Correct. But nevertheless, this tough-guy, macho posturing is still widespread. I see it all over the place, even here in the middle-class suburbs. Wanting to be seen as a tough, dangerous guy is popular with a lot of people, unfortunately. But outside of a very few specific situations, being tough really doesn't lead to anything worthwhile.
