@@rickywright1264 Then don't ever take any pride in anything you haven't done personally. No pride in defeating the Nazis for example. @@rickywright1264 Vegas's comment is spot on. If you're going to be proud of the good your ancestors did for you, or for our society, you need to take equal ownership of the things our ancestors did that was not good. It's not about accepting blame yourself, but it is about accepting that you have been provided with opportunities and benefits due to the actions of your ancestors - including the negative ones - that those with darker skins have missed out on. So all anyone is asking is for all white people to acknowledge that, and try to work with the black community to rectify the wrongs done to them in the past, that are still having an impact today.

As a boy, I grew up typically the only Chinese boy in a very white town in Western Australia. Perhaps in part because of this, I loved cricket growing up. Maybe I just love the game. Regardless, I have loved cricket ever since, and I will love cricket until the day I die. I remember referencing a cricketer from the 70s as a boy to my 5th grade teacher, who I looked up to immensely. "How do you know who Ian Redpath is? You weren't even born when he was playing!" That is true. But I wanted to prove through my knowledge of cricket that I am Australian too. That I have a place in this society. I remember some kids from my primary school telling me about coming back from an Australia vs West Indies match at the WACA, and telling me how some people in the crowd had been making fun of the West Indian players, including referring to them as "monkeys." My dad would tell me about the great West Indian teams of the 70s and I grew up in the era of great West Indian cricketers including Brian Lara, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Phil Simmons. Although I never got to watch him play, I have enjoyed Michael Holding's thoughtful and personable commentary for many years. It is immensely moving and gratifying to hear he and Ebony Rainford-Brent speak out on racism.
@johnbattersby86394 жыл бұрын
The big race battle for Chinese kids in the US right now is happening in Universities. They are being discriminated against for their often high marks. Because of that Chinese kids (even ones with lower marks) now have to get even higher marks to get into university, purely based on their race....while African American students require FAR less to get into University. Now that's racism. I do agree with you, Michael Holding is an incredible commentator.

From 1963 onward I just saw these superb cricketers like Gary Sobers (still the greatest player I have seen), Wes Hall, Lance Gibbs, Rohan Kanhai, then: Holding, Roberts, Garner, Lloyd, Greenidge, Marshall (best fast bowler?), Ambrose, Richards, Walsh, and so on. There is the more recent players--not so all-conquering but great people who also happen to love the game and deserve respect. The point is that all these people were great players and outstanding people at the same time. I love Ebony on the radio especially with 'Daggers'.
