My parents personally knew Marat Balagula, his then wife Alexandra (Shura), and his two beautiful daughters, Malvina and Oksana, back in Brighton Beach and he was very nice to us as we all had roots going back to Odessa, Ukraine. Luckily, my dad didn't get involved in Marat's business dealings as he too would've been spending time in federal prison for organized crime, racketeering, and tax evasion, or worse shot to death. Yes it was very tempting, but my dad had two young children under his care and the idea of making quick money but then rotting in federal prison was a major discouraging factor. FYI...Marat wasn't an ethnic "Russian" per se but a Russian speaking Ukrainian Jew (Ashkenazi) like the majority of the population who immigrated to the USA and settled in Brighton Beach during the mass immigration waves from the USSR during the 1970s and 1980s. I grew up around the so called "Russian Bratva" of Brighton Beach as a child, played with the children of these mafiosos, and truly didn't know what they were involved in because our elders shielded us very well from their business dealings. To us they were just like family members who visited us during holidays and birthdays yet we didn't really know that they were all criminals and killers.
