I just want to take a moment to acknowledge how forward-compatible the G4 Mac Cube was. This was a device that existed in the Pentium II era. (Just after the release of the PIII, actually, but the PII was still in its prime.) It can boot from USB, can drive 1920x1080 on the digital video interface, and supports 1.5GB of RAM. For the time, that was _insane._
@tytotheler92 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Apple was truly ahead of their time.
@resneptacle Жыл бұрын
To be fair, those features weren't exclusive to the Cube or Apple in general. As usual with non-Apple machines, if you wanted to you could've specced out a Windows or Linux/Unix machine with the same or even better features for less than the Cube costed
@nickwallette6201 Жыл бұрын
@@resneptacle That’s not entirely true. There are probably workstation / server boards from that era that could be upgraded to 1.5GB RAM, but the 440BX (arguably the most common PII chipset) topped out at 1GB, and the i815 (common PIII chipset) actually only supported half that. We were _just_ starting to get into the BBS (BIOS Boot Specification) age that supported booting from things other than floppy and hard disks and add-in cards with boot ROMs (I.e., SCSI.) Whether a particular BIOS could or could not boot from the (fairly new) USB 1.1 ports depends on the vendor. But it’s likely not possible on a given board. And, I have a PIII system with an ATI Radeon 8500 with DVI. It works OK in Windows, but gets utterly confused by EDID data from an HD or UHD monitor during boot. I don’t get the BIOS, boot loader, or even Windows boot logo screens at all. First sign of life is when it reaches the desktop, because the full driver is loaded and can explain to the hardware what to do with a supported resolution of 1920x1080. (Edit: My workaround here was to buy an inline EDID emulator that reporter a 1280x1024 monitor instead. Then everything works. It’s a known issue with the video BIOS on that card, unlike the ATI card in the Cube.) The G4 Cube handles all of that with finesse. So, no - as is often the case, it’s more than just an overpriced PC that can run MacOS.

I'd say that was more of Pentium III era than Pentium II era, Pentium III had been out a bit over a year before the Mac Cube and while P2 were still made and sold the last desktop Pentium II was close to 2 years old. 1133MHz Pentium 3 was released the same month as the G4 Cube. Pentium 4 was also released during the time Apple still sold the Cube. Via Apollo Pro133 supported 1.5GB RAM and Pro133A 2.0GB RAM. SiS chipsets also did 1.5GB

@@mityaboy4639 The fact that using the web sucks with retro computers have nothing to do with the OS itself; it is just that modern internet requires you to deal with TLS and boatloads of memory to render Javascript-riddled web pages and those machines simply don't have the horsepower to do those things satisfactorily. It is the same experience for those running something like Antix in their old Atom-based netbooks, like those EeePCs. You just need to adjust your expectations of what computing can be. Having said that, Morph OS has the capability to run its own native apps which indeed there are not a whole lot of it but it also has a built-in JIT emulator for m68k Amiga applications which there are many and that can be a life saver for people invested in that platform, specially considering the messy situation with the "official" AmigaOS.

Lots of definitely AmigaOS flavoured things going on there, so by your confusion I'm guessing you were never an Amiga owner! You can use the Depth gadget in the top right to bring windows forward instead of double clicking - I wish Windows allowed you to keep active windows behind inactive ones as it's actually pretty useful. The right click for menus is a hangover from when the Amiga had multiple "screens"; grabbing the title bar at the top allowed you to drag the entire screen down to reveal additional ones behind it (some applications required their own screen because they wanted to run in a specific resolution/colour depth) - sort of a proto virtual desktop, I guess. Other things I spotted are the WBStartup folder, the virtual device assigns (S:, LIBS:, T:, ENV:, etc.), a RAM disk, and the separation of "System" and "Work" drives.

So changing the OS on the old machine completely defeats the purpose of using that old machine. I used to have an Amiga 1000. With extended memory. I played with AmigaBasic a lot. It would need beefing up a hell of a lot to be useful today. I paid $1000 for one meg of memory. Still I was keen in those days. It was a huge step up from the Commodore 64.

Current versions of Windows and MacOS make you forget how pretty an operating system can look with fancy icons and such... I'd totally buy MorphOS if it worked on any of my hardware.

IBM’s System P Main Frame is a PowerPC based machine but IBM has taken this architecture so far it’s nothing like any of the machines listed above. In fact IBM now whole owns this architecture. In the beginning is was a consortium of many companies. But it would be an interesting experiment to try to get this OS to run either on the bare iron or in a partition. Ricky from IBM

I love the video one thing I want to note is I personally think the G4 Cube is one of the worst PPC Macs to try this on, I would highly recommend trying it on a G5, I have a G5 that runs web browsing a lot more stable on OSX 10.5, I think you'd have much better luck with a G5 but I really appreciate the video! keep up the weird tech work!

MorphOS is the counterpart to AmigaOS 4.1. Sadly like many things in Amiga land there seems to be a feud between the MOS and AOS teams. MOS focuses on old hardware, while AOS focuses on newer niche PPC hardware. Both are nice IMO. MOS reminds me of a cross between AOS and MacOS.
@flp322 Жыл бұрын
Great video. Would be interesting to see you take a closer look at the applications that come with the OS. Looks like they're all custom-made for MorphOS, so it's almost a parallel universe compared to the Win/Mac/Linux software that we use on the regular.

On AmigaOS, as far as I know, you can compose music (but there is no better tool than Renoise on a PC - like any Amiga tracker but on steroids), work as illustrator / Desktop Publisher (PageStream on Amiga, similar to QuarkXpress & Illustrator in once) and be artistic (ArtEffect4 - Photoshop clone or Photogenics)... play videos and music or play old games... :)

I just installed Sorbet Leopard on to my iBook G4 from 2004 (1.33 MHz, 1.25G RAM, 60G HD). While the install was a bit challenging (because my internal CD Drive wasn’t working), I think it is a much better option for a more modern OS than MorphOS. KZbin (mobile) worked far better than your demo here. And because Sorbet installs on a partition, I can still boot up in Panther and run old apps in Classic 9.2. It won’t be my daily driver, but still useful and surprisingly capable laptop after 20 years! I’m glad I replaced the battery while they were still available. TBD if I can access shared folders from a modern Mac.
@FlyMysticalDJ11 ай бұрын
To be fair your iBook is leaps and bounds more powerful than this cube, that could be why KZbin ran better.

I wonder what their initial market was. Like, who did they make this for?
@CathrineMacNiel Жыл бұрын
its to offer a modern OS to amiga fans. Thats why most of the UI is identical to workbench, heck even the drawers are identical.
@JoshBattin Жыл бұрын
@@CathrineMacNiel it looks great, i'd like to see them implement more modern conventions (like scaling, and being able to push things over the "edge" of the desktop for example) I guess it feels kinda claustrophobic.

The slow speed browsing the web comes down more to decrypting SSL/TLS. This is a problem any operating system running on old hardware will face. If the URL starts with https, it's going to be tedious :(

IBM did do a patent that has now expired which emulates x86 calls to PowerPC on metal. I couldn't find anyone that has built it and sell it however, and I didn't fully understand it from reading but I think it would be better because Amiga emulators are very finicky from my use.

It would make sense that it locks onto the PC that is is originally ran on so people can't sell/distribute the original copy in a way. I think the sims did the same thing when it was still being used on Disks and not the digital stores if I remember right, since me and my mom both somewhat share a copy of the sims 3.

What I don't see about MorphOS is what differentiates it from other OSs enough to justify its cost. It isn't that there's nothing unique in MorphOS, it's just that without a real "killer app" I don't see many people being willing to pay to use it.
@JanuszKrysztofiak4 ай бұрын
Just like AmigaOS 4, at this point it is an OS for hobbyists who want to toy with idea of alternative reality where Amiga had done transition from m68k to PPC (which was never on the table, Amiga had been toasted as a platform even before Commodore went belly up) and how it might look like in the late 1990s. Other than that is has no practical purpose: it runs on seleted PPC Macs and a few exotic PPC boards, it has no SMP support (cannot use more than 1 core), has no decent browser (even if it had - the hardware available is too weak to handle modern pages well), nor serious productivity software. If I were to pay for a retro OS, I would rather buy a licence of ArcaOS (slightly refurbished OS/2 Warp 4).

Kind of surprised that there is a proprietary system for such a niche market, who uses it? Just PPC enthusiasts? Is it used in some industry? Also, about actively maintained PPC OSes, how does it compare to NetBSD?

MorphOS looks like it has some potential to breath life into my older computers where running MacOS doesn't give me a lot of support, like HTTPS in browsers. I may give it a look. There is also Ubuntu MATE which I first heard about for PowerPC.
