Johnny Mandel wrote memorable film scores - and took time out in early 1960s to arrange an album for Frank Sinatra on the singers new Reprise label ~ a bountiful time for Sinatra and Reprise as Sinatra's buddies lined up to pay tribute to the crooner. swinger..Spectacular vocal quartet HiLos did their hectic Clark Burroughs led take on Bloody Mary arranged by Warren Barker featured on their Reprise album of South Pacific. All great stuff and so memorable.. On Johnny Mandel front the movie for .Lee Marvin and Canadian John Vernon Point Blank,~ earlier Susan Hayworths I Want to Live~ a pioneering jazz inflected movie from late 1950s. with profile cameo for baritone saxist Gerry Mulligan The movie I Want to Live by turns hectic sleazy when jazz still seemed so vital. opening doors to burgeoning jazz avant garde of John Coltrane. And an early introduction to my kind of jazz . Not especially prolific but much of Johnny Mandel is music of subdued enduring quality. Pieces such as Shining Sea are typical of the composer at his best. It was from the mid 1960s satire Russians are Coming and the song benefited from excellent vocalising by Irene Kral and Peggy Lee. two 1950s singers of regal vocal quality not encountered today The music for "Russians are Coming" more memorable than the satirical movie. but such are the strange ways of films and their music. In the early 1970s Mandel the West Coast arranger composer had a sizeable hit with Mash theme Suicide is Painless Earlier there was Shadow of your Smile from Elizabeth Taylor 1960s movie Sandpiper . also his movie score for Moving Target starring Paul Newman in the mid 1960s. . Alto saxist Bud Shank who graced some key Legrand albums featured briefly on screen in I Want to Live. Mandel's songs may not be as numerous as Legrand's but A Time for Love is first division. given a very good account by Tony Bennett. Legrand gives it his oft used pizzicato treatment on a mid 1960s aptly sonorous strings and horns album -- among my favourites. Mandel is l alive at ninety.
