The decision to break up supposedly came up during the production of Accelerate, so Collapse Into Now was consciously crafted as a swan song. If so, during this interview, Michael already knew that the band was about to quit.

@sixgroupsix The end of an era, really: I expect alternative rock now to fall apart (it's been diminishing for many years now anyhow), and it'll be interesting to see where things go from here. I think we've already seen the basic framework through Lady Gaga and Danger Mouse (two very different visions, but very distinct and clear).

R.E.M's music was so vital and life changing to me up until around the time that Bill Berry left the band. God knows I tried to appreciate their later work, but other than a handful of songs, it just never worked for me after that. Love the first 6 albums though and they will always be a very important and well love band for me.
