interested... My previous sessions of Clank really suffered from that and always left me a feeling of wanting to have done much more than what I could do.

The "quickly in and out" tactic always fails. When teaching, I always warn people that it is something you can do, but I would not recommend it, because everyone else has many turns still to snatch up goodies while your game is essentially over watching everyone else. It has never really been a problem in the games I have played.

Clank and it's expansion are easily our light favorite family games (Mansions of Madness our go to for deeper and lengthier gaming). I can't wait to own this and will own all the versions of clank!

If I didn't already own the original Clank! and I was choosing between the original game and this I might go with this only because the modular board and the requirement to hack into the vault area with the artifacts sounds like a small improvement. On the other hand I really do like the original with the Sunken Treasures expansion's underwater areas and maps so I am perfectly content with that as well. Now if they release an expansion for the original that includes a modular board similar to the one in Space then that would be an instant buy. :)

My guess is that Renegade released CLANK! IN! SPACE! to introduce the new system, and will in the future release an expansion for the original game that includes all of the new stuff.

Wow, I didn't expect the negative reactions to this! I personally have had nothing but problems trying to get my hands on the original so I'm hoping this will be easier to nab. Of course I'm happy that it will be the revised/streamlined rules. I can see though, that if I had managed to buy it last year, perhaps I would be pissed that this new version came out with no upgrade path for the original.

Reading comments all around the web, I can tell this is a good lesson on expectations management by companies. Cool version of one of the hit games of 2016. I rather have this new one to diversify the themes in my collection.

I am just not getting genuine enthusiasm from The Dice Tower crew on this one. Though I would be tempted to buy, I do agree with the King of New York/King of Tokyo comparisons made by others here...this really reminds me of their KoNY review(and since then their endorsement of that game had lessened dramatically compared to the original). I'll be reading some BGG reviews for further information.

A little bummed out that clank! Received pretty much Universal high praise and has been on my to buy list for a while waiting for my annual christmascon game exchange with my buddies. Now it gets lambasted by 2 of 3 in this review compared to its sequel. Now I am not sure which to request. I like the idea of a quicker set up and game play of the original. I like sci fi and fantasy both and might slightly prefer the artwork on the original. Plus BGG loves the original I would need to wait to get a even comparison. I really like the push your luck element in the original but have only played a demo. Now I am worried that it would be too all over the place to be fun... Ugh

The theme doesn't look like it transferred 100%, maybe I'm just too familiar with the original version... but why are they still swords? Shouldn't it have been some sort of ray-gun? Hopefully they add the factions to regular Clank! with an expansion. Interesting that they dropped the value of the Secret Tome analog from 7 to 5. However, I'm unsure about it, but right now I think I'll probably pass. ETA: Oh, they're "laser swords?" Yeah, still should have been a ray-gun.

The swords are really disrupting the theme. Yeah, you might say it's lightsabers but come on, obviously they look like regular swords. I feel a little... betrayed. Instead of working on new cool boards and mechanics for Clank! they "wasted" time on this weird space spin-off.

Mechanically related, but not "95% identical" because of the new theme. Which games have expansions that change the theme completely? Should Star Wars: Imperial Assault have been an expansion for Descent 2nd edition?

Many of the cards are identical to the original with a different theme. The theme itself is just dressing. I agree with Ethan. It's too similar and all the changes could have been done with an expansion. Many games have spin offs with a different themes, but most of them don't repeat most of the game over again. Marvel Legendary Villains has no cards that are the same other than the starter cards. Same things for all of the other Legendaries. Legendary Alien does not have the same cards with different names except for the basic cards.

Virginia P those 3 board are double sided. Meaning there are 6 possibilities for the first slot, leaving 4 for the next slot, and 2 for the final. 6 times 4 times 2. 6 times 4 is 24, times 2 is 48. Which is exactly the math he did live in the video, for those of us paying attention.

From what I see, I like the fantasy theme more (opposite of Zee), but I am curious to at least play this. It doesn't look different enough for me to insta-buy, though. Maybe I will decide to buy it later, but small changes and a retheme aren't making me jump at it just yet.

I don't have a problem with the "get in, get out" strategy in the original; I just wouldn't play with the type of people who would try to blow the game up by doing that.

Yeah, but still sometimes I have seen people do it. The disruption is not that they win, it is that they force everyone else to be out in 4 turns, and usually there are not enough artifacts close to the entrance to pull this off, so it almost feels like luck based kingmaking.

Isn't that basically a mechanic of the game though? By exiting, you put a timer on the game that will force the other players to leave early. If you have a point lead over your opponents and they still need to push further into the dungeon for an artefact, then it makes no sense to risk your victory. Sometimes it backfires because you lose on the opportunity to gain extra points and sometimes it gives you the win. It's a legitimate decision that needs to be made every turn once you have an artefact. It's absurd that you would refuse to play with people for playing the game in a way you don't like, even though its within the intended scope of the game.

Funny because I can always win by doing this. Problem with original is yes you can do that but if you have a house rule that you can't then when is it "acceptable" to leave the dungeo

So this is what so many people were going crazy over, wondering what the embargo was? Was hoping for Project Elite second printing from CMON or something. Ehh this feels like King of Tokyo/New York all over again. Now I'm in a pickle, since I don't own Clank! and unsure whether to go with that game and its expansion or this Clank! In! Space!. Which one will get shoved aside in favor of the other? Thanks publishers I love when you do this crap. It's Shadowrun Crossfire and Dragonfire all over again...although Catalyst did hint at more xfire expansions because of the release of Dragonfire, but I'm a bit pessimistic on whether they will deliver or not.

This indeed does look good. I was contemplating on getting the original as I'm not sure I want another deck builder in my collection. Aeon's End being my favorite along with Hero Realms and Marvel Legendary. I'm just loving the Parody after Watching Rhado's Run-through. Love the modular board idea for even more variety and the Parody is so good. Hmmm.........

The artwork is not as good though. The artwork in the original Clank is great and colorful but the artwork in this game feels like a spreadsheet. They could have done so much better with the artwork for this sci-fi version.

Why? Don't get addicted to expansions, if you feel replayability depends on expansions the game is not that good in the first place.... And game companies do this all the time, e.g. Memoir '44/BattleLore, Castle Panic got three re-implementations as full games etc.

This is pretty disappointing. The theme of clank is so good and super thematic, don't make too much sound digging in dungeon or the dragon attacks. The theme on this just doesn't grab me, and I'm a huge scifi fan, moreso than fantasy. Just not feeling this...

Ironically Clank Legacy could really work. Multiple generations of heroes stealing treasures from ancient monsters or warlords. And each game makes a minor change to the characters based on what you take, and their are a pile of tiny boxes of different treasures or relics to take each time some are taken away, each that generates a new secondary stat on the next generation of heroes from those families.

I have to disagree, I think Clank! In Space is mostly average. I played it 4 times and every game at the halfway point, always turned into this mad dash of grabbing something and escaping, because no one buys any cards in the center, in fear of causing the overlord to strike. This happened every time with different play groups and people. The game is 90-120 minutes, but at that 50 min mark. Every player would just cycle through their deck to play movement cards. The game lacks "removal/deck thinning cards" and or heal cards. So the same six cards would be available to purchase, since no one is buying them. Not to mention any game with player elimination that is longer than an hour is just trash in book. If the original Clank! Has this issue as well, then it may not be as bad, since that one is about 35-50% shorter. This one was a dud for me. Traded it within a month.

That's what seemed strange to me too. I think sometimes a game "checks all the boxes" so you feel like you're supposed to like it...but you've kind of seen it before. Is that why their approval wasn't matched by on-camera energy? I can't speak for them but that is my best guess.

The base game is common, but they make quite a few changes on top - so it's not only a retheme. And you should check out the Dominion or Ascension lines of games if you really want to see "churning" while looking at just the base mechanism...
