I give my kid three gems she can spend to reroll all her dice at any point. It definitely improved the game.

Im probably the board gamer this game would work for. The art style reminds me of the Redwall series which is enough for me to go through the entire game and enjoy it regardless of wether the game was fun or not, and the randomising dungeons and story would have me hooked

Gosh I miss Paul & Quinns reviewing together, such a great dynamic. Not to say that what you do now isnt great, but I think im starting to get nostalgic. Ahh they were simpler times....

This game is for me and my twelve year old, who’s now thirteen. We’re slowly working our way through the three campaigns. He enjoys the stories, the dynamics of the different characters and the familiarity in everything. Also, he has a lot of patience. Doesn’t mean it’s good for other kids. My second son, only two years younger hates it. Absolutely hates it.
@Puhmaus777 жыл бұрын
But...It's the perfect game to bring the kids to dungeon crawlers and to boardgames at all. My son loves it. The mechanics are easy for him when an adult is with him. The fights are boring for adults but for the little ones....it is perfect
@OneMoreCaptain7 жыл бұрын
I am glad it worked for you. We had the very opposite experience: the long and repetitive fights and the lack of meaningful choices during the adventure, already boring for adults, showed to be dreadful for kids! Every time a kid tried to have a little fun exploring instead of rolling to fight as quickly as possible, the game punished us and we had to start again the scenario. IMO this is the worst thing for such a game.

Between M&M and Descent, I’d choose Descent every time. HOWEVER Descent is too complicated for my kids (9 and younger) and they love this game. So why would you play this, people ask? My answer to that is, that it is a nice dungeon crawl, that my kids can enjoy and I don’t hate every second I have to spend playing it (unlike with some other games they make me play).

Agreed that the starting over from the beginning is a bear but there is something satisfying about after three restarts having things go my way and knocking out several of the areas in one play through. Played with my ten year old. Rules seem intimidating at first but actually are quite simple. House rule. Subsequent restarts are from where we ended the night before.

I think you may have missed that this game is aimed at families.... with children. Which makes all its cuteness, straightforwardness and randomness perfectly on target.

Great Review. Have to say, we did enjoy combat. It was fun to combine our abilities and our position on the board. Besides, it's about the story really. We took a year to play the first 'Book' and are now on the expansion. Some rules are tricky but otherwise, LOVE This game. Thank you for your review.

It seems like the "point" is a kid-friendly dungeon crawl. Does it deliver on that?
@legisnuntius4 жыл бұрын
It's easier to play than Dungeons and Dragons and possible to play with young children. The point is that the family plays together against the game. There is no opponent who is bashing your child's mouse character for them to get upset at. So, if you want to play DnD with your kids some day, this is a good way of getting them into the genre in a straightforward and simpler way. Everything is visualized in miniatures and it almost resembles playing action figures with rules. It can give you difficult odds, so you will have to practice and teach what it means to have fun even if you don't win every time. The review finds the combat to be mundane and without tactics. This is not exactly the case. The custom rules for the encounters make for little puzzles that with a little prompting, you can have your children think about how to do the combat to put yourself in a better position. There may be a baddie in the back who will try to get you at a distance, or a sewer river that could sweep you away if you aren't careful while you try to fight cockroaches. They are perfect for children who have emerging strategy skills. It is best to let a child be the leader and suggest where mum and dad should go. The natural progression from this game is the RPG Mouse Guard, which plays like a Mice and Mystics version of DnD. It's out of print with used copies available on ebay occasionally for about the same price as when originally released (I just checked and there are a few copies for about $60). They will probably print another one in the future.

Which dungeon crawler do you recommend for a family? There are several out there aimed at families but I don’t want one that you have just described - too long for kids too boring for parents. Ideas?
@MrPicklerwoof5 жыл бұрын
I'm not against houseruling per se - for example house rules transformed Advanced Heroquest into my favourite dungeon-crawler of all time - but with so many well-balanced, polished modern games these days, it's definitely a flaw.

I thought the reason this review is so late was because M&M was sold out after the kick start and fell into a laboriously long reprint period. It would have gone against their desire to review readily available games if someone lent their copy, as well as receiving review copies from the publisher. But I guess they wanted to give Quinns insomnia.

Worst learning experience for a board game I've had so far. Spent an entire day trying to decode the rulebook, but I really want to be a mouse with a button shield = SUCKER. Basically, going to write my own rules so I can be mice. Feels like the author's first game and that it was never play tested or proof read. Do us all a favor, pay some teenager a hundred bucks to fix the rulebook over a weekend and give it away as a free PDF.
