Collin Mistr (dosdude1 - creator of the High Sierra patcher you used) is working on a product you can solder to your board to permanently bypass the bad GPU on these models. Your machine would run as it should on the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics. I don't know if he is selling them yet, but it could save a pretty nice computer from the digital dump.
@Dan-TechAndMusic
@Dan-TechAndMusic 5 жыл бұрын
The MuxHat is already finished, pretty sure Collin is already selling them. EDIT: He sells them on eBay, but they are currently out of stock. This site has a link to both the eBay store, and a Google Form for getting on the waitlist for MuxHats: computeco.de/MuxHat.html
@Dan-TechAndMusic
@Dan-TechAndMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Update, the MuxHat might not be coming back soon. Collin already developed a new solution that involves flashing his custom developed firmware to the gMux IC to disable its GPU switching capability, so it needs no board modifications. He's gonna develop a special flasher that you can use for solderlessly flashing the chip. Source: facebook.com/groups/lowendmac/permalink/10155931974486689/

I have a 15 MacBook Pro that needs an OS because it didn't have a hard drive. I am not sure how am going to make a fresh install of macOS. I've tried Mountain Lion and that didn't work. It looks like I need Sierra or High Sierra. I don't have another Mac that can support High Sierra. The only Mac that I have that does not support High Sierra is an iBook G4. I will need some people that can help me clean install macOS with Transmac. I only used Windows to format the drive that was expected to be the install USB.

Not sure if it applies to 2011 MBPs, but for my 2010 MBP, poidevin's tool works for me flawlessly. You can see in detail how it works, and download it here: forums.macrumors.com/threads/gpu-kernel-panic-in-mid-2010-whats-the-best-fix.1890097/#post-23312990 No hardware modifications or repairs required. You can reflow the GPU and still get some life of this machine, of course it isn't a permanent fix as it isn't the problem in the solder balls but it works for some time, depending on your luck, that's what I did with mine 4 days ago and it's still working, I've stress tested it with Furmark - no problems so far. Also, there's a software patch to disable the dedicated GPU so you can keep on using it with integrated GPU with hardware acceleration, but there are some drawbacks like displayport not working. If you plan on changing the motherboard look for a 2012 one, if you go with a 2011 it will fail again soon. So I recommend reflowing the chip and see how it goes from there, you may get very lucky and it could work for a very long time still if you don't push it too much and put on a decent application of thermal paste.
@AShifter
@AShifter 5 жыл бұрын
If it does fail, there's a neat trick you can do called a gMux Bypass that will permanently disable the GPU - Just search gMux Bypass on google but basically you run a few wires on the board (specifically LVDS data lines) to "bypass" the gMux chip that switches between the Intel integrated graphics and the dedicated AMD graphics. Dosdude1 made it, the same guy that made the patcher to run macOS Mojave on older Macs. It's actually quite a good mod, without using software patches that will get reset on a PRAM reset. Glad to hear that your laptop is working! :)

I had the same issue, apple just replaced the logic board however, that didn't help because the problem would happen several months later. Finally when the extended warranty by apple was over this happened again, and i was forced to look else where. A person on ebay traded my logic board and gave me a "fixed" logic board that actually had the issue removed, basically they fixed issue on their own logic boards and trade in yours. I had to give $195 since then no problem. Everything works great.

Best Buy has the Kingston 120GB SSD for $20 pretty regularly. Too many early deaths for me, I stick to Sandisk for real-use, but for a quick-and-dirty SSD, price is right. Rooted around ebay, looks like the best price for the board and chip is about $110.

@@Reziac Yeah for RAM they don't really compare to Hynix or Samsung, I've only had Kingston for laptops but its been fine for me in the years I used it. It's probably thermals which they can't handle, they came in early 2000s Macs which had 0 ventilation for the RAM sticks - they likely give out in intensive activities over long/frequent periods of time

Liked the video and it was as expected.. Sorry i had to be true there last haul vid. :c For a little insight.. It seems apple decided loudness over cooling with thoes machines. Sandybridge along with the amd graphics chip on the same cooler is bound to overheat along with such a gradual fan curve. The amd chips were run out of thermal spec and would degrade the die and its connections, be that on-die or substrate connections, significantly faster than if it was engineered with better cooling in mind. Granted i know their limited with the chassis being so small since most consumers are after thinness.. I too accept the flaw in the chip as well as it has its potential of being hot garbage as well as the whole system. Food for thought.

try blowing on the graphics chip with a hairdryer for 3 minutes or so... (cover the other parts around it). I've actually tried this on an internal nvidia graphics card on a Sony Vaio I think it was... and it worked (to my surprise!). I know it's not a permanent fix... but it's fun anyway and for me that computer worked fine for more than half a year until I gave it away... so maybe it's still up and running.

Delete the AMD kexts from /System/Library/Extensions while using the HDD on the 2009 machine and then put it back into the 2011 machine and boot it up. Mac OS will boot without graphics acceleration. There are some fixes including a ship that can be installed to permanently bypass the AM GPU but I've not done that--still thinking it over, and may try changes under S mode. BTW: My screen shows up in bright blue not black in the mode and does that when recovery fails too.
