Not sure what you mean by 'induction centers' that is quite twisted and weird. Its pretty clear what many main stream artists politics are about, love them or hate them. People are allowed to have strong opinions. We hear them all the time from politicians. Folks in my geriatric demographic, they get all bent out of shape. I think they spend too much time on farting around on facebook . I do not understand. I actually watch younger musicians having a total meltdown, like the recent Grimes issues. Oh I have many older bands I love FreeWilly! And it’s true that older folk can get set in their ways a bit! But usually because they’ve learned a lesson or two in life that brings them to that point. I have no problem with any artist writing exactly what’s on their minds, or saying the same things in an interview! Freedom of speech should always reign! But when he says that it’s a performance, and then steps outside of the performance to rant political ideologies, it almost always segregates the audience. A segregated PAYING audience is never a good thing, with many feeling ostracized, and not ‘good enough’ to grace his presence even with money in hand! People are paying to hear his music, not his ‘UNSOLICITED’ rant! I say unsolicited because he’s playing in front of a paying audience, and they will decide when he starts to color outside the lines! But as always freewilly, ya made me think! Thanx!❤❤❤

I totally agree. I remember going to a Jefferson Starship concert back in 1984. They were promoting their political philosophy between songs. Their ramblings were tolerated for a few times. When they started telling us who to vote for, the crowd started to grumble. Instead of leaving it alone when it was clear we weren't there for a lecture, we were chastised for not being as enlightened as they were. That's when the boos started. Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas were shocked that we would boo their point of view. They were smart enough to shut down the politics after it started to get ugly but it killed the vibe for the rest of the show. You could tell that they were just blowing out the remaining songs and quickly ended the show. I don't care whose side you are on politically don't preach to me when I came to hear you perform. Just play your hits ffs. That Bono story.......what a comeback, "well then fucking stop clapping then." 😁 Mere mortals, humans, getting up on their soapbox is always a recipe for disaster, and yet celebrities and artists just keep doing it! Warnings precede his arrival - no house lights (not even ones to see seat numbers) once he's ready to come on stage , all beverage bottles from the concession stand have to have caps removed , and a set number of rows down front cannot have empty seats. For the latter , ushers or other staffers have to fill them until the ticket holder arrives. He also requires an enclosed tunnel between the venue and his RV so that he is not seen. And yes , he preaches at the shows and if he is irked by something , he throws a tantrum and may walk off and the show ends. The entire staff and volunteer ushers are on eggshells. Not good!

When asked why Ryan would loathe him so much, Mellencamp replied, "I think it's because I'm a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I'm moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that's me."

I’m glad you brought this subject up Mike. As you’ve mentioned Roger Waters - I’ve been watching a current version of Sheep lately from Argentina. The musical factor of this - is just wonderful! Joey Warnoker (drums) and Gus Seyfert (bass) are truly incredible to watch and hear, Mike. You’d LUV them too I’m sure! But during the end of the tune (the incredible fanfare, swirling Gilmour guitar part) Roger seems to want to remind us to “resist” many things via his Jumbotron screen. One of them is: resist CAPITALISM. Really, Rog? So…I ask you this: is this then a FREE concert by any stretch of the imagination? Likely, NOT. He’s just another big-mouthed hypocrite. These would-be Rock Stars are no different than politicians today. They come onstage, read from a teleprompter, say what they THINK is important, then turn their back to run offstage without any hearing criticisms from the other side. It’s all a one-way affair for them and fk that, I say!

I was born near his hometown, and have seen him a couple times. Each time worse than the one before. He has become an a-hole, and doesn't give 2 s**ts about his fans unless they are part of the group think. It's sad, I'm still part of a small-town, he has become a jerk.

@williamlangan59025 ай бұрын
I remember John Melancamp (or however you spell it) say when people were complaining about the ticket prices to his show (or should I say “theatre”) “Can’t afford it? Don’t come.” At least then he was being honest and this was in the 1990’s. I knew he had a political agenda back then because he was asked some questions. “I want to see this guy after the show!” J Melancamp “What a tough guy you are!” M Noland Your response had me laughing so hard, Mike! That’s why I’m proud to be a part of the tribe!

I saw the John Mellencamp show, twice. The 30-minute Turner Classic Movie presentation tried the patience of many in the audience. Overall, the shows were great. John was cranky at the first concert. He stopped the song, Jack and Diane, to give the audience a class on song writing and mentioned if anyone was there to get drunk they should just go home. For the second concert there was no cranky stuff, but the TCM bit was still there and the audience was confused by it. The artwork for sale at his concert is even more confusing. My take away: I think John is confused by his own musical legacy. It is very apparent that he wants to known as John Mellencamp, the Artist…but, everyone just wants Johnny Cougar.
@JamieBeets5 ай бұрын
Oh how I hated the movie scenes at the beginning. That was so hard to sit through. The stopping during Jack and Diane was a scripted part on the first leg of the tour. He came off as an old curmudgeon, but it was scripted. The show I saw last week was great. No politics, just good music. He was probably having a good day. 🤣

The melt-down tirades along with outing the "live" lip-synching is getting a lot of coverage - not good press and not a good look for the big name acts. Going to shows is expensive and I certainly do not want to be preached at or watch a singer lip-synch or musicians pretend to play for the price of admission. Freewill for those who do pay to play. Perhaps it's all a symptom of an industry that is failing because it no longer focuses on the artform - just fulfilling blood contracts and money.

If someone is a Mellencamp fan, they should consider the possibility of a politcal rant from him. People need to pay attention to his past behaviors and assess whether they want to buy tickets to a show which might get political. I saw CSNY a few years ago, fully knowing what to expect from them. They got booed for showing dead American soldiers during the Iraq war on video but they didn't preach to or chide the audience. They just continued to play. It turned out to be a good show. That's how mature artists handle it.

Great video Michael. Fans only pay to see these artists, to hear their music and be entertained. And to get away from politics or whatever is going on in the world that day. And if they want to become a political advocate, then they should do a town hall or theater circuit and say that this is not a musical performance. And then, let’s see how nobody shows up and pays to see that.
