Michael Jackson's Hidden Influence

Just recently discovered how much MJ was influenced by John Travolta, specifically grease and Saturday Night Fever. Amazing how he took these things and just flat out used them!

This video is not claiming that MJ stole anything, or didnt steal anything. It's not claiming he is original or unoriginal. It's simply showcasing (as the title plainly states) an obvious influence of his that is not widely known, or talked about. MJ rarely (if ever) cited John Travolta as a dance influence, but the parallels are undeniable. The video is for entertainment purposes - for fans. Not to bash MJ. Enjoy!

These moves have been circulating for centuries. Michael Jackson’s influence on movement and dance is yet to be matched as whatever inspiration he’s taken in the past wether it be Jackie Wilson, James brown, Bill Bailey, Fred Astaire or gene Kelly or in this case “Grease” he’s taken these elements and created something COMPLETELY unique. There’s jazz, HipHop, contemporary, ballet and then there’s “Michael Jackson style” what we see in this video is only a small fraction of his arsenal of moves and signature poses. He is quite simply the greatest artist of all time.

@@azure8091 Enough with this race baiting. Michael's main influence was Fred Astaire, James Brown and Bob Fosse(billie jean moves), Smooth Criminal's main choreographer was Vincent Paterson. His talent and mostly his work ethic made him above all these people but he only started to take in Street moves in his bad era, well before that only the moonwalk but's just one move. The reason Michael was such a great dancer because he understood the great dancers are great, whatever genre or color they are and he learned from all of them.

You know what's hysterical? In the 70s when I was a kid, I saw both Saturday Night Fever and Grease several times. Then in 83, I became obsessed with learning MJ's moves. I'd stopped by the time Bad came out but I still saw all the videos and loved them. Never crossed my mind that he was influenced by those movies. Great catch!! Respect!!

John Travolta and Michael Jackson used to hang out in studio 54 together. Michael Jackson learned his dance moves from James Brown who he knew personally the Nicholas Brothers the greatest tap dancers ever who he knew personally Sammy Davis Junior an amazing actor singer and tapdancer who he knew personally. Michael was influenced by them he took those moves and did those moves in the nightclubs and in Las Vegas on the radio show when he was a kid with his brothers and sisters we could also do them and the studio 54 where he met John Travolta ,john took those moves and put them in the movie with the help of choreographer. Years later Michael Jackson is a dancer John Travolta is an actor who does cool dance moves.

MJ didn't copy or got inspired from Travolta, the Grease and Saturday night fever dance is disco dance style which was the "in" thing during that time.. It is just that those 2 movies have become famous era defining movies and hence we think it is taken from there...... Michael didn't take from Travolta or those 2 movies michael took from the 'disco' era moves.... Just see the kind of dance that used to be done on shows like 'soul train' of those times and you'll see that Travolta moves came from there..... In fact MJ got heavily inspired from a dancer from soul train show i think, Jeffrey Daniels or something his name is.. Michael supposedly called him to train him personally... If I remember correctly he even choreographed or helped MJ choreograph one of his music videos too.... MJ's the way you make me feel look was inspired by the look of magician David copperfield in one of his Vegas shows.... I think you can find a video of David's on KZbin...

I wouldn’t call this “hidden” influence from Grease/Saturday Night Fever themselves so much as the remnants of disco being the influence, an era which MJ was VERY much already a part of during his prime. He probably greatly admired Patricia Birch and Deney Terrio’s work in general. And just like MJ, Deney was heavily influenced by NY street dancing as well to inspire his moves.

Don't think that Travolta had choreographed those pieces and routines personally, he was a dancer. But anyways, the influence from Grease and Saturday Night Fever is there, but MJ said many times he got influenced by several artists like James Brown, Fred Astaire, Jackie Wilson, among many others. He then combined all of that, gave it his own style who none could've taught him and created something unique. In fact, when you see a performance by MJ you experience something completely different, you don't get the sense that it came from somewhere else, you just think that all you see is 100% MJ's own style.
