Michael Jai White spoke to VladTV about growing up Bridgeport, Connecticut, during the crack epidemic, revealing that there was also a high murder and teen pregnancy rate at the time. He also explained that it was his rough neighborhood and riots at his high school that led him to train in martial arts to keep himself safe. During the conversation, Michael also opened up about his father, who he described as a gangster player type, and revealed that he gave him a gun at 14, which you can hear more about above.

Being Bridgeport born and raised in the same time he was but on a different side of town, I could not be more proud of this man. Everything he said about Bridgeport is true. From 1983 forward and maybe even before then, the violence just kept escalating. The projects became more and more unsafe to live in or even hang around, and then when crack hit, it ramped up to a ridiculous level. To this day its not fully recovered from the drugs, violence and corruption, which is the reason why I left in 1993. I do wonder why I never ran across Michael growing up, as we are the same age and I spent some years living on the East End where he grew up. He is a great action star, can play the hero, anti-hero or villain equally well, and his fights are believable. Major props to Michael, because he made it through, made it out, and made something of his life, which could have gone so wrong in so many ways like it did for some many people, blacks and hispanics in particular.
