Great reaction! Stevie was self taught and could not read or write a note. When he heard music with rhythm and lead, he assumed it was one person, on guitar, one take. So that’s what he practiced. There are so many GREAT performances, but I’ll suggest an instrumental song that Stevie wrote for his then wife, Lenny. My favorite performance of the song, “Lenny” is from a he El Mocambo show. The emotion he puts into that performance is breathtaking. Thank you!❤Donna G

I'm glad you shouted out the rest of the band because yeah they are incredible. It takes a lot of talent and really being in the moment to be able to hold down the fort with somebody like him. He can go so far out there but he's always 100% aware of the beat, it's like he goes on autopilot so he can express as much as he wants and then he can bring it back in but yeah the band just is killer. And he's played with these guys for a long time and in fact I think he and the drummer go way back. I think they're really good friends and help think up song ideas and Arrangements together or something. Michael, if you go back and listen to it again, just like you were saying it's easy to be mesmerized by his performance and forget that this band is doing a lot of heavy work as well? I would encourage you as a guitarist, if you really want an additional aspect of why he was so incredible and so at home on stage with his equipment, even though you want to see every nanosecond of what he is doing with his left hand while he is fretting, take a pass at it and try to focus only on his right hand as much as you can. It's very very busy. I mean if you take your gaze away at all you might miss something. And I know a little about this because when I play live I do constantly adjust my tone control and my volume and I do switch between pickup selections but this guy takes it to this just master level. He'll also reach up and adjust fine-tuning on a string that may be going out slightly to his ear and it's only a fraction of a second. He'll bend over and make an adjustment on an effects pedal and bop right back up within a beat or two. And then you also get to notice what he's doing with not only all those things, but also the whammy bar and basically just his picking and strumming techniques. He's got s very busy right hand which I freaking love.

The name of the band was Stevie ray Vaughn and Double trouble!!! He toured with them as a band since 1981. After playing a Blues gig with Eric Clapton and a bunch of legends well after the show he decided to take a helicopter back to Chicago and as soon as it took of with in 30 seconds because of the fog it hit a large hill crashed and killed him as well as everyone who was on there!!! He was just starting to Crush, just released his 5th or 6 Album and died at 35!!! August 27 1990. You play guitar imagine using 13"s for your high E and 58 or 62 for his lower E. See how your fingers feel after a couple of minutes of bending those strings!!! Check out Austin city limits he did a few out concerts there!! Just look in to him and learn who he was and his history!!! GBY my friend. Dave

During his brief recording career (1983-1990) his band stayed basically the same: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. SRV lead guitar and vocals, Chris Layton drums, Tommy Shannon bass. A couple of years into it Reese Wynans was added on keyboards. They are all now in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

He had amazing tech and style of string contact. He has distortion cracked to 11 so it's there when ever he wants it, but he can strum and pick so smooth and light it sounds like he has the settings set for clean. And he can use that set up at lightning speed. One of the fastest R&R players outside of death, dark, black metal.

I cried the day he died. such a loss, not only was he a virtuoso on the guitar, but was a nice, humble person. His bandmates, double Trouble were on point, as if they were one unit with Stevie. Double Trouble later played in Arc Angels and an excellent, overlooked band "Storyville" who had a killer vocalist (Malford Milligan). ...Thanks for your reaction

This performance was from "Austin City Limits", a long-running music show on PBS (public TV). Stevie made several appearances on the show. I'm not sure what Tommy Shannon (bass) is doing these days, but Chris Layton (drums) was recently touring with Kenny Wayne Shephard. Reese Wynans (keyboards, added to the band later) is playing with Joe Bonamassa now. Living in Austin, had the great fortune to see Stevie live several times.

Talking about equipment unique to Stevie -- his Number One guitar -- the one he plays on this performance of Voodoo Chile -- was a "parts guitar" he picked up at Heart of Texas Music in Austin from his friend Ray Henig. (Interesting side note, Ray had just taken that guitar in trade from Christopher Cross for a Gibson Les Paul because Cross said he wanted something with more power. LOL! Stevie playing his old junker Strat had more power than any guitar/guitarist combo on planet Earth!) When Stevie took the old Fender Strat off the hook, Ray told him "Stevie you had to have picked the biggest junker on the wall." Stevie just turned to him "I dunno, Ray... I just like the way it feels." Boy, did he ever. Also, you may not notice Stevie played with the fat end of the pick. It's just the way he got comfortable with the pick and he never changed.

Best 3 piece band since Cream with Eric Clapton. Way before your time but well worth your time to listen also. SRV was said to use 13 gauge strings most times until later when he eased up on his hands. Most guitarists were using 9's or 10's (except for ZZ tops Billy Gibbons who swore you didn't need to work so hard and used 7's and 8's) 😀 You might want to search out all the great guitar players of the past. You'll be extremely impressed by what's be done by many of them. SRV is known by many musicians to have been one of the best if not the best. You'll get arguments with that. I choose not to compare. It sucks that when he rid of his demons he died in a helicopter crash. One of my favorites by SRV is "Lenny". Very clean bluesy song shows off his other side. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2bWon2Ee6uqp8U&ab_channel=stevierayvaughnVEVO

SRV's version is a fairly close cover of the original recorded by Jimi Hendrix in 1968 on his "Electric Ladyland" album. SRV was probably the only one who could do it justice after Hendrix. Hendrix's version is more raw and in-your-face. Both versions are great.
