Yes isn't it disgusting that they have changed all the words? Apparently Anne Murray did the same thing at a hockey game, and did receive some boos! Who told them to change the words? God Save our Queen was removed, and I feel that today of all days on the day of her death, it is more important than ever!
@nintony2994 Жыл бұрын
@@kath2ndrew My only defense for this is they wanted to update the lyrics. I feel the old lyrics are good but a bit outdated (?) but I find this rendition inoffensive. IMO They also had to update it to be more flashy for the Olympics.
@nintony2994 Жыл бұрын
@@kath2ndrew your point about the queen is also a bit irrelevant as this event was over 13 years ago I see no Canadian ever talk about this lmao
@kath2ndrew Жыл бұрын
The Queen will never be irrelevant as she is was our Queen and we are a British Colony whether you like it or not! We now have a new King, and he will reign over us, as he does all of the rest of the British colonies, which makes us greater than most and the reason why all the 3rd world peoples are struggling to get in here! Fortunately Turdo is toast after what he has put the country through these last 4 years or so, and the Conservatives will have to clean us his mess; AS USUAL!

He should have left it forgotten if this is what he did to it. Not only did he sing the butchered socialist version, but he also gave it a disgusting Jazz twist that no national anthem should have to endure.
@thegreypenguin50972 жыл бұрын
@@trainknut “socialist”? If your definition of socialism is decolonization then im a full on commie. The old song was open settler colonialist and disregards the indigenous and french communities of Canada. Additionally, it doesn’t reflect modern Canada, which is NOT majority British.
@trainknut2 жыл бұрын
@@thegreypenguin5097 I guess I just don't hate the British Empire as much as I'm supposed to. Yea they did some nasty shit but they're also the entire reason Canada as a nation exists today, so, y'know, unless you hate Canada as a whole, our founding principles and everything we've stood for since colonisation, you have to at least give them credit for setting up the framework for which we designed our government around. Fun fact, had it not been for Britain outlawing slavery in 1833 the Atlantic slave trade never would have ended... As for the French, well, they were just as colonial as the Anglos, so they can get fucked when it comes to "representation" - Just cuz they lost the war doesn't mean they weren't just as guilty of all the same shit the British were, they're lucky they even got to keep Quebec. The Maple Leaf Forever is an ode to Canada, it mentions our symbol(the maple leaf) our head of state(the queen), it teaches about our history(the battle of Queenston heights, and the early colonisation of eastern Canada) and it even references the obscure eastern and western bookends of our nation(Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island to the west, and Cape Race Newfoundland to the east) Sure, it doesn't make much note of indigenous history, nor does it really touch on any French or non-anglo history, but at least it actually comes from Canadian history and culture... modern renditions(and O Canada which replaced it as the anthem) are little more than word salads of pretty phrases that mean next to nothing.

As an addition to my statement below, I would like to say that I do agree with the other comments inasmuch that, outside of this particular context (a doubly ironic take on 'The Maple Leaf Forever' - doubly ironic because it simultaneously defuses/diffuses the solemnity of the song while, though swing, rebooting it to a new, popular level of nobility) the lyrics of this version, geared for an international audience, are somewhat generalist (beauty of landscape, national pride) and might serve well as the final verse of the song (there ARE several verses, after all). The revised versions I mentioned take great care to preserve historical continuity while aiming to be more inclusive with Canada's ever evolving profile. Here in maple land we are very blessed: in terms of nationalism we are relative latecomers, and much of our sense of self is infused with multiplicity, diversity, inclusiveness (when we are at our best), eclecticism and conviviality: as Canadians we possess - to quote Ernest Hemingway - "all their easy social graces." Despite separatisms and alienations and political bickering, we generally eschew 'Balkanization', and though number cars we may be, we aim to keep it together. Celebrate our adaptability: THIS is the model the world should envy as it spirals into jingoism, tribalism, and ethnic ghettoization. This IS the land of hope for all who toil/the true north strong and free. P.S. the preference for the 'also-ran' as the official anthem is not unique: it seems a common thing: 'America the Beautiful' and 'Land of Hope and Glory' have long been in the longings of many to be the anthems of Usonia and Great Britain.

I am in no way opposed to immigration, for all of my ancestors were immigrants at some point; however, they did not attempt to alter Canada as you have proposed. In fact, on my loyalist side, both branches were not British at all, but German and Swiss instead, and they were grateful that a country was willing to give them freedom from religious persecution instead of sore that it did not resemble their birthplace

The comments below, though valid to a point, demonstrate a striking traditionalism if not conservatism. Let it be known that since its writing, 'The Maple Leaf Forever' has undergone several revisions because, as it has the freedom of NOT being Canada's national anthem, it can, like the peoples of Canada, adapt and evolve over time impromptu. Revision does not mean erasure: all versions are readily available in archives and online. What makes the song so rich, such an emblem, such a treasure is to hear that in its many lyrical forms (which themselves are enriched by their comparison with others) it retains its grace and grandeur. To doggedly retain the original version to be sung without question is akin to doggedly arguing for the return of the Red Ensign. Is not that flag enriched, is it not more deeply mythologized by its contrast with the current flag? Is it not given a more rightful place in history and identity because one is asked to narrate why it is no longer officially flown, which thus brings it, breathing, to the fore? Rest assured, we are NOT so culturally insecure as we claim; indeed, our very lack of the constant overproduced rehearsal of our narrative through movies and TV series (Britain, USA) speaks to a certain quiet strength. Being Canadian is hard (you have to do the work to know who you are without accepting unquestioned symbology) and easy (let it flow, let it adapt, let it open its spirit to contain all), but our central brilliance lies in our adaptability. You don't need to agree, just consider carefully. Now is not the time for hostility, only a Tower of Peace.
