I'm glad you are watching this because it is a legendary performance. The first time anyone had seen the moonwalk and Michael brought it to the world, for the first time, in this performance. Watching it on Tv, we had no idea what it was or what is was called. We all just thought it was amazing.

Glad you enjoyed it, MJ was always at his best when he performed alone.

This was part of the TV special "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever", which aired in 1983 to honor of the 25th anniversary of Motown Records (founded by Berry Gordy). The Jackson 5 had just performed, and MJ's brothers left the stage so he could do his new song, "Billie Jean". My parents and I watched in amazement. It was the first time that he did The Moonwalk onstage. The entire show was awesome, but MJ was the highlight.

This performance catapulted MJ into the stratosphere! What’s crazy though is he went backstage and cried after the performance because it wasn’t perfect in his eyes. When he did the spin after the moonwalk, he wanted to stay on his toes longer but didn’t. He didn’t feel good about it until the next day when dancer, Fred Astaire, called him and praised what he did. Even though this performance is iconic since it’s the first time we saw him moonwalk, he got even better at it as the years progressed. You’ll have to watch concert performances to see him really go off on that moonwalk.

Thank you for sharing this story. It reminded me of why I loved growing up in the 80's. Cause stuff like Fred Astaire calling Michael Jackson to talk about dance happened. It sounds like such a fever dream now but I feel like there was much more camaraderie in the entertainment industry than there is now.

Got to remember. Before this he was still a superstar. As big as anyone these days, but once he done that moonwalk he went up into the echelons of the super elite. I mean his fame was off the charts. Look at any of the hysteria videos around MJ from here until his death and he was mobbed by thousands every single time he appeared in public. It was insane. No denying the effect he had on people. And let's not forget the screams you hear in the audience aren't from fans they're from Motown legends and record executives and people in music industry. I mean no one had seen anything like this. Absolute genius and that's why he shook the world for decades.

A very fantastic reaction 🌛🚶🏾‍♂!!! This was the television show that launched Michael Jackson into superstardom along with his 1982 Thriller album. Before his legendary solo performance he performed some older songs with The Jackson 5 (Jermaine, Marlon, Tito, Jackie, Randy) on stage. His dance moves, stage presence was second to none. He wore the one glove because he thought it looked cool plus everyone wore two gloves. Michael Jackson made Jheri Curls, Highwater Pants, Shiny Jackets-Shirts-Socks-Gloves and Penny Loafers very popular after this live performance. If you notice he missed his dance move (toe stand) right after he did the moon walk. He wasn't able to hold it as long as he wanted to- as per MJ in an interview. "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" was a 1983 television special, produced by Suzanne de Passe for Motown Records, to commemorate Motown's 25th year (Motown was founded in January 1959). The program was taped before a live audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California on March 25, 1983, and broadcast on NBC on May 16. Among its highlights were Michael Jackson's performance of "Billie Jean" (which popularized the moonwalk), Smokey Robinson's long-awaited reunion with The Miracles, a Temptations / Four Tops "battle of the bands", Marvin Gaye's inspired speech about black music history and his memorable performance of "What's Going On", a Jackson 5 reunion, and an abbreviated reunion of Diana Ross & The Supremes, who performed their final #1 hit song: "Someday We'll Be Together", from 1969. The show was co-written by Suzanne de Passe with Ruth Adkins Robinson who would go on to write shows with Suzanne de Passe for the next 25 years, including the follow-up Motown record label tributes: "Motown 40". While Motown 25 was billed as "Yesterday, Today, Forever", artists from the golden era of Motown, such as The Marvelettes, The Vandellas, The Contours, Kim Weston, Brenda Holloway, Marv Johnson, Jimmy Ruffin, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Rare Earth, The Isley Brothers, and The Velvelettes were not included in the special, while newer artists such as DeBarge, High Inergy and José Feliciano (who paid homage to Berry Gordy singing "Lonely Teardrops") were. Singers Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson appeared onstage at the end with the other artists, but they did not perform. Non-Motown artists, such as Adam Ant (who paid homage to The Supremes singing "Where Did Our Love Go" with Diana Ross) and Linda Ronstadt were featured as well. Linda Ronstadt performed the songs: "Ooh Baby Baby" and "Tracks Of My Tears", with Smokey Robinson. She had hits with both songs and in 1976 her version of The Miracles' song: "Tracks Of My Tears", even went to #12 on the Billboard Country Singles Chart, a first for a Motown song. According to the documentary: Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, James Jamerson, a key component of the Motown Records musical sound, and member of The Funk Brothers who recorded many of the backing tracks to the Motown hits, had to buy a Motown 25 ticket from a scalper and sat at the back of the hall with the general public. In addition, the "Motown Sound," which Motown producer Paul Riser would later credit The Funk Brothers and the musicians at Motown of creating in the documentary: Standing In Thee Shadows Of Motown, was crudely trivialized during a segment in Motown 25 where executives and employees at Motown, and even Berry Gordy himself, gave all kind of answers to what the Motown Sound was-with no answer giving direct credit to the musicians- The Funk Brothers. Additional Motown 25 show appearances were made by Howard Hesseman and Tim Reid (reprising their WKRP in Cincinnati roles as disc jockeys), Dick Clark, John Moschitta Jr, TG Sheppard (who recorded for Motown's 1970s country record label and had two #1 hits on Billboard's country chart), Billy Dee Williams and The Lester Wilson Dancers. Additionally, clips of Rick James and The Mary Jane Girls were featured. The Motown 25 special was the highest-viewed prime time show in the United States for the week (9 PM to 11 PM)... Rating: 22.8 / Viewers: 33.9 million.

I watched this performance when I was a kid and it was crazy. He got even better at the moonwalk check out his other Billie Jean live performances. Michael was actually disappointed of this performance. I used to do this for whole Billie Jean routine and still can do it in my 50's lol. You should check out him and his brothers this same night just before the Billie Jean performance they did a medley just before this performance it was all on Motown 25
