What a great athlete and class act. I saw him run once in the US National Championships in Sacramento. He was about even with most of the field half way through the final turn.. and then he put his foot in the carbeurator and whish, he wa gone. I have never seen a 400 m runner even approach his finishing speed. Goose bumps all around.

There are people commenting on this thread who have absolutely no idea how sport and indeed life evolves. Of course Johnson's record was going to be beaten one day. People saying that Wayde Van Niekerk was better should consider that they ran in different eras. In 1968 Lee Evans broke the world record. In 1988 Butch Reynolds lowered it, before Johnson took it down further in 1999. People disparaging Johnson in favour of Wayde should understand that one day Wayde's record will be broken as well !

@Eggemeyers 8 жыл бұрын
Timmy O'Toole Usain Bolt has run plenty of 400's in his life. He trained hard for the 400 in the early and mid 2000's but it just wasn't his forte (If you consider mid-45's bad...) So regardless, you are simply incorrect in your baseless statement that he would've run a sub 43.18 had he "ever trained the 4". He did train for the 400, he never got close to the record. He stopped so he could focus on the 100 and 200 exclusively. Had he spent more time focusing on the 400, he would've sacrificed some of his top end speed in the 100 and 200.

That's his average speed. He was running much faster than that on the front end of the race. No 400m runner can even split a race. If they do, then their first half was too slow for their capabilities.

Sean Davis If you're trying to say I couldn't try to do the 400m, when I went to track I came 2nd in the 400 my first year and 1st the next year, and then I got to high school and realized it was a waste of time. Michael Johnson's team had to give back its medal because his team tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Those who do not know will always speculate and make a fool of themselves.
