Wow, this has to be one of the few recordings with him playing an ebonite piece, smooth and rich with Brecker's amazing playing.

I really appreciate this clip. It shows Michael very at home with a new set up, still dazzling us with his technique and musicality. He looks to be thoroughly enjoying himself too! I think he sounds fantastic here!

Gosh he sounds so different on that rubber mouthpiece. Thanks again for the upload, Louis.

Nice to see Pat Metheny out of his usual context. I like to see musicians proving their versatility by playing another style than their home pitch.

Wow...Mike was definitely taking it to some new places I’ve never heard him go before. Not sure if that’s because of the mouthpiece or not but I loved his sound!

I think this was around the time he was getting ready to record the Ballads album, correct? It's like living in an alternate reality...still Mike, but different. Love it 100% either way! Thanks for posting, Louis!

ok, holy #&@@! listening while I work on something else...haven't heard this particular gig before...you can tell Mike is so into the "newness" of this setup...so fun to hear!!!

So cool! I wonder who’s MPC Michael’s playing. It does take him to different places. With his altissimo control, I wonder if it has a baffle like the Guardala mouthpieces he was accustomed to. His overtone things he does put him in different places on the horn, totally interesting!

It's an Otto Link Tone Edge Early Babbit #8*.

This rubber Link sounds like it has a bigger tip, like an 8*, was this detail published anywhere?@@RavTzizit
@RavTzizit11 ай бұрын
@@leanmchungry4735 Dino Govoni said he lent that Otto Link to Michael for "Nearness of You". He is the original owner of that very mouthpiece. Real/genuine Early Babbitt hard rubber Otto Links usually sound bright and punchy (but s nothing compared to a Guardala MB/MB-II). The issue is most hard rubbervEBs for sale are not real/genuine EBs but modern Links from the 80's (way darker, but not stuffy at all yet).

Thanks for those details about Brecker's rubber Link. Mouthpieces got passed around a lot between players before they became expensive collector's items. Phil Woods told me that Oliver Nelson gave him his NY Meyer 5, Oliver found something else that worked better for him. Molly Duncan from the Average White Band said that he gave Brecker the metal Florida double ring Link that Brecker played in the mid 1970s, I loved the sound he got on that piece:) @@RavTzizit

Wow, this is great ! I wonder if the fact it is black and white means that the person uploading or saving this had to go through some extra effort just to have this at all.

Still love the playing and sound, but do we know why exactly he’s playing hard rubber? Just really curious
@grayfox30574 жыл бұрын
It really is a different sound 🤔 maybe the video’s audio compression plays a role in that
@SteveNeffMusic4 жыл бұрын
He is rumored to have played a hard rubber Otto Link Slant later in 2000 after this on his album "The Nearness of You" so maybe this is him getting used to it and testing it out??
@dylankubilus14224 жыл бұрын
Steve Neff huh that’s interesting! I thought maybe he dropped his mouthpiece before the gig and just had to borrow one for a day

Dylan Kubilus, I wondered the same thing. What a unique timbre from a virtuoso. I’m guessing Michelangelo used different paint brushes from time to time as well!
