I think it’s because it was before corporations took over. This was a time when going to the game didn’t break the bank. The fans in the stands were blue collar and more passionate (in my opinion) than club seaters of today. The orange bowl was a “thunder dome” where visiting teams would have to call time out frequently because they couldn’t hear. Even parking was a challenge. Today stadiums are plushy and feel more like a food court mall. The vibe is Jimmy buffet and the silly “fins up” and not Queens “we will rock you” anthem of the early 80’s.

Thank you for posting this. I was at this game with my late Dad...11 years old and a Dolphins fan. Which was weird because we had season tickets to the Jets since 1964 and I went to almost every Jets home game with my Dad from the time I was 7 until I got my first job and started working on Sundays. My family moved from Long Island to northwest NJ in 1968 but my Dad kept the season tickets and took my oldest brother, then the middle brother...then me when it was my turn. The trek out to Shea and back was an all-day affair. I often think back now to all of those years and all of those Sundays my father made that trip with my brothers and me. Such great childhood memories... but not so much on this day when Barkum caught that pass...lol

One of the best jet games i have seen at shea. Richard Todd was playing with fractured ribs in front of 60 thousand loyal jet fans. Frank Sinatra was singing "NEW YORK , NEW YORK" over the pa system after Todd threw a td pass in the final minute as Shea Stadium rocked . IT was totaly electric. i actualy felt the place shaking. JETS AT SHEA THERE WAS NOTHING BETTER !!

Anyone else watching here in July of 2020 and reliving these all time classics during this damn zombie apocalypse we are going thru? As a long time Jet fan, this was the game when Richard Todd finally lived up to all the hype. He was a true warrior in this game battling thru a broken rib and bum leg and still leading the Jets to the win in final seconds. Once again the Dolphins more than any other rivalry the Jets have had over the years have had the most memorable games....win or lose. This game was just another example.

I was at this game, incredible ending, Todd to Barkum for the winning TD, the eruption from the crowd at Shea was the loudest cheering I ever experienced at a live event, what a Epic day at good ol Shea .

Laying around this rainy Saturday morning, watching this game takes me back to the glory days of the Jets at Shea. No Jet game after 1983 has come close to the atmosphere naturally created in Queens. 16-15. Jets win. Football like it oughta be.

I still remember this game like it was yesterday. The Cowboys are my favorite team, but the Jets have always been close to my heart, and when they won this game, I was celebrating as much as any Cowboy win. This win capped an amazing 4 year run they had against Miami (7-0-1). And the Dolphins were division champions 2 of those 4 years (79 and 81). Unfortunately, the Dolphins more than made up for those 4 years of futility by going 3-0 against the Jets in 1982…..stomping them at Shea on opening day, 45-28, winning on a game winning FG in Miami, 20-19, then winning the AFC Championship 14-0. But that 1981 team was fun to watch!!

My first game was in 75 vs the Steelers at Shea. It was 20-0 Steelers at the half. My Dad went for dogs and when he got back Namath had just thrown a TD. He had tremendous zip on the ball!

I remember this game so well the Jets got a TD to win in the last minute. I was happy ! Too bad Michael’s didn’t stay on for a few more years. This was one team that could have won the Super Bowl with proper coaching. The others were Parcells teams and Ryan’s teams.

The Mets wanted them out after 15 or so years and Rutherford gave them a better deal so they could get the most bang for the buck from that stadium with 2 hosting teams. But the Jets never looked right there. Shea was truly "home".

Don Strock was a great passer, threw the ball better than just about any other Qb of that time, just could not stay healthy. His playoff loss to the chargers was one of the greatest games I ever watched. Along with Craig Morton the two best passers with matching bad knees. Todd had the sad task of trying to replace Joe Namath who was traded to the Rams because of his bad knees. If you get the chance to watch Joes last game as a Ram. Could still throw a beautiful deep ball but it breaks your heart to see him try to avoid the rush and see him wobble and fall down. All these great Qbs from that same era before they changed the rules to protect them from all the late hits and excessive roughing that went on. The same for Staubach with all the concussions he suffered, watched him get hit and just lay there on the ground totally unconscious and twitching. Then there was Lawrence Taylor breaking Joe Theismans leg on a Monday Night Game, you actually could see the bone. The quarter backs today all have it so much better, bur part of what made these games so much more fun to watch was how much more physical the play was. Guys like Dick Butkis literally playing on one leg and Jack Lambert with no teeth left! Those were the days!

The Jets should've won the AFC East in 1981, but they were swept by the Seahawks, who only managed a 6-10 record themselves. Those teams played home-and-home in 1981 because both finished 5th in 1980 (and Seattle did so again in 1981). The AFC East had 3 playoff teams in 1981, but none made it to the championship game (Cincinnati over San Diego).

At the end of the game, listen to that crowd!! Shea Stadium was a horrible football stadium, but the place had character. Gusty winds & airplane noise. Real grass, dirt & mud. Loud and crazy fans. Real, tough, hard and dirty football. Shea was their only true home, unlike the current boring, sterile environment at MetLife Stadium, which they share with the Giants. How I wish they had a stadium of their own in Queens, where they truly belong.
